A parliamentarian calls for cutting ties with Sweden for allowing the burning of the Holy Quran

{Local: Al-Furat News} A representative of the State of Law, Jawad Al-Ghazali, called today, Sunday, to sever relations with Sweden for allowing the burning of the Holy Qur’an, while he indicated that the Swedish government took a weak position on the Arab and Islamic countries, so it allowed the burning of the Qur’an.

Al-Ghazali said to the Euphrates News Agency that "the attitude towards the Holy Qur'an is criminal and it is unfortunate that it comes from an Iraqi," expressing "his deep regret at the lack of responses from Arab and Islamic countries at the level of crime towards the Qur'an."

He added that "submitting a protest paper and summoning the ambassador is not sufficient, but there is a need to sever diplomatic and economic relations with Sweden from all Arab and Islamic countries," noting that "there are indications that a person submitted a request to the Swedish government to burn the Bible, but it refused."

He continued, "We condemn the burning of any heavenly book, and we affirm that the Swedish government took a weak stance towards the Arab and Islamic countries, and therefore allowed the burning of the Qur'an."

Earlier, the Swedish police announced that they had authorized the organization of a demonstration whose organizer, an Iraqi young man named "Sloan Momica", plans to burn a copy of the Holy Qur'an outside the Stockholm Grand Mosque today, Wednesday, coinciding with the start of Eid al-Adha.

In its decision, the police said, "The nature of the security risks associated with burning the Qur'an does not, under current laws, justify rejecting the request."

Earlier, Iraq held the Sudanese authorities responsible for inflaming the feelings of Muslims by allowing the burning of the Qur’an, warning that this hate-filled act would lead to the quagmire of terrorism and extremism again.

Today, the Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs warned that the incident of burning the Holy Quran in the Swedish capital, Stockholm, has inflamed the feelings of Muslims around the world and constitutes a dangerous provocation for them.

It affirmed Iraq's strong condemnation and denunciation of "the Swedish authorities' allowing an extremist to burn a copy of the Holy Qur'an in a manner that constitutes a grave insult to religious sanctities," as it said in a strongly worded statement, which was followed up by "Elaph."

The Iraqi Foreign Ministry called on the international community to "assume its responsibilities to stop such unacceptable acts, to renounce all forms of hatred and extremism, and to hold the perpetrators accountable."
The Swedish authorities allowed an extremist to burn a copy of the Holy Qur’an in front of the Stockholm Central Mosque on Wednesday, on the first day of Eid al-Adha, when Muslims were performing the Eid prayer, with widespread rejection at the international level.

SWEDISH EMBASSY ATTACKED IN BAGHDAD: The Swedish embassy in Baghdad was attacked and burned by angry mobs on Thursday over a scheduled Koran burning in Sweden.

  • Iraqi security forces reportedly stood by and allowed protesters to breach the embassy and set it on fire.
  • Iraq expelled the Swedish ambassador on Thursday to protest the Koran burning in Stockholm.

Why It MattersThe attack on the Swedish embassy, and the follow-on burning of the facility, while Iraqi security forces watched is an indication that Iraq remains a backwater client state of Iran. Despite two decades of democracy building by the U.S. and its partners, Baghdad’s government still cannot abide by international diplomatic norms.
