American strikes of the PMF militia without coordination with Baghdad

BAGHDAD - The US military announced that it had targeted five bases in Iraq and Syria of the Iraqi pro-Iranian Hezbollah, two days after an American was killed in a missile attack on an Iraqi military base in Kirkuk.
Pentagon spokesman Jonathan Hoffman said in a statement that the strikes were carried out "in response to repeated attacks by the Hezbollah (Iraqi) Brigades on Iraqi bases that include American forces," stressing that "they will weaken the capabilities of the Hezbollah brigades to launch future attacks on coalition forces."

The United States raised the level of combat readiness of its forces in Iraq, following a missile attack on a joint base in the city of Kirkuk, which caused the death of a US citizen, according to Iraqi military sources.

Security sources told Al-Arab that the attack targeting the joint military base "K1" between Iraqi and American forces in the oil-rich city of Kirkuk on Friday, coincided with information reported by intelligence agencies on the move of Iraqi groups run by the Iranian Revolutionary Guards to bomb military bases in Anbar.

According to "Al-Arab" information, the attack on Kirkuk base motivated the United States to include the head of the Popular Mobilization Committee, Faleh al-Fayyad, with US Treasury sanctions that previously included Iraqi officials and politicians.

Initial indications indicate that the Kirkuk attack was carried out by the Iraqi Hezbollah Brigades, which is the direct military arm of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard in Iraq, and led by Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, chief of staff of the PMF.

Military sources in Baghdad say that all high-intensity missile attacks in bursts and precision in hitting targets, as happened in Kirkuk, fall within the capabilities of the Iraqi Hezbollah Brigades, which the Revolutionary Guard equipped with special armament capabilities, to be the spearhead of its armed influence in Iraq.

The Iraqi government has not yet responded to the US request regarding its information on who targeted the military base in Kirkuk, according to a senior diplomatic source, who told Al-Arab that the communication between Baghdad and Washington is going through its worst periods during this stage.

The source expected that the United States will carry out a series of measures to secure the bases in which its forces are camped on Iraqi territory "unilaterally", including carrying out pre-emptive operations against militias linked to political parties or with representation in parliament.

He pointed out that Washington resents the ability of Iraqi parties linked to pro-Iranian militias to access highly classified military information related to the locations of American forces inside military bases.

He explained that the United States has a clear vision of assistance provided by Iraqi officers to pro-Iranian militia leaders, which facilitated the targeting of two sites that include foreign soldiers this month.

Observers say that the Iraqi government has been focusing its efforts since Friday to demonstrate that the faction that carried out the attack on the military base in Kirkuk does not follow the PMF, but the frequent evidence of the involvement of Hezbollah Brigades, officially registered with the Popular Mobilization Authority, limits Baghdad's ability to maneuver.

It was expected that the American bases would be targeted at any moment by the Iranian militias after their ability to face the protests that the militia leaders believed to be supported by the United States and other parties was limited.

An Iraqi political observer considered that the US sanctions imposed on a number of militia leaders were an added incentive to target American sites. He said in a statement to “Al-Arab”, “However, on the other hand, Faleh Al-Fayyad’s fear that he was on the list of new sanctions did not lead to curbing absurd behavior that might lead to catastrophic consequences for the future of the crowd, especially if the United States considers it a domestic enemy that must be confronted with all The possible roads, and not necessarily the military ones.

The US response to the militia of the Hashd militia inside Iraq will be an added knot to the group of decades that afflict the parties that live in the dilemma of their inability to impose a prime minister who will preserve their interests in the coming stage.

He did not rule out the observer after the new attack killed an al-Qaeda operative, who is said to be a civilian, and that the relationship between the parties and the American embassy in Baghdad has been worsening. This may lead to an escalation of a different kind, which could be reflected in the parties ’ability to manage their crises with the Iraqi presidency, a crisis that the parliament will not be able to develop solutions that are appropriate to what the parties want.

"The solution is not now to dismiss or hold the president accountable after the parties stripped of the possibility that the United States would be neutral in looking at the conflict between the two parties," he said. Therefore, it can be said that the escalation by the parties against the United States is the mistake that will increase their weakness in the confrontation.

Political analyst who advises the Iraqi government, Hisham Al-Hashimi, says that since the start of the October protests until the end of September, it targeted the areas of the spread of interests, care, diplomacy, and American forces in Iraq 9 times, targeting the American embassy in the Green Zone three times, while targeting the Taji camps north of Baghdad and a camp Baghdad airport, Ain al-Assad base in Anbar, the Qayyara base in Mosul, and Balad base in Salah al-Din, the K1 base in Kirkuk, once.

Al-Hashemi added that it was expected that the preoccupation of the Iraqi resistance factions in the face of demonstrations and protests in central and southern Iraq, and preoccupation in confronting terrorist groups in northeast Diyala, southern Samarra, southwest Kirkuk, western Tharthar and at the border with Syria, would be a source of reassurance to the international alliance and American forces. The political and military levels, but the successive reports leaked by the Western media that reflect part of the reality reveal a state of concern that prevails among diplomats of the embassies of the countries of the international coalition and the military and intelligence attaches, and in the decision-making circles in Washington.

Hashemi revealed that "the coalition forces and the American forces held extensive meetings during the past hours, and searches for evidence enabling them to focus on the faction that carried out the operation in preparation for a harsh deterrent operation, carried out without the knowledge of the Iraqi joint command, for fear that some of the officers leaked information", referring to "Iraqi intelligence reports confirm that" the American forces had conducted searches in the vicinity of the K1 camp, and that they may have reached evidence of condemnation for one of the Iraqi Shiite resistance factions, whose name may be announced soon.

He added that officers from the leadership of the Iraqi armed forces in the northern region, "specifically boycotting Kirkuk operations, expressed great fear of a severe air strike by armed factions not systematically associated with the joint command and the leadership of the Popular Mobilization Authority forces."

Trump briefed on Anbar bombing, Washington "threatens more"

12/30/2019 8:41

The American Secretary of Defense and Foreign Minister went to Florida, where President Donald Trump is, to brief him on the latest developments and US air strikes on sites said to be "Iran" in Iraq.

"We have come to inform the president about the events that occurred during the past 72 hours ... We will not leave Iran to undertake actions that endanger American men and women," Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told a news conference alongside Defense Secretary Mark Esper in the Mar Lago resort in Florida. Pompeo added that he would leave room for Minister Esper to talk about the military aspects, but he wanted to clarify US policy regarding Iran.

For his part, Esper said: "The Pentagon targeted five sites in Iraq and Syria in response to the attack by a militia supported by Iran on an Iraqi facility, which would endanger American forces." The blows were successful and the pilots and planes returned to the base safely. I would like to add that during our meeting today with the President, we discussed with him other options available. I would also point out that we will take the additional measures that we deem necessary, and confirm that our behavior was in self-defense and to deter more bad behavior by the militias or from Iran. ”He said.

The United States announced yesterday that American planes launched a march that bombed five sites of the Hezbollah Brigades in Iraq and Syria. The popular crowd announced that the American bombing of the positions of the 45th and 46th brigades in the crowd in Al-Qa’im district, west of Anbar, has so far resulted in the death of 25 fighters and wounded 51, indicating that “the number of martyrs can be increased due to the presence of wounded in critical condition and severe injuries.”

Baghdad today - translation

US President Donald Trump, on Tuesday (December 31, 2019), accused Iran of masterminding the "attack" on the US embassy in Baghdad, stressing: "We hold them fully responsible."

" Iran killed an another site, injuring many, " Trump said in a tweet on the Twitter platform . "We responded very strongly, and we will always do so."

He pointed out that "Iran is now organizing an attack on the American embassy in Iraq, and they will bear full responsibility."

BAGHDAD (AP) — President Donald Trump is blaming Iran for a breach of the U.S. Embassy compound in Baghdad and is calling on Iraq to protect the embassy. Trump tweeted Tuesday that “Iran killed an another site, wounding many.” Trump says, “We strongly responded, and always will. Now Iran is orchestrating an attack on the U.S. Embassy in Iraq. They will be held fully responsible. In addition, we expect Iraq to use its forces to protect the Embassy, and so notified!

Trump tweeted from his estate in Palm Beach, Florida, where he is in the midst of two-week plus vacation. He’s been largely out of sight and the tweet marked his first comment on the weekend U.S. airstrikes in Iraq and Syria.

THIS IS A MAJOR NEWS UPDATE. AP’s earlier story is below.

Dozens of Iraqi Shiite militiamen and their supporters broke into the U.S. Embassy compound in Baghdad on Tuesday, smashing a main door and setting fire to a reception area, prompting tear gas and sounds of gunfire, angered over deadly U.S. airstrikes targeting the Iran-backed militia.

An Associated Press reporter at the scene saw flames rising from inside the compound and at least three U.S. soldiers on the roof of the main embassy building. There was a fire at the reception area near the parking lot of the compound but it was unclear what had caused it. A man on a loudspeaker urged the mob not to enter the compound, saying: “The message was delivered.”

There were no reports of casualties, but the unprecedented breach was one of the worst attacks on the embassy in recent memory. It followed deadly U.S. airstrikes on Sunday that killed 25 fighters of the Iran-backed militia in Iraq, the Kataeb Hezbollah. The U.S. military said the airstrikes were in retaliation for last week’s killing of an another site in a rocket attack on an Iraqi military base that it had blamed on the militia.

The developments represent a major downturn in Iraq-U.S. relations that could further undermine U.S. influence in the region and also weaken Washington’s hand in its maximum pressure campaign against Iran.

Iraq has long struggled to balance its ties with the U.S. and Iran, both allies of the Iraqi government. But the government’s angry reaction to the U.S. airstrikes and its apparent decision not to prevent the protesters from reaching the embassy signaled a sharp deterioration of U.S.-Iraq relations.

Iraqi security forces made no effort to stop the protesters as they marched to the heavily-fortified Green Zone after a funeral held for those killed in the U.S. airstrikes, letting them pass through a security checkpoint leading to the area.

Dozens of protesters pushed into the embassy compound after smashing the gate used by cars to enter the embassy. The protesters, many in militia uniform, stopped in a corridor after about 5 meters (16 feet), and were only about 200 meters away from the main building. Half a dozen U.S. soldiers were seen on the roof of the main building, their guns were pointed at the protesters.

Smoke from the tear gas rose in the area, and at least three of the protesters appeared to have difficulties breathing. It wasn’t immediately known whether the embassy staff had remained inside the main building or were evacuated at some point. There was no immediate comment from the U.S. Embassy.

The protesters hanged a poster on the wall: “America is an aggressor,” and some commanders of militia factions loyal to Iran joined the protesters. Among those was Hadi al-Amiri, the head of the state-sanctioned paramilitary Popular Mobilization Units, the umbrella group for the Iran-backed militias.

Yassine al-Yasseri, Iraq’s interior minister, also appeared outside the embassy at one point and walked around to inspect the scene. He told the AP that the prime minister had warned the U.S. strikes on the Shiite militiamen would have serious consequences.

“This is one of the implications,” al-Yasseri said. “This is a problem and is embarrassing to the government.”

He said more security will be deployed to separate the protesters from the embassy, an indication the Iraqi troops would not move in to break up the crowd by force.

Earlier, the mob shouted “Down, Down USA!” as the crowd tried to push inside the embassy grounds, hurling water and stones over its walls. They raised yellow militia flags and taunted the embassy’s security staff who remained behind the glass windows in the gates’ reception area and also sprayed graffiti on the wall and windows. The graffiti, in red in support of the Kataeb Hezbollah, read: “Closed in the name of the resistance.”

Also, hundreds of angry protesters set up tents outside the embassy. As tempers rose, the mob set fire to three trailers used by security guards along the embassy wall.

No one was immediately reported hurt in the rampage and security staff had withdrawn to inside the embassy earlier, soon after protesters gathered outside.

Seven armored vehicles with about 30 Iraqi soldiers arrived near the embassy hours after the violence erupted, deploying near the embassy walls but not close to the breached area. Four vehicles carrying riot police approached the embassy later but were forced back by the protesters who blocked their path.

There was no immediate comment from the Pentagon and the State Department on the breach of the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad.

The U.S. airstrikes — the largest targeting an Iraqi state-sanctioned militia in recent years — and the subsequent calls by the militia for retaliation, represent a new escalation in the proxy war between the U.S. and Iran playing out in the Middle East.

Tuesday’s attempted embassy storming took place after mourners and supporters held funerals for the militia fighters killed in a Baghdad neighborhood, after which they marched on to the heavily fortified Green Zone and kept walking till they reached the sprawling U.S. Embassy there.

AP journalists then saw the crowd as they tried to scale the walls of the embassy, in what appeared to be an attempt to storm it, shouting “Down, down USA!” and “Death to America” and “Death to Israel.”

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Sunday’s strikes send the message that the U.S. will not tolerate actions by Iran that jeopardize American lives.

The Iranian-backed Iraqi militia had vowed Monday to retaliate for the U.S. military strikes. The attack and vows for revenge raised concerns of new attacks that could threaten American interests in the region.

The U.S. attack also outraged both the militias and the Iraqi government, which said it will reconsider its relationship with the U.S.-led coalition — the first time it has said it will do so since an agreement was struck to keep some U.S. troops in the country. It called the attack a “flagrant violation” of its sovereignty.

In a partly televised meeting Monday, Caretaker Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi told Cabinet members that he had tried to stop the U.S. operation “but there was insistence” from American officials. He declared three days of mourning for those killed in the U.S. strikes, starting Tuesday.

The U.S. military said “precision defensive strikes” were conducted against five sites of Kataeb Hezbollah, or Hezbollah Brigades in Iraq and Syria. The group, which is a separate force from the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, operates under the umbrella of the state-sanctioned militias known collectively as the Popular Mobilization Forces. Many of them are supported by Iran.

'Death to America': Protests outside US embassy in Iraq have Iran written all over them

Washington Examiner

 | December 31, 2019 11:10 AM

The situation in Iraq is disintegrating, and it has Iran’s meddling written all over it.
Iraqi protesters broke into the U.S. embassy in Baghdad today, lit fires inside, and then withdrew, chanting “Death to America!” and vowing to camp outside the compound indefinitely until the United States withdraws its forces from Iraq.

The Iraqi protesters are responding to a U.S. airstrike against an Iranian-backed Shiite militia, the Kataib Hezbollah militia, which killed at least 25 of the group’s members and wounded more than 20 along the Iraq-Syria border.

The U.S. airstrike was a forceful, defensive response to Tehran after the Kataib Hezbollah militia had carried out a missile attack on an Iraqi military base last week, killing an another site and wounding American and Iraqi service members. President Trump made it clear that the U.S. will not sit idly by as Iran attempts to extend its imperialism into the region. That message was clearly necessary given Iran’s growing hostility toward a U.S. presence in Iraq.

But the protests outside the U.S. embassy in Baghdad seem to be another Iranian maneuver to stoke anti-American sentiment in Iraq. The Iraqi government has made it clear that the U.S. military presence in the region is welcome and necessary despite its unpopularity. Former National Security Adviser John Bolton said on Twitter that this display is “a sign of Iranian control over Shia militia groups, not a sign of Iraqi anti-Americanism.”

It’s likely that the protesters outside the U.S. embassy are not typical Iraqis. They are Iranian sympathizers tied to Iran’s militias in the region, although it's possible that they could also be joined by Iraqi nationalists who would like to see the U.S. gone. This makes the situation all the more combustible. Iran is sending a message to the U.S. that it will not give up its foothold in Iraq, and the U.S. has responded in turn, exacerbating tensions that could explode at any moment.

Trump warned Iraq that its forces must protect the U.S. embassy. Hopefully, the Iraqis will dissolve the protests without any bloodshed. But even if this occurs, it is now clear that Iran and the U.S. are rushing toward a head-on collision — a trajectory that must be addressed if our presence in the Middle East is to continue.

But some activists said that the American calm in dealing with the events of the storming of the Washington embassy in Baghdad may pave the way for collective punishment that includes all of their pictures who were leading the storming operations, headed by “Faleh Al-Fayadh, or Mahdi Al-Muhandis, Hadi Al-Amiri and Qais Khazali.”

The State Department announced on Tuesday, December 31, 2019, the American State Department that its Secretary, Mike Pompeo, assured Iraqi officials that Washington will protect and defend its employees in an independent, sovereign Iraq, in a sign of supporting the movement in Iraq against the domination of Iranian militias.

It is worth noting that the government forces came to the site of the accident after the storming operation and the arson of the second gate of the embassy ended.

The popular crowd .. Iraqi bloodied Iranian leadership, decision and belief

%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%AD%D8%B4%D8%AF-%D8%A7%D9

The missile strike that targeted a US-Iraqi military base (Kai One) on Friday (27/12/2019), was an Iranian message that we are everywhere, and that the US military bases under our targets, carried out the bombing operation "Hezbollah Brigades Iraq", which It was ordered by the adviser of Qasim Suleiman Jamal Jaafar known as Abu Mahdi Al-Muhandis, and in response to the bombing, American forces directed painful strikes at the bases of this organization, which is deployed in Iraq and Syria.

The advocates of the popular crowd revolted against the fact that the American bombardment suffered from the Mujahideen against ISIS, but who the crowd was and how it was established, and why the guide of the Islamic Revolution in Iran recommends its preservation and made it an army parallel to the Iraqi army. If we know that the Hezbollah Brigades, Iraq, the League of the People of Truth, an organization or the Badr militia, the al-Nujaba militia, and others constitute the popular crowd, then are these Iraqi militias the decision and the ideology, or are they linked to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, so how can the Iraqis distinguish between an Iraqi popular mobilization and a Revolutionary Guard with Iraqi blood, belief, and an Iranian decision? .

Hezbollah Brigades was established in Iraq after the year 2003, and it was said up to 2007, but its president, Abu Mahdi Al-Muhandis, had been linked to Iran since the end of the seventies, and had become a trust with the Revolutionary Guards and its leaders, and he had carried out several terrorist operations during the Iran-Iraq war, including operations against American foreign sites and his involvement in an attempt The assassination of the Emir of Kuwait within the limits (1983). He has Iranian citizenship and works as a consultant to Qasim Soleimani, commander of the Quds Force, who specializes in foreign organizations and among his duties oversees the export of the revolution and the protection of the systems that run in the passenger Iran.

A person like Abu Mahdi Al-Muhandis, the Savior of the Guardian Jurist, has no connection from afar or close to Iraq, and that his presence in Iraq to protect Iranian interests, and among the most important tools of it is the militia of the popular crowd, otherwise how can the Iranian nationality and position be also responsible first, in terms of reality, For the Iraqi popular crowd ?!

It is known that the crowd arose according to the fatwa of the authority Ali al-Sistani, and when Iraqis became fed up with it, the authority began talking about its lack of relevance to this crowd, but with gestures and not with frank talk, among which was stated in the speeches of its agents in Karbala, the Husaynid threshold and the Abbasid threshold, that the fatwa of “jihad al-kafa’i” is not It means the formation of armed forces outside the official forces, but the militias that mobilize in these entities found in this fatwa a basis or basis for showing the popular crowd, which is really a wing of the Revolutionary Guard

The pretext of ISIS and the war against ISIS are recorded in the media in the name of the aforementioned popular crowd, while the fact of the matter is that the Iraqi army was the one who won the victories, but the Iranian media affiliated to Iran found its goal in the fatwa of the jihadi jihad and the media started to amplify its role, which is what the other terrorist organizations do, where Depends on the targeted media, ISIS has in fact created its media, it relies on it to spread and be affected, and this is what was achieved during the war on ISIS that, had it not been for the popular crowd, ISIS would have entered Baghdad, and this is far from reality, what happened is that the militias have created sites in the western regions and Mosul And she did my job The displacement and destruction came to impose its control as a fait accompli, but the real actor for expelling ISIS is the Iraqi army and the international alliance, but for this army to be said that it was defeated by ISIS, this is not the truth of the whole story, but rather with a measure from the leadership, the army forces were withdrawn from their positions and the area was given to ISIS, This was accompanied by the flight of hundreds of terrorists from Iraqi prisons

The battle is now between foreigners inside Iraq, between the factions of the Iraqi Hashd, who is an Iranian decision-making and belief, and in the forefront of which are the Hezbollah Brigades of Iraq and the American forces, but the Iranian media and the passengers in the Iranian passengers present the Iraqi crowd as a victim of the American bombing, without taking into consideration that The brigades have dealt a blow to the American base near Kirkuk, and that those killed in the American bombing are the mujahideen against ISIS.

Iran wants war in more than one place, but not with the blood of its mock guard, nor with its money, nor on its soil, but with the blood of the Iraqis, their money, and their land, and this is the secret of the guardian’s recommendation to Khamenei to the Iraqi popular crowd, because basically he mustered it, not the crowd of Iraq.

The popular crowd, and the most important militia of the Hezbollah Brigades, Iraq, and the League of the People of Truth, Nujaba and Badr, are considered to be Iranian forces inside Iraq, but by the Iraqis and not by the Iranians. The matter does not stop when preserving Iran's interests, suppressing protests or demonstrations and pursuing Iran’s opponents through various institutions and organizations with different titles. Rather, the decision of war on any country facing export of revolution comes directly from Iran, and this is the danger of this occupation, which was done by Iraqi elements, and that it happened support from Iran in defense of Iraq, so that some, if ignorant or intentional, took Iran as a savior, and without it, Baghdad would have become an ISIS mandate, without thinking that ISIS was the reason for the Iranian occupation of Iraq, as if its mission had been achieved.

The battle is taking place inside Iraq, and it is a confrontation between two occupations, perhaps they agreed to play this role, as many go to it, but it is clear to Iran that it links the fate of its revolutionary presence with the presence of Iraqi governments subject to its policies, and the presence of militias that fight with it against the interests of Iraq, this is The role the popular crowd plays after ISIS, and what the recent mutual bombing between the Hezbollah Brigades in Iraq and the American base is very similar to what happened between the Ottomans and the Safavids, and Iraq is a battleground for it and in it. As for Iran, it lost nothing, neither blood nor money. The blood is Iraqi and the money spent on the crowd is also Iraqi. As for it, it has the decision, the ideology and the leadership.

The U.S. Embassy in Baghdad was stormed by pro-Iranian protesters early Tuesday, less than two days after the U.S. carried out airstrikes on five sites belonging to the Iran-backed Iraqi militia, Kata’ib Hezbollah.

The protesters set fire to the embassy’s perimeter, smashed windows and doors, and marched and chanted while shouting “death to America” and “down, down America.”

Embassy employees and diplomats were forced to flee the location and are now in hiding.

The U.S. airstrikes conducted on Sunday came in response after the Kata’ib Hezbollah militia launched a 30+ rocket attack on the K1 military base near Kirkuk, Iraq, which left one U.S. defense contractor dead, and four other U.S. service members injured, according to a Pentagon statement.

The U.S. airstrikes killed 25 militia members and injured 51, and the militia vowed to strike back on the U.S. in revenge.

Member of the House of Representatives, and the candidate for prime minister, Faik Sheikh Ali, confirmed today, Wednesday, that the attack on the American embassy in Baghdad has cost the Iraqi government more than $100 million.

Sheikh Ali said in a tweet followed by "Al-Akhbariya", that "the United States appreciates the damage of the attackers attack on its embassy in Baghdad, at 100 million dollars, an American price of a fence, door, door and jaggoubah."

He added, "Iraq will bury it from the budget of his people," pointing out that it "demands that the leaders of the attacks on the embassy be handed over quietly or leave it to them to hunt them with the kazwa or zinc."

Today's international newspapers dealt with angry protests that took place in front of the United States embassy in Baghdad; and the results of many comparisons between the recent attack and previous attacks on American diplomatic facilities, and highlighted the role of Iraq as a collision point between the influence of the United States and Iran.

Baghdad: Yassin Iraq

A number of demonstrators in Tahrir Square chanted, on Tuesday night, not to leave the square and that the embassy intruders did not represent them, and this came after the tweet of Minister of Sadr, Saleh Mohamed al-Iraqi, not to leave the square.

Yesterday, Saleh Mohammed al-Iraqi said that there is evidence indicating that the demonstrations in front of the American embassy in Baghdad are aimed at ending the reformist people's demonstrations, calling for `` revolutionaries '' to persist and continue to the demonstrations until the early elections.

On Tuesday, dozens of supporters of the Popular Mobilization stormed the security-fortified Green Zone and reached the American Embassy, erected its first walls and burned two gates, and their sit-in still stands in front of the embassy building.

The importance of the US embassy in Iraq does not lie only in its political value and its location in the Middle East. The embassy that was stormed yesterday by the crowd protesters has characteristics that make it unique.

According to a report by "Fox News" network, the US embassy in Baghdad is the largest around the world, as it is the same size as the Vatican City, and the embassy was established on an area of 104 acres, where it is considered the largest of the largest American embassy in the past (the Yerevan embassy) about five times.

Thousands of employees

The embassy was opened in January 2009, after a series of construction operations costing more than $ 750 million, to accommodate approximately 16,000 employees and contractors.

The embassy complex is located on the Tigris River, west of the 14th of July Bridge. It consists of 21 buildings, with an area of approximately 80 soccer fields, making it larger than the United Nations Complex in New York.

Playgrounds and lounges

The embassy complex consists of five main sections, which are six housing complexes, water and waste facilities, a power station, two diplomatic buildings, and an entertainment section.

The embassy also contains theaters, restaurants, a shopping center, swimming pool, gym, basketball and soccer fields, and apartment complexes.

Protection

And the Marines are protecting the American embassy in Baghdad, which has strengthened its building structures more than two and a half times the number of other embassies, in addition to containing five high security entrances and an emergency entrance, according to a report by "CNBC News".

The engineering design of the embassy was not published publicly, but it was designed with capabilities that guarantee it self-sufficiency in energy and water, in light of the electricity and water cuts in Baghdad, and the security disturbances that erupt from time to time.

Exceptional immunization

The fence surrounding the embassy is at least 9 feet high, and is made of reinforced concrete that is strong enough to disperse the force of the blast from a car bomb, missile, or mortar attack.

From the inside, the embassy was exceptionally fortified, as it was designed as an American fortress against biological bombs, as it was equipped with an air purification system from any chemical or biological attack, in addition to small windows that look like cracks.

Five thousand officials

The American Embassy is located in the Green Zone in Baghdad, which has an area of about 10 square kilometers, and it contained thousands of housing units. Currently, the owners receive compensation every month, in exchange for the exploitation of their homes.

The Green Zone is considered one of the safest areas in Baghdad, and about five thousand officials and a civilian contractor are currently residing in it. It is surrounded by concrete walls and barbed walls and has many checkpoints, and is surrounded by the Tigris River from the south and east sides.
