Al-Maliki: We Now Know the Price!

Iran's support for Nuri al-Maliki in order to ensure that he remains Prime Minister of Iraq for a second term is no secret. However the secret – which seems to have been uncovered today – is the price of this Iranian support for al-Maliki, after al-Maliki called on Iran to help reconstruct Iraq during his visit to Tehran yesterday. This in itself represents a genuine turnaround in the efforts to ensure the safety of Iraq, the sovereignty of its territory, and freedom from subordination to any external power, whether this is the West, the Arab countries, or, of course, Iran.

Al-Maliki's request is equivalent to giving Tehran the official green light to interfere in Iraq. This is not just political [interference] but also includes [interference] in Iraq's security, economy, media, culture, and elsewhere. This means that Iran, who has Hezbollah in Lebanon to control the country through force of arms, today has an entire nation at its disposal, and that is Iraq.

This is something that can be described as the second stage in the Iranian plans. The first stage was Tehran – following the collapse of the regime – utilizing funds to plant its men and arms throughout Iraq, in order to invest in post-Saddam Iraq. Today, following the withdrawal of US forces from Iraq, Tehran is reaping what it sowed following the collapse of the Saddam regime.

A US source familiar with decision-making circles in Washington informed me that Nuri al-Maliki's request to the Iranians to help rebuild Iraq "is inconsistent with US foreign policy on the Iraqi file, and the limits of Iranian engagement with Iraq." Of course this is not the first blow that Nuri al-Maliki has inflicted on Washington, for this was his announcement of an alliance with Moqtada al-Sadr following Iranian pressure, and this is something that has caused concern amongst the Americans. Here my US source told me "I hope that al-Maliki's call to Iran to rebuild Iraq will be a wake-up call to some in Washington as to what is taking place in Iraq today, and they gain awareness as to the true nature of Nuri al-Maliki himself."

This is with regards to America, as for the Arab situation, critical questions are now being asked, particularly with regards to what Syria is capable of putting forward, especially after Allawi called on Damascus to intervene, although this has yet to achieve anything. In fact, we see Iran going even further in the issue of the formation of the Iraqi government, with [Grand Ayatollah] Khamenei congratulating al-Maliki on his efforts, and calling on him to form a government as soon as possible. Anybody reading what the Supreme Leader of Iran said might think that he was reading a statement issued by Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani [in his position as the most senior Shiite marja in Iraq].

All of this might explain to us why Damascus met with al-Maliki after severing ties with him for a year, and without any pressure being exerted on it such as those that were enforced on the opponents of Damascus in Lebanon whenever they begin their journey towards reconciliation with Syria. Therefore the question that must be asked today is; does Damascus approve [of this situation]? Is this all that Damascus can offer with regards to the Iraqi file? The same applies to the role of the Gulf and at the forefront of this, Saudi Arabia. For if Tehran is causing all of this trouble via its influence in Lebanon, what will the situation be like after it has control of Iraq?

Therefore, even if are were aware of the price of the Iranian support for al-Maliki today, it seems that the Arab countries, and the West, and particularly Washington, are not aware of the extent of the losses that will result from Iranian hegemony in Iraq, whether this is with regards to regional stability, the peace process, or more.

I would hope that BO can be controlled & even the socialists in our sorry state of a government will finally stop forcing Maliki on the Iraqi people and STOP calling for the formation of their gov. to SLOW DOWN. BO has done everything to use the power of the US presidency to work against the US constitution and against the RV.

All we can now hope for is that the Iraqi gov. will finally say NO to BO, & form a gov of their choice, that wants freedom & democracy. And then once this freely chosen gov. in Iraq is formed, there can be a realistic RV dispite our sick government.

Remember to VOTE. OnlyYOU can stop American Socialism.

I think it may be time for some Iraqi style justice on this guy. I also think this is in response to alawi formally declaring support for mahdi. This thing will likely be done this week. Question is whether the Iraqi people have that sense to turn this nutball out?

If Iran does get in on this, my VIP with Adam and investing in Iraq ain't gonna happen. Best price and out!

This goes to show that Obama and Hilliary are clueless about foreign policy.

Hillarious isn't, bit the living telepromter of course knows nothing.

If this is true, this is very bad for our investment. There is no way that the world will revalue a strong currency for Iraq if Iran has controll of the puppet.

Hey Trill, I'm not arguing your point BUT, do you really think that if Malaki gets the job, that he will honor ANY of these sell outs he's been promising these nutbags? He honors nothing and noone, only power. He's not gonna share his toys with anyone. Just my opinion. B)

Its still smoke!!! Maliki is stalling in every way he can until he finds a way to be the pm or to not be executed when Mahdi/Allawi get elected. Its simply stalling this process farther until he gets a deal. Other than that I agree with your post

I hear ya TRILL, and I agree 100%. This is not a good thing for the US or the rest of the world for that matter. This could have a crippling effect on the world as a whole in the long run. I am thinking on one hand this might speed the RV up before Iran can start moving in. Think about it with Iran at the controls, they would dictate who gets oil and at what price, this could destroy countries with just this alone, not to mention having control of the currency. But don't think for one minute that those 50,000 troops left behind in Iraq ( and more on stand by in Kuwait) weren't left there for the just in case senario. I still believe this investment will bear fruit very soon as all the countries that need this as much as we the individual investors cannot go on any longer. Their bills our over due just like mine.

GO RV!!!

A couple of things to ponder while people are hand-wringing about Al-Maliki:

1. While in Iraq I asked my Iraqi co-workers their views on Iranians. Most of them had lost relatives in the Iran-Iraq war. Their loathing of the Iranians was visceral, viral, deep, very deep. They even hate the way Farsi sounds to their ears. I am referring to opinions of Sunni and Shia Iraqi's both.

2. The Sunni's with Allawi's backing have continued to control the Ministry of Defense. Iyad Allawi was the Controller when I was there in 2007, I believe.

3. When the recent elections were going down, I asked my co-workers their opinions of Al-Maliki, Allawi, Chalabi, etc. Their response was a universal loathing of them too. Their view was, " Why should I support them. They were out of the country when we were getting bombed here."

IMHO, I don't think Al-Maliki or Al-Sadr have the backing from the Iraqi people in order to allow their Iranian handlers to have the Pasdaran-Revolutionary Guard or the Basiji to be marching down the streets of Baghdad. The Sunni's and secular Shia running MoD would pull a military coup long before that. And the MoD has bigger teeth than the Ministry of the Interior, to include 13 brigades of Sunni Kurdish Peshmurga. And the police I saw training in Jordan were lightweights, sad-sacks.

I am not sweating these gyrations with the forming of the government. The Iraqis will be Iraqi nationalists long before they become stooges of Ahmadinnerjacket.....

My opinion only.

In my opinion Maliki would be assassinated before he would be allowed to get in bed with Iran.

A educated man, except The Kurds will never stand for this. You see back in June Iran sent it's troops across the border and they set up a make shift base camp 7 miles inside the Iraq border and ended killing a bunch of Kurds. I bet cnn forgot to show this on the news.. But anyway the Iraqi gov was screaming asking why US troops were not protecting there borders.. We nicely pointed out that it's your country now we gave it back and to go take care of business for yourself, well needless to say the squeaky wheel gets the grease and a detachment on US troops were sent to push the Iranians back across the border and secure it. Border games about where the defining line is are common between Iraq and Iran. Do not under-estimate Iran they are very good at mind games and warfare practices the kurds know first hand and so do the iraqies. So in closing this dog won't hunt!!!! One of two things will happen. 1. Maliki just sunk himself OR 2. everyone is about to see just how much stroke he has.... Peace

You are so right!!!!!!

Totally believe this is not smoke at all. Maliki is not the one to be PM. I do not care if the RV takes forever to happen. Putting the correct leader in place for Iraq needs to happen. If this holds up the RV, then this is just fine with me. We do not want Iran involved with any influence.
