The Secretary expressed appreciation for the two leaders’ progress in resolving outstanding Baghdad-Erbil issues according to the Iraqi constitution’s framework for dialogue. In his conversations with each leader, the Secretary emphasized the importance of forming a moderate new Iraqi government, pursuant to the constitutional timeline, that is responsive to the expectations of the Iraqi people. The Secretary commended recent successful joint operations by Iraqi forces and Kurdish Peshmerga against ISIS. Formation ERBIL — Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani and US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo discussed in a phone call on Tuesday the latest political developments in Iraq and Kurdistan Region. According to a statement by Barzani's office, the pair also exchanged views on the success of the Iraqi and Peshmerga forces against the Islamic State (IS) militants in the area. They further talked about the formation of the future Iraqi government, the statement added. Concerning the recent protests in southern and central Iraq, the two officials reiterated their support for the demonstrators' demands, stressing that they have to be provided with a better quality of life. If you read between the lines I think Pompeo is saying to both Abadi and Barzani you both need to get your differences settled and pronto. The Kurdish Change Movement said Thursday that US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's talks with provincial government chief Nigervan Barzani and Prime Minister Haider Abadi were very frank and an early announcement to support Abbadi for a second term. "The two conversations held yesterday by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo with the provincial government chief Nigervan Barzani and Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi are a clear statement of the American position supporting Abadi's second term," Tafka Ahmed said in a statement. Ahmed added that "Pompeo's call with Barzani was an American request for the alliance of the two main Kurdish parties with the Abadi bloc in order to accelerate the formation of the next government."
