The Secretary-General of the Council of Ministers, Hamid al-Ghazi, said Wednesday that Iraq has reached the decisive stage in several files with Kuwait.

"The discussions between the Iraqi and Kuwaiti ministers on the sidelines of the visit of Kuwait's Emir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah put the final touches to resolving many of the outstanding issues between Baghdad and Kuwait," al-Ghazi said in a press statement.

He explained that "the work of ministers from both sides in the meetings today was based on the agreements reached and discussions in 2018 and 2019."

"The meetings focused on bilateral trade and economic files, the development of border ports as well as energy files," he said.

Speaker of the House Mohammad al-Halbusi said during a meeting with Kuwait's Amir Sabah al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah on Wednesday that all outstanding issues between Iraq and Kuwait should be resolved.

In a press statement received by Al-Ahed News, Al-Halabousi said that the latter "received the Amir of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah and his accompanying delegation."

"The meeting discussed the prospects of cooperation between Iraq and Kuwait, and files of common interest, in the interest of the two brotherly peoples," the statement said. "The need to maintain communication and resolve all outstanding issues."

Kuwait plans to sign an oil agreement with Iraq after completing a study concerning the potential production of oilfields shared by the two countries, Kuwait's oil minister Khaled al-Fadhel told state-run Kuwaiti News Agency KUNA on Wednesday.


Fadhel made the comment in Baghdad, on the sidelines of a state visit by Kuwait's ruling emir, Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah, KUNA said.


"A joint agreement will be signed with the Iraqi party after the Kuwait Oil Company completes a study about the production of the shared oilfields in northern Kuwait," he said, cited by KUNA.

President Barham Salih stressed that the relations between Iraq and Kuwait have made significant strides due to the wisdom and the desire of the leaderships of the two countries to overcome the obstacles of the past. 


During the official discussion held at the presidential office in Baghdad on Wednesday with Kuwait's Emir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmed, Salih indicated that Iraq has a serious desire to build advanced ties with its neighbors, especially with Kuwait in manner that serves the common interests of the two brotherly peoples. 


The president added that Iraq is looking to the nature of the ongoing crisis in the region in a broad outlook, and seeks to achieve a comprehensive regional agreement, based on the dialogue and good neighborly among the countries. 


For his part, Kuwait's Emir indicated his country's desire to support and enable Iraq to overcome the repercussions of the terrorist acts and rebuild the country, expressing that the visit is a chance to discuss the ways of enhancing and developing the cooperation between the two countries and resolve the outstanding files between them.


The two sides discussed recent political developments in the region and the attempts of mitigating them to achieve stability in the region as well as Kuwait's contributing in the Iraq reconstruction processes and the relations between the both countries and the ways of upgrading these relations to meet the two fraternal peoples' aspirations were also tackled.

KUWAIT: Kuwait is in the process of signing a joint oil agreement with Iraq once a study on the development of the northern fields is completed, the minister said .

On Wednesday, Khaled al-Fadil announced the close of the Kuwait Oil Ministry's signing of a joint agreement with the Iraqi side after completion of the Kuwait Oil Company to study the oil production in the fields common to northern Kuwait, according to Kuwait News Agency (KUNA ).

Al-Fadil's remarks came after talks with the Iraqi side on the sidelines of the visit of the Emir of Kuwait to Baghdad .

Al-Fadhel said that he held bilateral discussions with the Iraqi side on special and bilateral issues in the oil and electricity sectors .

He added that there are serious steps to link Iraq to the Gulf electricity network, pointing out the importance of holding intensive meetings between the Kuwaiti and Iraqi sides in light of the distinguished relations between the two countries.
