She learned to speak German and apparently liked the country well enough to stay and become a citizen. I dont know if taxes had anything to do with it.

Amazing how the 1st amendment gets so much support(from me as well)yet the amendment that protects all the rest is the one that so many want to eliminate. History, Hitler, Stalin and Mao banned guns and weapons in their respective countries, the result was dictatorships where millions were murdered by the govt of there respective countries because they had no way to defend themselves. Recently someone(and i cant remember if it was michael moore, piers morgan or some other ill informed dumbas)said that the united states citizens dont need guns, why would we? We have never been invaded. No kidding. We have never been invaded because we have guns. The Japanese did not invade after Pearl because they thought every american was armed. Ronald Reagan said "The greatest invitation to war, is a sign of weakness". Why does everyone want to take our guns? To make us safe? Is Chicago safe? Guns are illegal. 500 murders does not sound safe. If you choose to not have a gun, that is your choice and i will stand up for your choice. I choose a different path. I choose to be able to defend myself and my family. I hope I never have to. We have a constitution that has worked for us for many years. Plenty of laws in place. We need to up the penalties for gun violence. Handguns are illegal in Chicago, yet over 600 children have been shot in Chicago schools so far this year. Guns are illegal on school grounds in most states. Only the law abiding follow the law. Gun free zone=target rich environment to a gun toting criminal. More laws is not the answer. Stand up to the criminals. Have police on school property, hire professional armed security, allow teachers to be armed and trained to carry firearms, I guarantee the problem will go away. Would you go into a police station and try and try to kill a bunch of people? No, you go to a target that is "soft". Guns will never be totally eliminated. You are correct about the taxes. NY did it to cigarettes. Almost $5 a pack tax on them. However they can stop the sale of the powder and the primers. They will get BATFE involved some how(license to reload, good luck getting one) and watch reloading disappear as well. For every legitimate and constitutional reason we have for keeping our guns, the gun grabbers have more nonsensical reasons to get rid of them. Make no mistake about it, as tragic as the CT shooting was and is, some of these anti gun knuckleheads are giddy about their good fortune in being able to point and say see! we need to ban guns. This tragedy is being politicized by the anti gun crowd. They did not even have the decency to wait a few days before running their mouths about gun control.

An assault rifle by definition has several things that it must be capable of to make it an assault rifle. "Selective fire is one of those things. Selective fire includes, single shot per one trigger pull, 3 round burst per trigger pull, or fully automatic discharge which means if you hold the trigger down it will fire until the clip is empty. There are several other requirements for a rifle to be an "assault " rifle, however selective fire is the most significant. Assault rifles are not available for legal purchase by the general public(it is possible to get a machine gun license but good luck with that). Assault "type or style" rifles are legal to purchase but they are not actual assault rifles. So the gun grabbers are looking to ban automatic weapons and assault rifles, neither of which are available for legal purchase by the general public. The media has it wrong, the gun grabbers have it wrong. Why is there no mention of the 600 plus children shot in Chicago this year? Chicago where handguns are illegal, Illinois where gun laws are the most stringent in the United States? Because the media ignores facts and criminals ignore the law. The governor of New York want to pass a law requiring a forced buy back of "assault rifles" and then confiscation for those that do not comply. New York already outlaws any gun that has a capacity of more than 10 rounds. So my question is, what guns is he looking to "buy back or confiscate? (did i mention another defining characteristic of an assault rifle is a detachable magazine. A whole bunch of hunting rifles have a detachable magazine. Hmm. Looks like the gun grab is on in NY. There are other characteristics that also define an assault rifle, but selective fire and detachable magazine are definitely a requirement.

Goldiegirl, I agree with you wholeheartedly, except I believe the problems started earlier than the 80's. the problems started with the unions. The unions are why car companies(and why manufacturing left this country) cant make a buck off of the sale of a car. 90 bucks an hr to put together vehicles that are not worth a darn, on top of benefits and retirement packages that can not be sustained. I believe the unions served a purpose and initially had good intentions, however the greed of the leaders ruined everything. What good is it to make 30 bucks an hour as a laborer, if no one can afford to hire you? The problems of this country run much deeper, but I am too exhausted to go on
