While an admittedly very remote possibility, scientists and US gov officials knew there was a possibility the first atom bomb could have blown up the entire earth.

And they still set it off.

Learning that in school was so profound for me it left me reeling for days.

It completely upended my absolute and firm conviction of the integrity, morality, and character of government employees.

I can honestly say sitting in that eighth grade classroom, quietly reading the history lesson, the entire trajectory of my life ricocheted.

I didn't realize it at the time, but after that day I began to learn how to read between the lines to understand what wasn't in words screamed the loudest.
