MAYO CLINIC ON ASPIRIN

Dr. Virend Somers, is a Cardiologist from the Mayo Clinic, who is lead author of the report in the July 29, 2008 issue of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology

Most heart attacks occur in the day, generally between 6 A.M. and noon, Somers said. Having one during the night, when the heart should be most at rest, means that something unusual happened. Somers and his colleagues have been working for a decade to show that sleep apnea is to blame.

1.If you take an aspirin or a baby aspirin once a day, take it at night. The reason: Aspirin has a 24-hour "half-life"; therefore, if most heart attacks happen in the wee hours of the morning, the Aspirin would be strongest in your system.

2. FYI, Aspirin lasts a really long time in your medicine chest for years, (when it gets old, it smells like vinegar). Please read on. Something that we can do to help ourselves - nice to know. Bayer is making crystal aspirin to dissolve instantly on the tongue. They work much faster than the tablets.

Why keep Aspirin by your bedside? It's about Heart Attacks - There are other symptoms of a heart attack, besides the pain on the left arm. One must also be aware of an intense pain on the chin, as well as nausea and lots of sweating; however, these symptoms may also occur less frequently. Note: There may be NO pain in the chest during a heart attack. The majority of people (about 60%) who had a heart attack during their sleep did not wake up. However, if it occurs, the chest pain may wake you up from your deep sleep.

If that happens, immediately dissolve two aspirins in your mouth and swallow them with a bit of water.

Afterwards: - Call 911. Phone a neighbor or a family member who lives very close by. Say "heart attack!" Say that you have taken 2 Aspirins. Take a seat on a chair or sofa near the front door, and wait for their arrival and ...

DO NOT LIE DOWN!

A Cardiologist has stated that, if each person, after receiving this e-mail, sends it to 10 people, probably one life could be saved!

pattyangel...the recommended dosage is about 160 mg if a person suspects a heart attack. that is of course equivalent to two 81mg safety coated baby aspirins...most cardiologists suggest that dosage and for daily useage 1 to 2 of the 81's...the best medicine of course is moderate exercise, good nutrition and life style change for most of us...don't let anybody tell you that today's food supply will furnish your body with all it needs to stay healthy....our soil is depleted of the nutrients due to over use and inorganic fertilizers causing the plants to be lacking and steroids, artificial hormones and antibiotics are pumped into our meat supply....organic food+1...cheers

delta...thx for the post :twothumbs:

Great post Delta. Speaking as a paramedic, here are some other things to consider:

Time is tissue. The faster you get into the system, the more likely it is that heart tissue can be saved during a heart attack. Denial is NOT a river in Africa. Get into the system as early as possible.

If you take maintenance medications, write down a list with your medications, the strength(s) of the medications and the times you normally take them. Your pharmacist may be able to help you put this list together.

If you have allergies, write those down, too.

Make sure you have those lists available to family members and rescuers, not password protected on your computer. Some places use a "Vial of Life" -type program where these lists are put in a plastic vial and then stored in the door of your refrigerator so rescuers know where to find it.

How prominently are your house numbers displayed? If we can't easily find 123 E. Main Street, it delays the Fire Department's/EMS agency's response. Don't count on the folks at 121 and 125 E. Main to make it easier for us to find the one in between them.

If there is someone in the home who makes the call to 9-1-1 for you, have them turn on the porch light and unlock the door. Yep, I've had to bust down doors. It ain't a good time when you're racing the clock. Also, if there's a car in the driveway, consider having that person turn on the car's emergency flashers. Nothing acts like a beacon to rescuers like seeing emergency flashers in the middle of the night on a car in a driveway.

Learn CPR! Learning it is easier than ever and it really does save lives.

Thanks for letting me go on and on.

Whatever you do ... do not try to force asperin on someone who doesn't want it. They may not becommunivating well but if they are already taking any kind of gloodlthinner for a heart codition, as I do , they may be only able to tell you no asperin. Follow what the patient says, If thry can direct you to the warfarin or other thinner, check when last taken, when due again, conact EMS and ask if you should give any or wait.

Usually anyone already taikng warfarin or aspirin for whatever reason is already covered for a blood thinner untill the EMS doctors arrive.

:)
