A startling increase in the number of Americans who believe, incorrectly, that President Barack Obama is a Muslim is spurring fresh debate about whether he needs to — or should — do more to convince the public of his Christian faith.

Two surveys released Thursday indicate that religious rumors that have dogged the first African American president since his 2008 presidential campaign are surprisingly widespread, and may have actually gained traction during his presidency. One of the polls, commissioned by Time magazine, contains a jaw-dropping finding: nearly half of Republicans—46 percent— believe Obama is a Muslim.

“We have had a war of attrition over Obama’s religious reputation since the campaign,” said John Avlon, author of “Wingnuts,” a book on the political fringe. “It all comes from the same place: this idea that he’s the other — alien.”

Doubts about his religious views were stoked, Avlon said, when Obama quit Trinity United Church of Christ — a prestigious African American congregation in Chicago — amid the controversy over Rev. Jeremiah Wright’s incendiary remarks about race, but didn’t immediately join another church. When he came to Washington as president, many expected Obama would select a new church or sample many different ones. But in more than 19 months he’s been in office, he has been seen heading to the golf course more than to church.

“When Rev. Wright blew up, and Obama left that church, his failure to find another congregation was seen as evidence that it was all a fraud to begin with — for some folks on the far right,” said Avlon, a former speechwriter to Rudy Giuliani, referring to the controversy over the African-American minister’s remarks about race. “The fact that [Obama] hasn’t found a new congregation that he attends on a regular basis is used to just underscore that.”

“There’s enough misinformation out there that it can cause confusion, and there aren’t photographs of him attending church every Sunday,” noted Lee Miringoff, director of the Marist Poll.

White House spokesman Bill Burton suggested Thursday that the increase in people thinking the president is a Muslim could actually be the product of a vacuum — the public seeing less coverage of Obama practicing his faith.

“For most Americans, they’re not reading a lot in the news about what religion the president is,” Burton told reporters aboard Air Force One as Obama headed to Martha’s Vineyard for vacation. “What they’re focused on is, you know, what you guys are focused on, which is important issues like what’s happening in Iraq and Afghanistan, what’s going on in the economy, what are we doing to create jobs.”

However, Burton said the lack of pictures of Obama praying or singing from a hymnal shouldn’t lead anyone to think he isn’t religious, or doubt what religion he ascribes to.

“The president is obviously a — is Christian. He prays every day. He communicates with his religious adviser every single day. There’s a group of pastors that he takes counsel from on a regular basis. And his faith is very important to him. But it’s not something that is a topic of conversation every single day,” Burton said.

Another White House official, Jen Psaki, sent reporters a statement calling Obama a “committed Christian”—a phrase his campaign rolled out two years ago when his faith became a subject of contention and Internet rumors.

One prominent Democrat said Obama’s low-key approach to faith could be feeding the misperceptions.

“President Obama has, I believe, referred to his religion less frequently than the two prior Democrats to hold that job — Southern Baptists Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton, and certainly less than George W. Bush,” said Paul Begala, a Democratic consultant and former adviser to Clinton. Obama, he said, “is not a man who wears his faith on his sleeve, so maybe that's part of what's going on.”

The new Time poll found 24 percent of Americans believe Obama is a Muslim. Another survey taken for the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life found 18 percent of respondents think Obama is an adherent of the Islamic faith—up from 11 percent early last year.

The Pew survey was taken in July, before the controversy over a mosque and Islamic cultural center near ground zero in New York gained national attention. The Time poll was taken on Monday and Tuesday of this week as the story dominated the news cycle — and just after Obama weighed in publicly on the issue at a White House dinner celebrating the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

So what..If many Americans really studied the history of this country, they would see that we are not as squeaky clean as many might think. We are involved in several international situations that does not have anything to do with national security. Adams had access to every data base including drivers license info, international passport info, national crime computor, and everyother data base that would find a persons identity... there was NO records anywhere proving Obama's citizenship or identity as an American. No social security number, no long form certified bith certificate, and all hospitals in Hawaii told their department Obama was not born there. Adams boss told Adams Obama was not born in Hawaii.

It seems easy for a Muslim to quote a peaceful verse from the early parts of the qur’an while following the principle of TAQIYYA neglecting to mention the fact that it has been officially abrogated by later more violent verses.

By the way you also may want to know ... or maybe not... that Georgia is investigating and I believe charging Obama with using more than one social security number and the one he uses most is a Conneticut number which you have to be a Conneticut citizen to apply for... this same number was issues to a man who is dead and would be 119 years old if he were alive. DId you also know his grandmother Madeline Dunham worked as a volunteer for Hawaii circuit probate court with total access to the social security data base of deseased numbers?

Maybe we should be asking ourselves not only is this man a Christian but 'WHO IS THIS MAN" since Tim Adams a former senior election clerk for Hawaii, has come forward who worked for Hawaii when the birth records were in question for Obama. Adams had access to every data base including drivers license info, international passport info, national crime computor, and everyother data base that would find a persons identity... there was NO records anywhere proving Obama's citizenship or identity as an American. No social security number, no long form certified bith certificate, and all hospitals in Hawaii told their department Obama was not born there. Adams boss told Adams Obama was not born in Hawaii.

Why would a honest Christian man spend millions of dollars out of his own pocket to hide and seal every record of his existence from kindegarden all the way through his life. WHAT is he hiding? It has already been confirmed Obama went to Ocidental college on a foreign scholarship as a foreign citizen.

I'm in total agreement with you!!!! These people that call them selves Christians?..... I am not that religions, But I believe in all!!! Religions. If you can remember our history you will find out what others religions have done in the name of their faith. I am not condoning these things that you accuse others of doing. their is an old saying, those are without sin cast the first stone. Religion is about faith and belief in betterment of all god children...not destruction of another's faith. the people you speak of are people that made up things as they see fit to their situation....... I would pray for the muslim to have a revelation of God's love for him, that God loves him so much he gave His only begotten son, Jesus to die on the cross for his sins and bear his curses.

And Christ rose from the grave Alive to make intercession for us at the right hand of Father God that we would be born again. What he really needs to do is show his patriotism, respect, and love for this great Republic of the United States! Who he worships is between he and God. I would like to see his Birth Certificate though. It is hard for me to believe anyone born in this country could run it to the ground as he and his cronies have done. I do believe because of his earlier education in muslim schools, he is very sympathetic toward Islam. I just wish he would uphold our constitution and honor the heroes before him that have saccrificed so much to make America the greatest nation in the world. JMO

Please don't pull the race card........why does it always comes down to him being black... well he has just as much white in his genes as black, that has NOTHING to do with whether or not he is a christian or a muslim, except it is being used to control people.... people are afraid the blacks will riot if Obama is exposed and brought down because it will come down to " they only did this because he is black" then others won't listen to the truth or check it out for themselves because they say it is all lies because he is black... racism sure is blinding.

This president sat for how many years? MANY years in a church that preached racism and to hate America, Ameicans and whites. That's wonderful idealism but reality tells us that perception is everything - perception among his country's people and perception of the world's eyes upon him. How he is perceived governs our politics.... it's less about what god he prays to (is everyone here really that overly concerned about his salvation? Probably not) and more about his perceived religious ambiguity affects his relations with the rest of the planet. He seems to ride the fence so that he is everything to everyone. But in doing that, I think he is alienating much of his own country.

Here's the full context of Obama's "My Muslim Faith" quote. If you're honest and open minded you will clearly see that he was talking about attempts to label him as a muslim when in fact he is a Christian. He was acknowledging that John McCain never attempted to label him as a muslim.

Obama has never stated that he is a muslim. He has stated that he has lived in a muslim nation and that he has muslims in his family but that he chose the Christian faith as a young man. He can't help how he was raised any more than anybody else. I was raised as a Baptist but I left the Baptist Church many years ago when I was old enough to decide for myself what I believed.

Yes, Obama has quoted from the Koran. So did Bush. Yes Obama has tried to reach out to the muslim world. So did Bush, only Obama has much more knowledge and experience to draw from when he does so (not to mention the fact that he is more articulate). There are plenty of things to criticize Obama about without resorting to this nonsense.
