Electricity for the Euphrates News: We are ready for the summer, and this is what we are missing

{Local: Al Furat News} The Ministry of Electricity announced its readiness for the current summer season.

The ministry's spokesman, Ahmed Al-Abadi, told {Euphrates News}: "Our preparations for the summer season are complete, and we have achieved increases in the volume of production and the entry of transmission lines between the governorates to achieve reliability and stability for the national network, and our efforts were great in the distribution sector."

He pointed out that "strategic transmission lines have entered service, and there are dozens of other lines that will enter service before June 1".

And he indicated that "our equipment is almost complete for all of Iraq's governorates, and certainly with the rise in temperatures, the issue of the system may not be the same, but it will not be affected significantly."

Al-Abadi pointed out that "all we need is to be assured of paying and securing the entitlements of Iranian gas so that the Iranian side does not reduce or disrupt the supply of gas."

It is noteworthy that, during the summer of each year, Iraq faces major crises in the provision of electricity, and has caused a wave of demonstrations and popular anger in a number of provinces.

Iraq currently produces about 23 thousand megawatts of electric power, while the actual need exceeds 30 thousand, which leads to frequent outages.

In recent years, the country has been witnessing unprecedented heat waves, with temperatures exceeding 50 degrees Celsius, doubling the demand for electricity.

The former Minister of Electricity, Louay Al-Khatib, confirmed on Thursday that government support for electricity costs the state 14 billion dollars annually.

Al-Khatib wrote in his tweet, "The electricity is present, with a peak production of 21,000 m/w compared to 2003 (3,000 m/w), but it is insufficient due to the lack of rationalization and the increase in abuses and slums."

Al-Khatib added, in response to one of the comments regarding what was spent on the electricity sector, that "the $100 billion, half of which is an investment that contributed to expanding the network, and half of it is operational costs, but not met by the consumer due to 90% government support, at a cost of $14 billion annually."

PM announces new Ministry of Electricity and Alternative Energy

ScreenHunter-8336.png

By John Lee.

The Iraqi Prime Minister has announced that the Ministry of Electricity is to be renamed the "Ministry of Electricity and Alternative Energy".

At a press conference in Baghdad, Mustafa al-Kadhimi (pictured) said it is unreasonable to build gas power stations when there is not enough gas available, so the new ministry will actively seek alternative power sources.

In the past, he said, power stations were built, "in an absurd manner, without planning and without knowledge."

He also referred to the country's electrical interconnection projects with the Gulf states, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Jordan and Egypt, which will provide power until Iraq reaches self-sufficiency.

Addressing the annual shortage of electricity during the very hot summer season, he said that last year's production of 21,000 MW will not be achieved this year, due to the reduction in gas supply from Iran.

Shafaq News/ The Iraqi Ministry of Electricity announced on Sunday that the capital, Baghdad, has been forged with 16 hours of power.

The file of electric power is one of the most prominent service problems that Iraqis suffer from, despite successive governments spending more than 40 billion dollars on the sector after 2003, at a time when the hours of supplying electricity during the summer are declining.

In this regard, the ministry said in a statement, that it is mobilizing its staff to raise its production capacity and increase the hours of providing citizens with electrical energy, and it takes all its urgent measures to address any emergency defect that affects the joints of the national system during peak times due to the sharp rise in temperatures.

She added that she refutes what is being circulated regarding the poor supply of electrical power to the capital, Baghdad, on Saturday, as the supply - according to the ministry's statement - reached approximately (16) hours in most of its areas, taking into account the presence of some emergency faults that were maintained immediately and with direct follow-up from the Before the headquarters of the Ministry and the General Administration of Electricity Distribution in Baghdad.

The electricity crisis is increasing, with Iran entering the crisis line, as it worked in earlier times to reduce the quantities that are being exported from the gas supplied to Iraq.

Iran justified this step by the presence of debts owed by Iraq estimated at 1.6 billion dollars, before the Iraqi electricity recently announced that those debts had been liquidated.

In January of this year, Iraq and Saudi Arabia signed a memorandum of understanding for the electrical connection between the two countries, in an effort by Baghdad to reduce the chronic energy shortage in the country.

Actually, we have to start working with this company to build the stations.”

 Baghdad: morning

In weather that reached a temperature of 50 degrees Celsius, the scenario of the collapse of the electricity network was repeated in July, despite the preparations announced by the government during the past months to solve the electricity problem. This scenario occurred during the past years, as last July witnessed a similar collapse of the electricity system, and as a consequence Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi directed the dismissal of the Director General of the General Company for Electricity Transmission / Middle Euphrates as an agency, and the punishment of reprimanding him for neglecting to perform his duties and duties. On Wednesday, five southern governorates, Basra, Maysan, Dhi Qar, Wasit and Muthanna, witnessed a complete shutdown of the electric current.
