IRAQIS TAKE TO THEIR BIKES TO PROMOTE HEALTHY LIFESTYLES

Iraq, February 6, 2017

Around 200 cyclists took to the streets of Baghdad on Saturday (February 4), in a bid to encourage more people to get on the saddle and lead a healthier lifestyle.

Like many cities around the world, Baghdad suffers from congestion and pollution from cars. Local police suggest there are around 3 million cars in the Iraqi capital alone so more people are now looking at cycling as an option to get around.

The ride was organized by The Babylon Tower Institution and their Deputy Head, Thikra Sirsam is feeling hopeful.

'With this initiative (bike ride), we aim to encourage people to use cycling as a means of transport, particularly for short distances, which will solve some of the road congestion. It will also decrease pollution and smoke. In addition to that, it is an attempt to create better civil status and a better environment. Moreover, cycling is a sport which will improve your health,'' said Thikra.

The Babylon Tower Institution aims to carry out similar bike rides every month in other Iraqi towns and cities. It believes it will help people like students arrive at school and universities on time, rather than be stuck in a traffic jam.

Many Iraqis find themselves in long queues at checkpoints around the city and being on a bike would make passing through much quicker.

Despite the security situation in Baghdad, journalist Ifrah Shauqi believes initiatives like this bring people together.

''The Iraqi life will remain stronger than all the weapons of evil people who try to kill us. We will continue to celebrate together and love each other. The sun has gathered us together and our faces are uncovered. We love our country. Despite the hardships, we will become stronger,' said Shauqi.

The institution also hopes that more women will feel encouraged to use bikes as a means of transport and benefit from the exercise of cycling.

But many roads in Baghdad are in need of repair so cyclists will have to be extra careful navigating their way on their journeys.
