My contact in Baghdad sent me a 50 and a 250 but these notes were not released yet were in the banks there three months ago.

Unitedrich
My question is if the Central Bank of Iraq did not exist before 2002, how can it have that on the back of the notes? It couldnt be 1970s vintage, unless as Carla says Somebodys messing with our heads

Trimark
If so they are being sold as legitimate. In another thread Chief mentioned SilverGreetings.com and they are selling the smaller notes and coins now. IMO, this is really GREAT news! Edited to add: But wait ..... these are from a long time ago. So .... this could be GREAT news or ... not.

Yes, but if Unitedrich is correct that the CBI didn't exsist before 2002 then why would the Central Bank of Iraq words be printed on them?
Chief V
My question is if the Central Bank of Iraq did not exist before 2002, how can it have that on the back of the notes? It couldnt be 1970s vintage, unless as Carla says Somebodys messing with our heads In 1956 the National Bank of Iraq became the Central Bank of Iraq. Its responsibilities included the issuing and the management of currency, control over foreign exchange transactions, and the regulation and supervision of the banking system. It kept accounts for the government, and it handled government loans. Over the years, legislation has considerably enlarged the Central Bank's authority. In 1959 the peg was switched from the British pound to the United States dollar at the rate of 1 dinar = 2.8 dollars. http://www.cbi.iq/history.html

Also - wouldn't the planning and design of these notes preceed printing? If they are dated for 2002 - these may be images of the proposed currency designs - possibly? Unitedrich
Yes, but if Unitedrich is correct that the CBI didn't exsist before 2002 then why would the Central Bank of Iraq words be printed on them? Carla, I stand corrected. The CBI was formed in 1947 as I just found out. Unitedrich - Where are you seeing the 2002 date? I looked at all of these notes and don't see a date on any of them. Also - wouldn't the planning and design of these notes preceed printing? If they are dated for 2002 - these may be images of the proposed currency designs - possibly? I was using the timeframe before 2003 when the notes began circulating. there was not any specific reference on my end to 2002. sorry for any confusion
