An official military source revealed Wednesday the establishment of a US military base near the district of Tal Afar in Mosul. 

Lt. Col. Mahdi al-Khafaji, head of the Iraqi army's heavy military vehicles unit, said in a press statement that the establishment of the base came under consultations between US and Iraqi forces last Friday in the Zammar area west of Mosul. 

According to Khafaji, the technical and engineering teams completed more than 50% of the work of establishing the base. 

The military base is to be used to oversee the liberation of Tal Afar district, north-west of Mosul, from the control of Daqash. 

Al-Khafaji pointed out that US special forces and advisers arrived in armored vehicles to the location of the base. 

Since the end of the Mosul battle on July 10, Iraqi forces are preparing to launch an attack on Tal Afar, but it is not clear when the military campaign will begin. 

The target area is a 60 km long front and a width of about 40 km. It consists of the town of Tal Afar (Tal Afar district center) and the towns of Ayadiyah and Al-Halabiya, as well as 47 villages. 

Colonel Ahmed al-Jubouri, an officer in the Ninewa Operations Command (Army), said the establishment of the base reinforced views on Iraqi forces moving towards Tal Afar.
