Ukraine Crisis : A-J516 reported EU foreign ministers meeting to assess stance in Ukraine crisis, consider beefed up sanctions against Russia.  NATO says Russia sent 1,000 soldiers into Ukraine.  Pres. Obama said Russia’s support for rebels in eastern Ukraine must incur “more costs and consequences”.  Rules out military action against Russia.  Russia being accused of an outright lie about its role in eastern Ukraine.  Russia describing the fighters there as “Russian volunteers”.  Kremlin requests rebels open corridor to allow Ukrainian troops they have encircled to withdraw.  Rebels say they will comply with request.   Russia assets under pressure as US & EU weigh more sanctions.  IMF approves next $1.4B bailout payment to Ukraine.  Russia says it won’t negotiate Ukraine’s natural gas debt until Kiev pays $1.45B already due.

 

Other News : Littlesam read WHO says Ebola outbreak in West Africa could exceed 20,000 cases.  That’s more than six times as many as right now.  Malaysia Airlines to cut 6,000 staff as part of recovery plan after disasters, 30% of workforce.  Government aims to make airline profitable by 2017.

 

Captl1 nods in agreement as Britain raises terrorism threat level to severe from substantial.  UK officisals says no intelligence to suggest any attack is imminent.  British PM Cameron says this is not some foreign conflict we can hope to ignore.  He added we cannot appease this ideology, we must confront it.  He further says he will introduce new laws to combat terror suspects.  Pledges to seize passports to fight extremist threats. White House says we have been in touch with Britain about terror level.  No plan to change US terror level in response to UK alert.

 

Saint doesn’t feel right when China trotting out some of its newest and best military hardware, includes choppers and tanks.  Holding multinational live-fire military exercise in the country’s north.  UN says about 1 of every 8 Syrians, or 3 million people has fled country due to civil war.  Inside Syria, 6.5 millon people are displaced.  

 

Chess heard Israeli police identify body found recently as missing US student Aharon Sofer.  Sofer disappeared while hiking last week, no suspicion of foul play.  Thousands of passengers feeling the impact of a pilots strike in Germany.  Dispute between Lufthansa and pilots affecting mostly domestic flights.

 

Boosterbglee  is a bit surprised to hear Denny’s opens its first diner in Manhattan today, serving special combo of Dom Perignon alongside its Grand Slam breakfast.  Nannab has beem praying for Joan River.  Her daughter says the 81 year old comedian is “resting comfortably” at a NYC hospital.  She was rushed from a doctor’s office when she went into cardiac arrest.

 

Dow gained another 19 points at trading today.  Stocks see-saw on final trading day of August.  Ukraine, US, data, and European economy in focus.  Gold closed at $1,287, silver at $19.49, copper at $3.13.  Crude oil at $95.96.

Genx4me is smiling as Biocryst Pharma (BCRX) expects to begin study soon to test its antiviral in primates for use against Ebola virus.  The stock went up 2.2%, closed at $13.50.  Barclays to raise up to $275M to fund Detroit’s exit from bankruptcy.  Judge begins key hearing Tuesday on city’s plan of adjustment.   Morgan Stanley raises Avago Technologies (AVGO) price target to $97. Barclays raises target to $90, both rate stock overweight.  Wiljor is doing a happy dance as Splunk (SPLK)’s Q2 adj. results beat forecasts with surprise profit, FY rev outlook above estimates. The stock went up 19%, closed at $53.93.  

 

Fiat (FIATY) gets shareholder ok for Chrysler merger, exit caps won’t be breached.  Morgan Stanley (MS) plans to build and run one of first US compressed natural gas export facilities.  Shell (RDSa) submits revised plan to US government for drilling in Alaskan Arctic.

 

Google testing drone deliveries in Australia, program called “Project Wing”.  Google says it delivered first aid kid, candy bars, dog treats, and water to Australian farmers.  Google exec. Megan Smith is top candidate for US chief technology officer.  Smith is VP of Google X, led early acquisition of Picasa, Keyhole.  FAA is still shy about drones.

 

Gymrat76541 smells money as Tesla (TSLA) and China Unicorm  (CHU) to build charging facilities in 120 Chinese Cities.  China’s Wanda and Tencent to set up $814M e-commerce joint venture with Baidu.  Privately held Wanda will own 70% of the venture, Tencent  and Baidu 15% each. 

 

Apple is working with NXP for pay-by-touch technology in iPhone 6.  Apple iWatch not shipping anytime soon, maybe come out early 2015.  Sprint (S) will offer a Sony (SNY) smartphone for the first time, soon to be unveiled Xperia Z3. GoPro made a run for the week as it closed at $51.80, also Tube Mogul, Inc (TUBE) also gained some momentum this week, closed at $13.89, gained 7.93% today.

 

Viciousdoggie is not surprised to hear influential industry group says it’s unaware of any “significant” cyber attacks on banks, including JPMorgan.  Downplaying concerns about possible breaches.  

 

From Dinar land : US announced that 7 countries have pledged to provide military support to Iraq and Kurdistan region.  Danish parliament unanimously approved to send transport planes and 55 special military personnel to Erbil as a contribution to the international campaign against ISIL.  Denmark also sending its DC-130 military transport loaded with ammunition.  Vietnam1969 reported that Iraqi army forces are advancing toward the besieged city of Amerli where thousands are besieged for over two months. 

 

Kurdish peshmerga aided by Sandfly firing Tbombs launched an attack against ISIL resulted in worker bees going to sleep forever.  ISIL released a horrific video of beheading of a Kurdish peshmerga fighter in front of a mosque in Mosul.  They forced one of the prisoners to tell the Kurdistan region to stop accepting American military assistance.  These videos are meant to instill fear in the heart of their enemies which could backfire and create resentment among all factons including those who initially help them against the predominantly Shiite government. 

 

Deb45 smiles as religious authorities in Karbala has spoken through their spokesperson, saying political blocs should help choosing the most qualified and able person for high government positions including ministers.  Giving away high position based on political affiliation should become something of the past.  Only proven, able and persistent people should be appointed to position that will affect the life of every Iraqi.  The appointment should only be based exclusively on merit.

 

Calkid11 agrees with PM Abadi who urged all political blocs to submit the names of their choice of people that will hold portfolios in the future government.  Abadi added he expects the list handed to him within the next couple days and without delay.  He said he is adamant on forming an inclusive government based on the Iraqi constitution and merit.  The success of the future government is the catalyst to battling terrorism.

 

The governor of Diwaniya province, Amar Habeeb announced that central government has approved a piece of real estate to build an international airport in the region.  The work of the planned airport will start soon as the window to start the project is two years.

 

Gulf Keystone Petroleum said the increase production in Shaikan oilfield may be delayed until next year due to security circumstances and the evacuation of its staff.  The aim of Kurdistan region is to increase oil production to 240,000 bpd. The Shaikan oilfield is now producing 20,000 bpd

 

Humanitarian aid will be needed to help displaced people in Iraq which are estimated to be 1.5 million people.  Turkish Ministry of Energy said that oil exportation from Kurdistan region has reached 8 million barrels through Ceyhan port despite dispute between GOI and KRG.  PM Abadi vowed to resolve the outstanding exportation issue in a fair way that will satisfy all parties.

 

PM Abadi is the man of the hour as the people of Iraq seem to be happy with the steps he is taking in expediting the formation of an inclusive government.

 

From rumor land :  Millionday thinks the budget is now just waiting on the vote when they meet on Sept 2nd.  Adam Montana says once the HCL is in place.. game on!  Pepperoni on pizza says as soon as they decide to go to Article VIII and a new exchange regime Iraq should really take off.  Tlar comes out and says the house cleaning is almost done.  BGG says a true float would wind up at a reality rate so quickly he doesn’t know they would get enough off the street to risk the down side later.  Tman23 thinks the Kurds have submitted their list of ministers, reports say GOI will be introduced on Tuesday to parliament and budget to be voted on.  From the desk of Stryker says we are seeing a major change in Iraq and it is all developing before our eyes.  Steve1thinks budget will be done in a very speedy fashion.  Exogen thinks the next session of parliament will be decisive and final adoption of the budget to the public in 2014.
