  11. Thank you - my gene pool is the reason, even my ancestors that were born in the 1800's lived well up into their 80's and 90's. The ones that left this world early, in most cases, were from "lead poisoning" if you get my meaning. I'm certainly going to make every effort not to be one of them. Not a single case of cancer in the last 3 generations from my direct ancestors bloodline so the good Lord saw fit to give us a pass on the big "C". Of course, I have a sister that is pushing her luck at 66 because she still smokes (like an idiot).
  12. According to Snopes.com A widely circulated August 2011 version of the article "I'm Tired" presented the piece as the work of comedian Bill Cosby. It's not (and his own site features a denial of it) - the opinion piece was written by Robert A. Hall, a former Massachusetts state senator and U.S. Marine Corps veteran who is also the author of the 2005 book The Good Bits (The Marines, the Massachusetts Senate and Managing Associations). Robert Hall blogs as The Old Jarhead at tartanmarine.blogspot.com, and the piece quoted here, titled "I'm Tired," was his blog entry for 19 February 2009. Since I'm in the age group I tend to agree with the statements.

  16. The short answer is No. My ancestors, with the exception of one GrandFather, were almost as poor as the slaves. That one GrandFather owned a nice sized plantation in MS (he was a Revolutionary War hero and received a land grant) and I am sure had a sizeable number of slaves but we have been unable to find any records that would give names. His plantation was large enough to have its own cotton gin but, alas, the Civil War wiped out his fortune and most of his family was left homeless as well as the slaves that had depended on him for their welfare. My other ancestor that was very supportive of educating and freeing the slaves was the Reverend Daniel Tucker of "Ole Dan Tucker" fame. You can look him up on the internet, he was highly thought of by the slaves.
  17. I will add that I am a genealogist and checked the census records and there is indeed a P H Anderson and he had a large number of slaves. Unless there are other historical documents that confirm what Jourdan states in the letter, it is up to each reader as to whether they believe his statements or not. However, the circumstances were not uncommon. Many slave owners treated their slaves worse than their farm animals. There were kind hearted owners that treated their slaves with dignity as much as local society allowed. There were also many "whites" that worked diligently to improve the lives of slaves. I am a descendant of one myself. I also have ancestors that owned slaves. Hopefully our society has moved beyond treating any human being as a subspecies and it is IMO wrong to condemn todays society for wrongs committed 150 years ago.
  18. You said you were reading a few posts from "GuruDoc". Where were you reading these posts? We do not have a member by that name but we have several members with "doc" in their name. Doc31 posted a topic 18 May 2010. At the bottom of his post, he has the following: "a.k.a. Doc31, Whatsupdoc31 (depending on what blog or forum you might be on)" Read more:
  19. Just to clear this up - "GuruDoc" is not a member on DV that we know of unless he has another username. Stumpy: You are talking about everyone's favorite "Doc31" and he is NOT, I repeat NOT "GuruDoc". spicolly: whoever "GuruDoc" is or whatever site he posts his opinions on, please do not post links to other sites on DV - it is against forum rules.
  20. CRABBY OLD MAN When an old man died in the geriatric ward of a nursing home in North Platte , Nebraska , it was believed that he had nothing left of any value Later, when the nurses were going through his meager possessions, They found this poem . Its quality and content so impressed the staff that copies were made and distributed to every nurse in the hospital One nurse took her copy to Missouri . The old man's sole bequest to posterity has since appeared in the Christmas edition of the News Magazine of the St. Louis Association for Mental Health.. A slide presentation has also been made based on his simple, but eloquent, poem. And this little old man, with nothing left to give to the world, is now the author of this 'anonymous' poem winging across the Internet. Crabby Old Man What do you see nurses? . . What do you see? What are you thinking . . . . . when you're looking at me? A crabby old man, . ... .. not very wise, Uncertain of habit .. . .. . . . . . with faraway eyes? Who dribbles his food . . .. . . . . and makes no reply . When you say in a loud voice .. . . . .. 'I do wish you'd try!' Who seems not to notice . ... . the things that you do . And forever is losing . . . . .. . . . . . A sock or shoe? Who, resisting or not . . . . . . .. . . lets you do as you will, With bathing and feeding The long day to fill? Is that what you're thinking? Is that what you see? Then open your eyes, nurse . . . . . you're not looking at me . I'll tell you who I am . As I sit here so still, As I do at your bidding, . . . . . . as I eat at your will. I'm a small child of Ten ... . . . . . with a father and mother, Brothers and sisters . . . ... . . . . . who love one another. A young boy of Sixteen . . with wings on his feet Dreaming that soon now . . . .. .. . . a lover he'll meet.. A groom soon at Twenty . my heart gives a leap. Remembering, the vows . . . . .. . that I promised to keep. At Twenty-Five, now . . . . . . . . I have young of my own. Who need me to guide . . . . And a secure happy home. A man of Thirty . . . . .. . . . .. My young now grown fast, Bound to each other . . . . . . . With ties that should last. At Forty, my young sons .. . have grown and are gone, But my woman's beside me . . . . . . . to see I don't mourn. At Fifty, once more, babies play 'round my knee, Again, we know children . . . . . . . My loved one and me. Dark days are upon me . . my wife is now dead. I look at the future ... . .. . . . . . . shudder with dread.. For my young are all rearing . . . . . .. young of their own. And I think of the years . . .. and the love that I've known. I'm now an old man . . . . . .. .. . . and nature is cruel. Tis jest to make old age . . . . look like a fool. The body, it crumbles .. . . . . . . grace and vigor, depart.. There is now a stone . . . .. . . . where I once had a heart. But inside this old carcass . . a young guy still dwells, And now and again . . . .. . . . my battered heart swells. I remember the joys . . . . . . . . .. I remember the pain. And I'm loving and living . . . . . .. . . . . life over again. I think of the years, all too few . . . . . gone too fast. And accept the stark fact . . . . . .. that nothing can last. So open your eyes, people . . . . . . . . open and see. Not a crabby old man. Look closer . . . see ME!! Remember this poem when you next meet an older person who you might brush aside without looking at the young soul within . . . . we will all, one day, be there, too! PLEASE SHARE THIS POEM The best and most beautiful things of this world can't be seen or touched. They must be felt by the heart.
