dog53
That brings back a lot of memories slay I used to watch that aircraft land and take off for hours when I was young. Its a navy jet. I spent a lot of time in patuxent river navel base in maryland and would bicycle down to the weapons system test hanger and watch them go through there touch and go maneuvers. Freaking awesome. They retired that jet in 2006. Now they sell them to the Arabs I guess what we have now is much better . Hard to believe after watching them fly.

CaptainWingnut
Ah Memories. On one of my days off, many moons ago I had my 8 year old son in the copilot seat of our Cessna 182 giving him some time building maneuvers in a desert MOA. On the radio: Clover Control asked; "Captain Wingnut, I've got a few guys who want a little practice finding a low and slow. How would your copilot like a little hide-n-seek then a quick formation flight from some of the guys,,, PAUSE... Ahhh, if they can find you?" I nodded to my son who eagerly responded; "Clover, that would be awesome". Clover responded; "A flight of 3 are 60 miles out. When they find you They'll join you starboard then dust off" I explained to my son what was about to happen. Our transponders blinking light lit up solid and we knew we'd already been found. In just a few minutes our TCAS alerted us and we spotted them at 11 o'clock closing fast. "Morning Wingnut, Raider One One Tally Ho, inbound" came over the radio. "Morning Raider One One, Tally Ho", said my son. "Raider One One, we'll pass low off your left, circle and join on your right" "Roger THAT!", My son said with excitement. We were at 14,500 feet so I told my son to put her into a little dive and get the airspeed up to 170+ so they could slow to our speed without falling out if the sky. We watched them pass quickly by us at about a half mile off and 1,000 feet below. "Diving to get a little more speed Raider One One", I said on the radio. "Roger that", came the reply. Almost a soon as we got to 170 they pulled up on our right (My sons side). Raider One One who was nearest us saluted & rocked his wings. My son saluted, rocked our wings and they climbed out on the dusted off. We watched them disappear in less than a minute. "Thanks Raider One One, Thanks Clover", I said. "See ya back at the barn", said Raider One One. To this day my son who is grown with children of his own still talks about the time he got to fly formation with dad!

nstoolman1
After the Tomcat my 2 next favorite planes are the F-4 Phantom (Rhino) and the B-52 Statofortress (Big Ugly Fat Fellow) or BUFF. I would watch the F-14's do touch and goes at Mirimar and the F-4 and B-52 do touch and goes with the tankers at March AFB. I still go to the air museum and look at them. Thanks for everyones service and stories. Edited March 15, 2013 by nstoolman1
