Thousands of people took part in a gun amnesty event in Los Angeles on Wednesday, exchanging their guns for supermarket gift cards.

The annual gun buyback is usually held in May, but Los Angeles brought the event forward in response to the recent shootings of 26 people at a primary school in Connecticut and two firemen in New York state.

The program, which allows guns to be turned in with no questions asked saw handguns, rifles and shotguns exchanged for $100 store gift cards while assault weapons earned owners $200.

There have been 8,000 guns of different types collected since the event was introduced in 2009. Meanwhile the crime rate in the city has decreased by a third.

Yep most of the weapons collected are stolen and the perps are getting paid for it. Then they will go out and steal more and use them in crimes or just stash them away till the next round of freebies comes in and the whole cycle starts over again. Is a legal gun owner going to hand over a $1000 AR for a few loves of bread. Yeah right.
