ronin12
This evening around 18:30, while going to work (night shift), something very interesting happened here on our Base. From the direction of the Iraqi Air-Force base (here at the VBC), I heard a crowd of people screaming, yelling, celebrating something. And it must have been a large crowd, because their camp is almost a half a mile down the road from ours... and I was wandering - did Maliki or Shabibi announce something tonight (I believe somebody here on the forum mentioned yesterday that he was supposed to give a speach tonight)???Does anybody else (here in Iraq) know anything about the similar celebration(s)?R12

The Central Bank of Iraq (CBI) is currently entrusted with drawing up a study on the whole issue and would give its decision soon,” said the Iraqi premier. The Iraqi dinar’s exchange rate is suffering from low value against foreign currencies as a result of decades of wars and economic embargo that brought the local currency’s exchange rate to the rock bottom from three dinars per dollar in the late 1970s and 1980s to 3,000 dinars per dollar after the 1990 invasion of Kuwait, followed by a 13-year crippling sanctions regime. The exchange rate fell even more after 2003 to reach 1170 dinars per dollar due to the CBI’s policy of daily auction, in effect for more than five years now.The policy was lambasted by several economists on the grounds that these auctions do not give the real value of the country’s local currency.AmR (S)/SRThanks for the post & link. This was in another Post earlier. However, there is an incorrect statement in the article - it actually went from a low of 3000 IQD/USD to an increased value of 1170 IQD.USD currently, not continued to decrease as the article states. A point worth noting - I repeat again in this post what I said in the other post - if the IQD high was 3 IQD/USD as Malaki stated (not the $3.20 Saddam established), then it was only US$.33/IQD. If they RI'd the IQD to its pre-war High Value, our new exchange rate would be US$.33.IQD. I can certainly live with that initially. However, based upon their natural resources, it could eventually go us 10 times that figure to the $3.45/IQD that has been stated. This is all food for thought, since there are errors stated by Maliki - if that's what he meant...!!!???Blessings to You, IQD Family -RON
