Masrour Barzani: The implementation of the oil agreement is a good gateway to the whole of Iraq

The President of the Kurdistan Regional Government, Masrour Barzani, stressed that the implementation of the recently signed oil agreement with the federal government will be "a good gateway for all of Iraq," noting that the Kurdistan Region has fulfilled its obligations and is waiting for Baghdad to fulfill its duties and pledges.

This came in a speech during his visit to the city of Akre, on Monday (May 22, 2023), to announce a number of strategic projects, including the announcement of the establishment of Akre University of Applied Sciences, and the establishment of a university in the Garmian region under the name of Garmian Polytechnic University (Garmian Technical University).

In his speech, Masrour Barzani touched on a number of issues, including those related to the relationship with the federal government, saying that "the Kurdistan Region has made strenuous efforts with the new federal government with the aim of reaching an agreement on oil issues, the budget and all other outstanding issues with Baghdad."

He added: "The region has fulfilled its obligations and more, and we expect that the federal government headed by Mr. Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani will fulfill its obligations, and implement the oil agreement properly, as this matter will not only be in the interest of the Kurdistan Region, but will be a good gateway for all of Iraq."

He explained that "the adoption of the draft federal budget law in the Iraqi parliament would open another door from an economic point of view, especially since the Kurdistan Region faced tremendous economic pressure during this period."

The President of the Kurdistan Regional Government continued: "As you know, we have not exported oil from the Kurdistan Region for about two months, and despite that, we did not allow the cessation of projects in the region," noting that "the Kurdistan Region expects the federal government to implement its obligations towards the rights and financial entitlements of the region, without difference and discrimination."

On April 4, 2023, Baghdad witnessed the signing of the agreement to resume the export of oil to the Kurdistan Region, in the presence of the President of the Kurdistan Regional Government, Masrour Barzani, and the Iraqi Prime Minister, Muhammad Shia Al-Sudani.

The agreement came after the suspension of the export of oil of the Kurdistan Region following the decision of the Arbitration Tribunal of the International Chamber of Commerce on (March 23, 2023) in favor of Iraq, in its lawsuit against Turkey for violating the provisions of the "Iraqi-Turkish Pipeline Agreement" signed in 1973.

Earlier today, the Kurdistan Regional Government called on the federal government and the main parties from which the government emerged to "abide by the agreements and ensure the entitlements and rights of the Kurdistan Region on an equal basis with the rest of Iraq, as stipulated in the constitution."

why do i get this gut punch feeling that this "oil agreement" which is what they have done over and over in the past years, is somehow pushing the real "oil and gas law " to the back burner that both erbil and baghdad stated in articles would be implemented right after the budget is passed ...... cheers dv'ers
