Iraq Finally Getting 3G Wireless

The Iraqi government announced Monday that it would finally allow cellular operators to provide third-generation connections.

Third-generation, or 3G, connections dramatically improve the bandwidth of the wireless, making it much easier for mobile devices to do more than just send and receive calls and text messages.

“We have been waiting for it,” Amer Sunna, the CEO of Asiacell, one of the three major mobile providers in Iraq, told Agence France-Presse. “This is exciting news for us.”

The announcement did not clarify how 3G would be licensed or sold, or when the system would be fully implemented.

With 3G, mobile users in Iraqi will be able to do things many in America take for granted, such as download large files and stream videos. Bringing 3G connections to the iPhone allowed users to easily download third-party apps from the iTunes App store, which believe helped launched the modern smartphone era.

Most countries have made 3G the standard, with many already moving on to 4G, but Iraq’s government has not allowed the upgrades to the country’s cellular network despite nearly 90 percent of the population having a mobile phone. China is already testing the first 5G networks.

“It’s been a while. I think frustration is there,” Sunna said. “Today, you see the penetration rate hitting 90 percent, and we’re still on 2G.”

Thanks TrinityX,

I remember Microsoft signed a deal a couple of years ago to provide some smartphone capabilities or something using the phones. I bet technology comes out faster than lighting once the big dance is announced.

Interesting trivia: Your 4g phone isn't really 4g. Unless it's downloading at over 100mb/s, you're using 3g. Your cell rep has been lying to you. Only way to have 4g is to have multiple antennas in your phone ,which most don't, and the infrastructure to support it, which isn't widely available.

Closest you'll get ot getting 4g speeds is if your literalyl standing under the cell tower.

Iraq Authorises 3G Licenses

By John Lee.

The Iraqi government has announced that it will shortly offer licenses to mobile operators to give customers 3G internet service, AFP reports.

The colossal increase in mobile phone ownership in Iraq post 2003 has been one of the notable developments in the country, a nation which still has a highly limited fixed-line network. Mobile internet use is therefore proliferating rapidly.

Asiacell chief executive Amer Sunna welcomed the news, while noting that some frustrations had been expressed by mobile operators in the long wait to move beyond 2G technology.

“We are really eager to know the terms and conditions. Because until now, it’s just an announcement. It’s been a while. I think frustration is there. Today, you see the penetration rate hitting 90 percent, and we’re still on 2G.”

Iraq Business News has previously noted the huge potential of this market. According to BuddeComm, the country has 3.4 million internet users, roughly 10 percent of the population. This will no doubt rise quickly when these licenses are issued.

I love seeing articles like this.  Lets me know Iraq is on the move with improving technology.  I don't see it being long to get what we have been waiting on. ;)

Why have they refused to OK this until now? I don't understand why they would drag their feet over something like this. They may have had a reason, but I sure cian'

t think of what it might be.

Even they recognize it truly is an information highway that will lift their peoples understanding of the world from" ignorance" to "informed". I can see how much of a threat that in itself would be to the likes of Maliki Liki. Nough said.... Edited by jcfrag
