Senate GOP fails in final bid to block military pension cuts in budget bill

A final effort by Senate Republicans to halt cuts to pensions of military retirees failed late Tuesday, after Democrats blocked an amendment to the controversial budget bill.

The two-year budget agreement, which cleared a key test vote earlier in the day, was expected to get a final vote no later than Wednesday.

Ahead of the final vote, Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., tried unsuccessfully to use a parliamentary tactic to force a vote on the amendment, which he wrote to undo the cuts for military retirees.

A provision in the already House-passed bill would cut retirement benefits for military retirees by $6 billion over 10 years.

Sessions wanted to instead eliminate an estimated $4.2 billion in annual spending by reining in an IRS credit that illegal immigrants have claimed.

He and fellow senators argued the bill unfairly sticks veterans and other military retirees with the cost of new spending.

“It’s not correct, and it should not happen,” Sessions said on the floor.

"By blocking my amendment, they voted to cut pensions for wounded warriors," he said afterwards. "Senators in this chamber have many valid ideas for replacing these pension cuts, including my proposal to close the tax welfare loophole for illegal filers, and all deserved a fair and open hearing. But they were denied.”

Sessions’ office claimed the vote Tuesday to block the amendment was a vote to "cut military pensions instead of cutting welfare for illegal immigrants."

Senate Budget Committee Chairman Patty Murray, D-Wash.,who brokered the budget deal with House counterpart Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., argued the GOP effort was really an attempt to kill the entire bill.

The Republican-led House passed the bill last week in an effort to avoid another stalemate leading to a potential government shutdown, like the one in October that polls showed was largely unpopular with voters.

The two-year budget deal would ease for two years some of the harshest cuts to agency budgets required under automatic spending curbs commonly known as sequestration. It would replace $45 billion in scheduled cuts for the 2014 budget year already underway, easing about half of the scheduled cuts.

Did you forget that Paul Ryan the conservative sweetheart is the coauthor of this budget or that it passed the republican majority House?? And that Obama has not signed into law yet??

Another biased point of view.

Please tell me did Obama force these republicans to vote yes??

Alaska

Murkowski ®, Yes.

WISCONSIN

Johnson ®, Yes.

UTAH

Hatch ®, Yes

TENNESSEE

Alexander ®, Yes

OHIO

Portman ®, Yes.

NORTH DAKOTA

Hoeven ®, Yes.

MISSOURI

Blunt ®, Yes

MAINE

Collins ®, Yes

Or did you forget the House??

All of the Republicans who voted against the budget deal are members of the conservative Republican Study Committee, including Chairman Steve Scalise, R-La., except for five GOP members who don’t affiliate themselves with the committee but still gave the deal a thumbs-down. They are Mike Coffman of Colorado, John J. Duncan Jr. of Tennessee, Joe Heck of Nevada, Walter B. Jones of North Carolina and Dana Rohrabacher of California.

Overall, 73 percent of Republicans and 84 percent of Democrats voted for the deal. While you — like us here at 218 — might have thought the RSC members would be far more inclined to vote against the budget deal, two-thirds of the members supported it. That’s not an incredibly significant departure from the overall GOP ranks. However, RSC membership has become an increasingly meaningless distinction, as 172 Republicans out of 232 now consider themselves part of the RSC.

There were no defections among the senior members of House Republican leadership. Even Boehner cast a “yes” vote. It’s rare for the speaker to put his position on the official record, and even Conference Chairwoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers of Washington who gave birth to her third child within the past few weeks, made it back to the Capitol to vote. Majority Leader Eric Cantor of Virginia, Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy of California, Conference Vice-Chairwoman Lynn Jenkins of Kansas and Republican Policy Committee Chairman James Lankford of Oklahoma all voted for the deal.

Cruz: Budget Bill Exemplifies What is Wrong with Washington
December 18, 2013   |   (202) 228-7561

WASHINGTON, DC -- U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, released the following statement regarding today's final vote on the budget deal:

"This budget bill exemplifies what is wrong with Washington. Nothing is getting fixed. No important reforms are being addressed. The people get little in return except more debt, more taxes, and no change to the Obamacare disaster. The Senate majority voted to allow Sen. Reid to ignore all Republican amendments. Over and over, this is the roughshod style of leadership that characterizes this Senate and underscores why Washington badly needs to listen to the people."

I like you way that this is being turned around ..........................

"Senate GOP fails in final bid to block military pension cuts in budget bill"..........like the Republicans really tried to stop the abuse of our vets.

SO they can shut the government down over health care but can not do the same to save veterans?

They didn't vote to shut the government down Gym.  The House said we will fund everything in the government except Ocare, the Dems said NO.   Then the House said we will fund everything in the government but hold off on Ocare for 1 year, the Dems said NO.  Finally the House said we will fund everything including Ocare, but everyone including them had to be on it, again the Dems said NO as per their messiah O.

So yes the government was shut down, but it wasn't the GOP as the media wants you to believe.  It was the fact the libtards as instructed will not negotiate on anything that deals with their catastrophic failure posterchild Ocare.  Basically saying it's good enough for all of us but not for them.  If that's what you want to support then you are unfortunately on the wrong side of the fence.

Cutting military pensions is a terrible idea.........if anybody truly earned a pension, it would be veterans.

Well said these politians need to cut their own retirement and leave the elderly and military alone. We the people need to clean DC out in 2016.

GO RV, then BV

They're calling it a "mistake" and an "oversight" which they'll move to "correct" tomorrow morning and re-instate...

Really?.... They all had an ample crack at it before it went down like it did.

They just love to throw discord out there to rile the masses...  we're sick of their sick games.

Toying with The People's emotions is manipulation of the highest order.

They should ALL be fired next mid-term!

Paul Ryan has now eliminated all doubts.. he is not just a RINO, he was intentionally positioned to be the traitor. he is an establishment shill, and he will soon lose all support from any even moderately intelligent person.

2014 elections are shaping up to be among the most polarizing and emotionally charged elections this country has ever had.

No matter what happens, I am afraid to say, I'm sure there will in fact be blood on the streets.

Even the low information voter understand this is it.

It's all or nothing.

It will take nothing short of a miracle for this country to even survive the next 11 months, there is no way we will survive another socialist backstabbing commie.

Don't all of the Senators and congressmen retire with FULL PAY???????  LIKE....FOREVER?????

That would be a great place to start cutting.

Just in the interest of full information - Senators and congressmen DO NOT retire with full pay, and have not since 1984.  They fall under a modified Federal Employee retirement plan, which actually has age and length of service requirements (which is one of the reasons that they tend to stick around so long.)
