This one would affect all the low income and middle class even though biden said he wouldn’t add taxes to families making under 400k. Biden May Impose Vehicle Miles Traveled Tax in Violation of Tax Pledge Posted by John Kartch on Friday, March 26th, 2021, 1:08 PM PERMALINK Follow @JohnKartch Norquist: "Biden must fire Buttigieg, repudiate his statement or admit that he was elected on a lie." President Biden pledged to every American making less than $400,000 that he would not raise 'a single penny' of any of their taxes, or impose any 'new' taxes on them. But today his Transportation Secretary said the administration is eyeing a vehicle miles traveled tax. This tax would violate Biden's pledge. CNBC asked him what he thought of the tax. Buttigieg said: "I think that shows a lot of promise. If we believe in that so-called user pays principle, the idea that part of how we pay for roads is you pay based on how much you drive, the gas tax used to be the obvious way to do it, it's not anymore, so a so-called vehicle miles traveled tax or mileage tax, whatever you want to call it, could be a way to do it." If Biden intends to keep his pledge, he must immediately and loudly disavow this tax. "Biden won the 2020 election promising that he would never raise taxes on anyone earning less than $400,000 a year and would never impose a new tax," said Grover Norquist, president of Americans for Tax Reform. "Now his Secretary of Transportation announced he wants to both tax Americans earning less than $400,000 and do so with a new tax. Biden must fire Buttigieg, repudiate his statement or admit that he was elected on a lie." Biden and Vice President Harris made the pledge on at least 56 different occasions. The pledge also forbids the imposition of any 'new' taxes on Americans making less than $400,000. So the vehicle miles traveled tax would violate the Biden-Harris pledge both ways. https://www.atr.org/biden-may-impose-vehicle-miles-traveled-tax-violation-tax-pledge?amp Drive a lot? You may pay higher taxes under one possible Biden plan BY CHRIS MORRIS March 26, 2021 12:18 PM EDT Heavy drivers could see their tax bills go up as the White House prepares to roll out its extensive infrastructure proposals. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg told CNBC Friday that the government is considering many options, including a mileage tax, which would assess charges based on how far people travel, rather than how much gas they use. The move comes as the push to move to electric cars grows stronger. Gas taxes have become less effective as mileage increases in new models and hybrid vehicles travel much further on a single tank. A mileage tax “shows a lot of promise if we believe in that so-called user-pays principle: The idea that part of how we pay for roads is you pay based on how much you drive,” said Buttigieg. The plan, if enacted, could have significant implications on the income of independent contractors in the transportation industry, especially truck drivers, Uber and Lyft gig workers and delivery workers. Biden’s infrastructure plan is expected to propose up to $3 trillion in new spending. White House officials have considered breaking the proposal into two smaller bills to increase the chances of getting it through Congress. Dubbed the “Build Back Better” agenda, the plan features improvements ranging from building and improving roads, bridges, railways, ports, and the electrical grid to investments in infrastructure, clean energy, manufacturing, and growth-industries like super-fast 5G mobile technology. Biden also hopes to provide free community college, universal pre-kindergarten education, national paid leave, and reduced child care costs. Senate Republicans and business groups that have supported the plan both say they have no interest in increasing taxes to pay for the improvements. https://fortune.com/2021/03/26/biden-mileage-tax-increase-proposal-buttigieg-transportation-strategy/ have to buy an old car so maybe the speedo malfunction occasionally!

caddieman
Well I have an electric car so right now I am paying zero to ride on the roads. As I understand it if they go to a mileage tax. The tax on gas will go away. In SC gas is taxed at .24 a gallon. With all the electric cars coming they will have to go with this sometime. With everyone paying their fare share overall your actual taxes could actually go down. I don’t mind paying my fare share.

You might be right but I think they are talking about repealing the gas tax and going to the mileage tax. I could be wrong
yota691
State Highways have up keep on paving and new roads....Taxes don't go away...Purchasing electric car, it usually takes 10 years to break even...if they last that long...Speed sensor are a must for most vehicles to run correctly..which calculates mileage.. 1
