Yes Iraq: Baghdad

Under a limited area of its territory, Iraq possesses a substance of great quantity and price, as it holds two-thirds of the world's stock of sulfur with its hands, while the other third is distributed over the entire globe, which is unmatched by any other substance in terms of what Iraq owns.

The global stock of sedimentary sulfur is estimated at 600 million tons, of which Iraq alone owns 360 million tons in Salah al-Din Governorate, which means that Iraq alone owns 60% of the global sedimentary sulfur, while the world shares 40% of the sedimentary sulfur stocks.

The General Manager of the Mishraq Sulfur Company in Salah al-Din and south of Mosul, Abdul Moneim al-Jubouri, says that the Mishraq fields are the largest sedimentary sulfur fields, where the global reserve is estimated at 600 million tons, and is the largest in the world, and its reserves are estimated at nearly 360 million tons.

Iraq extracted about 90,000 tons until 2003 to stop production completely, before contracting in 2011 with the American company Defcoal, to stop the start of work after ISIS took control of Nineveh Governorate in the summer of 2014, and the factories and imported equipment for production are still stored in the ports of Basra; Because of the company's need to rehabilitate the infrastructure and warehouses.

Al-Jubouri shows the possibility of resuming production by about one million tons of pure sulfur within two years, while indicating that the Iraqi national industry will not rise unless the state works to protect the local product, pointing out that his company produces about 80,000 tons of “water purifiers” (alum) annually. The country's needs are sufficient, with international standards, but state departments and ministries deliberately import this material from global markets.

The price of a ton of sedimentary sulfur is estimated between 450 to 650 dollars per ton, and by calculating the adjusted price, the value of Iraq’s stockpile amounts to 180 billion dollars, which is enough for Iraq’s budget for approximately 3 years, or represents Iraq’s oil sales for nearly 30 months.

Yes Iraq: Baghdad

Optimism is increasing in economic circles after the news that Iraq started exporting sulfur because of its economic feasibility and being the first exploitation of minerals after Iraq relied on oil only, while the great importance of this substance lies in the fact that Iraq owns 60% of the world's reserves.

Today, the Ministry of Transport, represented by the General Company for Ports of Iraq, announced the anchoring of a ship intended to transport sulfur through the southern port of Umm Qasr.

The Director General of Ports, Farhan Al-Fartousi, said in a statement today, “We are keen on facilitating the processes of entering sulfur and transferring it to private ships and providing the best port services.” He added that berth (6) in the southern port of Umm Qasr received a ship dedicated to transporting Iraqi sulfur.

The government official added that work is underway to complete its shipment with this substance in coordination and continuous cooperation between the port administration and maritime navigation operations.

Last Sunday, the General Authority of Customs announced that Iraq had exported more than 4,000 tons of sulfur to India.

A statement by the authority stated, "The customs center of Khor Al-Zubair port provided all the effort and facilitated the procedures for the process of exporting 4540 tons of sulfur to India, on board the ship ART."

He continued, "This is the first ship to export this substance."

It is noteworthy that the reserves of Al-Mishraq Fields 1, 2, and 3 in Nineveh Governorate are estimated at 354 million tons out of the total world reserves of 600 million tons of sedimentary sulfur, which means that Iraq owns about 60% of this substance in the whole world.

The price of one ton of sulfur is about $500, while a ton of oil, which represents about 7 barrels, is about $490 per ton, if the price of a barrel is calculated at about $70 as an average.

The Iraqi Economists Network commented on the news of sulfur export with optimism, saying: “We hope that the government agencies will form a working cell between the concerned authorities, including the General Company for Railways and Railways, to transfer and increase the export of this substance; And they found it economic.”

Economy News - Baghdad

The Ministry of Industry and Minerals confirmed, on Tuesday, that Iraq is the world's first in sulfur reserves, while noting that the sedimentary sulfur reserves in the Mishraq fields amount to more than 400 million tons .

The media center of the Ministry of Industry and Minerals stated, in a statement to the Iraqi News Agency, that "the General Company for Sulfur of Al-Mishraq affiliated with the Ministry of Industry and Minerals is the only one specialized in extracting and purifying sulfur through the fields located in Nineveh Governorate," noting that "the sedimentary sulfur reserves in the first Mishraq fields are at the level of the world and amounts to more than 400 million tons .

He explained, "The sulfur industry started since 1971, and the sulfur produced in the General Company for Al-Mishraq Sulfur played a major role in supporting the national economy through what is exported to neighboring countries, as well as supporting the local fertilizer industry," noting that "after 2003 it stopped The production of sulfur in the company as a result of the events in that period, including the bombing and sabotage acts that affected the company’s facilities and led to the complete suspension of work there .

He added, "The company has started preparing a feasibility study for the rehabilitation of the refined sulfur production line, but the costs are exorbitant to implement the rehabilitation process and return production," noting that "the company worked on the early stages of rehabilitating the project through the allocations granted on the investment plan ."

He continued, "In 2010, the company, in accordance with the amounts of the allocations, set import priorities and purchased materials, machinery and equipment, as it was able to purchase specialized sulfur wells excavators, and a specialized sulfur filtration unit, as well as purchasing a steam boiler unit, water pumps and specialized pipes ."

He pointed out, "It was hoped to complete the equipping and rehabilitation of all production lines and the trial operation of the project in 2015, but the entry of terrorist gangs into Nineveh Governorate in 2014 prevented this, as the company was exposed to the theft of most of the materials and equipment and the destruction of the company's infrastructure ."

He stressed, "The company started for the second time in 2017, preparing an economic and technical feasibility study and preparing an integrated investment file for the project to produce refined sulfur in its current reality, but the project stopped ."

She explained that "the Office of the Prime Minister directed in the year 2020 a letter that includes directing the Prime Minister to leave the decision regarding the investment of mineral resources to the next government," noting that "the company is awaiting the appropriate decision regarding it ."

The company submitted, “proposals for the purpose of resuming production and industry of sulfur, including providing the necessary allocations on the investment plan for the purpose of completing the installation and installation of previously purchased equipment, as well as preparing and rehabilitating the industrial areas of the refined sulfur production line, which cost about 179 billion dinars, in addition to obtaining approvals from the central government to present the project.” As an investment opportunity for investors .
