Iraq.. an unprecedented celebration of the "Gulf 25" teams after an absence of 44 years

Amidst great Iraqi hopes for success in organizing the football tournament

Iraq.. An unprecedented celebration of the "Gulf 25" teams, after an absence of 44 years

Ibrahim Al-Khazen / Anatolia

The city of Basra, in southern Iraq, continues an unprecedented celebration of the "Gulf 25" football teams, which Baghdad returns to organize after an absence of about 44 years.

"Gulf 25" will start on Friday, from Basra, until January 19, with the participation of 8 teams: Iraq (the host country), Bahrain (the defending champion), Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the Emirates, the Sultanate of Oman, Kuwait, and Yemen.

Iraq hosted the "Arab Gulf Cup" for the first time in 1979 and won it, and with the International Federation of Football Associations (FIFA) banned since 1999, organizing football competitions in the country due to security conditions, Baghdad was unable to organize the tournament in 2014, before the ban was partially lifted in 2018.

With the return to host the "Gulf Cup" for the second time in Iraq's history, the streets and shops of Basra witnessed an unprecedented atmosphere, including Iraqi youth drawing murals bearing sports drawings and flags of the participating countries.

The flags of the participating countries also fluttered in most of the streets of Basra, and its roads were crowded with fans from different countries in their traditional costumes, especially before the start of the opening match on Friday evening, between Iraq and the Sultanate of Oman.

Short video clips circulated, via Twitter, showing a wide welcome by Iraqis in the streets of Basra to fans from various countries of the tournament.

Video clips also circulated, bearing songs of welcome and other folkloric ones, including the title "The people of the Gulf are our brothers," and others of Omanis singing, "O people of Basra, we (we) have reached you, the people of generosity, you (you), and we have come to you (we have come to you)."

The Iraqi public celebration was remarkable, with the arrival of the Saudi national team bus, Thursday, to the "Iqama" hotel in Basra.

In front of the bus, Iraqis raised the Saudi flag and chanted songs and phrases of encouragement for the "Al-Akhdar" team, in an image that re-encourages a wide Arab world, which was hosted by Qatar, especially after its defeat by the Argentine national team.

Bassem Al-Khazraji, an Iraqi, celebrated via Twitter the enthusiastic reception, saying: "The Iraqi fans receive the Saudi team's bus. Have you seen this scene before? Was an Arab team received in this way by the fans of an Arab country?"

While the Bahraini journalist, Muhammad Qasim, described the atmosphere of the celebration in Basra as "beautiful from a hospitable people," commentator of "Al-Kass Sports Channels" Khaled Al-Hadi confirmed his happiness with "these joys," according to what was reported by the Iraqi News Agency, on Friday.

The agency confirmed that "Basra Corniche was crowded Friday morning with large numbers of Iraqi families coming from various provinces, and its streets were filled with many vehicles coming from the Gulf for encouragement."

"The security situation in the province is safe and stable, and everyone noticed this through the roaming of brothers from the Gulf countries freely and without the escort of security forces," the agency quoted the director of the Basra Police Media Department, Bassem Ghanim al-Maliki, as saying.

And the Iraqi Civil Aviation Authority confirmed, on Friday, that Basra International Airport is witnessing momentum in the flights of the coming Gulf and Arab delegations.

And this Iraqi celebration through this unprecedented atmosphere reinforced high hopes among leaders in Iraq for the success of the organization and the strengthening of Gulf cooperation with Baghdad.

And the head of the Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq, Sheikh Hammam Hamoudi, said, on Friday, in a statement: "We all hope that the brothers, through Gulf 25, will get to know the reality of Iraq and its people, so that everyone will start for more cooperation and integration."

Mohsen al-Mandalawi, First Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, said in a statement: "We must show respect and reverence for the stance of the people of Basra for their generous hospitality and warm welcome to the Gulf teams and fans," calling on the Iraqis to encourage all the championship teams.

With impressive performances.. Basra opens Gulf 25 (live)

Baghdad - Nas

On Friday, the 25th Gulf Championship was opened in Basra Stadium, in southern Iraq, with a distinguished ceremony and a large audience.

The ceremony witnessed dazzling light shows that shed light on the ancient civilizations of Iraq.

The Iraqi artist Hussam Al-Rassam performed a song that welcomed the guests of Iraq participating in the tournament.

The ceremony began with a speech from "Sinbad" the marine, the legendary figure from the tales of One Thousand and One Nights, who roamed the seas and oceans with his trade, starting from Basra.

The ceremony opened with dazzling light shows

The competitions will open with a traditional confrontation, within the first group, between the owner of the land and Oman at the Basra International Stadium, in which the “Lions of Mesopotamia” aspire to achieve a seventh victory at the expense of the Omani “Al-Ahmar”, who is looking for a third victory.

It is expected that "Gulf 25" will be the first challenge that the Spaniard, Jesús Casas, will face, coach of the Iraqi national team, in his first official appearance after his appointment. He said, "All teams are aspiring to compete in this tournament. We have a young group of players in whose abilities we have confidence despite their first participation. I was looking forward to the participation of the largest number of professional players in European leagues, and only a few had the opportunity to join."

And after the friendly match between Iraq and Kuwait, which ended in a lackluster victory at the expense of the Kuwaiti "Azraq" with a goal without a response, he found a need to remedy the situation early, so he asked the Iraqi Federation to summon the Qatari players Al-Shamal and Al-Markhiya, Amjad Atwan and Ayman Hussein, to strengthen the team's capabilities.

And about the method used and because he worked in the Spanish school, he explained, "We will certainly rely on the Spanish style of play, and we will seek to impose a specific method of play that is close to the Spanish."

On the other hand, the renewed Omani national team, led by Croatian coach Branko Ivankovic (67 years), who was appointed in early 2020, hopes to restore memories of the 2017 Kuwait Gulf Cup final when it won its second title after the first at home in 2009.

The Yemeni national team will start its participation by meeting the Saudi U-23 team, led by coach Saad Al-Shehri, at Basra Stadium also in the second group match.

The Saudi Olympic team enters the tournament armed with the first team's presentation in the Qatar 2022 World Cup, where it achieved a historic victory over champions Argentina 2-1 before being eliminated from the group stage.

The Czech coach, Miroslav Soukop, is aware of the difficulty of the opening confrontation with Saudi Arabia, but "the national team went through good conditions during the preparation period. The Yemeni national team is in a strong group and we are looking for a club in front of it," he said.

The second group, which includes the defending champion Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait and the Emirates, is almost ambiguous and subject to fluctuations and possibilities, as long as these teams have a legacy in the championship titles.

And while Bahrain entered the coronation line and snatched the title of the 2019 edition in Doha, Kuwait is at the top of the title holders (10), compared to 3 for each of Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Iraq, and two titles for each of the Emirates and Oman.

Bahrain, led by the Portuguese, Helio Souza, will start the difficult campaign against the Emirates, on Saturday, at Al-Mina Stadium, and on the same day, the Kuwaiti Blue will face its Qatari counterpart, who is also participating in a semi-equivalent squad.

This is Al-Annabi's first appearance after a disappointing World Cup at home, under the custody of his new Portuguese coach, Bruno Pinheiro, who will take over the leadership, instead of Spaniard Felix Sanchez, whose services the Qatar Federation abandoned after suffering three painful losses in the World Cup and its final solution.

The Kuwaiti national team is also seeking, as it is going through a recent construction period, to emerge with a new reality that restores confidence to its fans under the leadership of its Portuguese coach, Roy Pinto, who was appointed four months ago. competitions.

The Argentine, Rodolfo Aruabarina, has been leading the Emirates since the beginning of 2022 after the dismissal of the Dutchman, Bert van Marwijk, as a result of the national team’s level shaken and its results declining, and the historical top scorer Ali Mabkhout was excluded from his squad.

Expected".

And the Iraqi Federation decided not to offer it directly through the usual shops, in order to give the opportunity to obtain it by all the public, and not to limit it to the fans of the "Lions of Mesopotamia."
On the other hand, the Saudi Al-Akhdar fans continue to arrive in Basra by land and air to attend the match, including a private plane that transported a large number of fans.

The Independent/- Iraq ignored the Iranian protest against the use of the name "Arabian Gulf" by Iraqi officials, led by Prime Minister Muhammad Shia' al-Sudani, as it did not issue any response or comment on what was announced by the Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman, Nasser Kanaan, about "taking the necessary measures regarding the incident of using Naming the Arabian Gulf by Iraq.

This position came after Al-Sudani used the phrase "Arabian Gulf" in the context of his welcome to the Gulf sports delegations during the opening of the "Gulf 25" championship in Basra. The “Arabian Gulf” is a common phrase in Iraq and through all official correspondence, as well as the leader of the “Sadr movement” Muqtada al-Sadr used it in his tweet, in which he welcomed the organization of the tournament in Basra Governorate.

Regarding the Iranian objection and how to respond to it regarding the Arabism of the Gulf, Maj. Gen. Dr. Jamal al-Halbousi, an expert on the Iraqi international borders and waters, told the Saudi newspaper Al-Sharq Al-Awsat and its independent follow-up that “the history of each country does not mean that it prevails over another country, as each country has its own history within The region and what is an indicator for us other than what is an indicator for others, ”noting that“ the first map, since the eighteenth century, was French and referred to the name of the Arabian Gulf.

And before that, history mentions the presence of Khosrau within the land of the two Mesopotamia, and he did not reach the banks of the Gulf, which bore multiple names such as the Gulf of Arabia, the Arabian Sea, the Sea of Oman, the Gulf, or the Sea of Basra for the area confined between the Strait of Hormuz and the Arabian Sea.

Al-Halbousi added that "the Safavid, Qajar and Pahlavi states had no evidence that the two shores of the Gulf were Persian." He explained that "the Shatt al-Arab is a shatt mediating an Arab formation on its banks without doubt or suspicion, but even the geography of Iraq, as there is an area for Iraq on the Iranian side, but it is Arab." He said, “The naming of a specific period of time does not mean that it is fixed or binding on another country. The periods of history, including history

Pre-Islam and the eras of Islamic rule with its four periods are too big to accept a proposal that contradicts the Arab character of the Gulf.

As for the media professor at “Ahl al-Bayt University,” Dr. Ghaleb al-Daami, he believes that “the Iranian objection is unjustified and incorrect, because the Gulf has been called the Arabian Gulf since ancient times, and it was also known as the Gulf of Basra. Likewise, those who live on the banks of this waterway, and this is very important, are Arabs, whether from the regions belonging to Iran now or from the other side, which is the Arab Gulf states.

Al-Daami added, in a statement to Asharq Al-Awsat, that “the question that arises now is: Why did Iran not object previously when the tournament was organized in Kuwait, Qatar and other countries, and therefore why does it object now when the tournament is organized in Iraq? Why did you not object to the previous regime, which called the Gulf Arab in all its political speeches? And why is it objecting now to a government that it considers close to it according to political descriptions, or at least that the political parties that formed this government are the closest to Iran?

And he points out that «the issue is greater than just naming the Gulf, but rather related to what is more important, which is the great public interaction that was in the province of Basra in terms of receiving Arabs from the Gulf countries and interacting with them in the way that everyone saw and what it carried of unparalleled support system" rel="">support, whether for the Gulf teams or for the Gulf audience, and most importantly in My appreciation is the clarification of the reality of love and interaction between Iraqis and their brothers, the people of the Gulf, as an expression of their national and Arab extension, which is an important point that cannot be bypassed. Last Monday, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani confirmed that Tehran had informed the Iraqi government of its refusal to name the "Gulf 25" as the Arab Gulf Football Championship instead of the Persian Gulf.

Kanaani said during his weekly press conference, "The Iranian diplomatic apparatus had a reaction to Iraq's publication of the name of the Arabian Gulf instead of the Persian Gulf, which cannot be changed by any reality, whether it is sports or anywhere else."

And the Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman added, "We have informed our opinion of the Iraqi government, and the issue came within the framework of a sports issue, and we have seen the reactions of the Ministry of Sports in Iran regarding this issue."

And the Iranian Football Association announced, last Saturday, that it intends to file an official complaint with the International Federation of Football Associations (FIFA) regarding the “Gulf 25” championship, which is currently being held in the Iraqi city of Basra.

According to ISNA, the Iranian federation confirmed in a statement its intention to file a complaint with FIFA because of the use of the name "Arabian Gulf Cup" in the current tournament.

The statement indicated that "the Persian Gulf is a historical name that applies to all languages and maps, whether modern or ancient, and is proven in the world atlas," according to its description.

The statement also indicated that the Iranian federation would send relevant documents to FIFA in order to correct "erroneous trends against international norms in the coming years."

It is noteworthy that the Iraqi Football Association and the Gulf Cup Federation did not launch, in any of the forums or conferences held before and after the launch of the Gulf 25, the name "Arabian Gulf" and it was not marketed through the media campaign.

Iraq will host the "Gulf 25" football tournament, where all the football teams of the Gulf Cooperation Council countries, in addition to Yemen and Iraq, will participate in the tournament, which will take place in the Iraqi province of Basra for the period between 6-19 January.
For its part, the Iraqi authorities have provided all means of success that ensure the exit of the championship in a way that reflects Iraq's civilization and its well-established identity since ages.
The President of the Gulf Cup Football Association, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa bin Ahmed Al Thani, praised the opening ceremony of the Gulf Cup 25, while calling for not paying attention to the negatives.
Iraq apologized to Kuwait after organizational problems in the Basra Gulf Cup prompted the Kuwaiti delegation to leave, as a stampede occurred on Friday, prior to the opening of the tournament, which resulted in the Kuwaiti Emir's representative being unable to enter the stadium.
The tournament is organized every two years, as the first edition was launched in 1970 in Bahrain, while Qatar hosted the last edition in 2019. As for Iraq, it hosted the tournament for the first time in 1979, “Gulf 5” in the capital, Baghdad, where it was crowned with the title at that time.

Commenting on this issue, a member of the media committee of the Iraqi Football Association , Ammar Sati , said, "Iraq made strenuous efforts with all its institutions and the concerned authorities to host the 25th Gulf Cup in the city of Basra after an absence of 43 years," indicating that the tournament constitutes a real depth for the countries and peoples of the region.

Sati added that there is a large public and media presence in Basra to broadcast the tournament, and that tens of thousands of countries participating in the tournament enter daily to Basra to follow the tournament from the field, pointing out that the Gulf Cup is one of the most important tournaments that teams resort to to prepare their teams for events. Other international events such as the World Cup and the Asian Nations Cup, pointing out that the Iraqi national team takes the tournament seriously to prepare itself for these tournaments.

For his part, the Iraqi sports critic, Khudair Hamoudi, said, "The Gulf 25 edition for this year is distinguished because Iraq was denied hosting the tournament for more than 40 years, in addition to the public presence and the warm welcome by the people of Basra to the guests."

He pointed out that the championship constitutes an opportunity for the Iraqi team to make progress technically, as it plays on its land and among its fans, and also expressed its belief that the Oman and Bahrain teams are the closest to the Iraqi team's competition for the Arab Gulf Cup.
Hamoudi explained that the tournament could have come out stronger had it not been for the participation of Qatar and Saudi Arabia in the reserve team, not the first, indicating that Iraq intends to submit a request to host the Asian Championship in 2027.

The Iraqi political analyst, Jabbar Al-Mashhadani, said, "The history of Iraqi relations with the Gulf states was marred by many periods of imbalance, especially after the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait, but the Arab Gulf openness to Iraq began to appear during the four years and culminated in the establishment of the Gulf 25."

Al-Mashhadani pointed out that breaking the psychological barrier and re-establishing Iraqi relations with the Gulf countries again was welcomed by the Iraqi people, indicating that Basra was and still is a meeting place for the peoples of the region, and he pointed to the generosity of the people of Basra who opened their homes to receive the fans who came behind their teams.

The Independent/- The Iraqi government is still ignoring the Iranian protest against Iraqi officials, including Prime Minister Muhammad Shia' al-Sudani, using the term "Arabian Gulf", while Tehran insists on escalating it. Its foreign ministry summoned the Iraqi ambassador to it and informed him of its protest against not naming the Gulf as "Persian".

While Iraqi bloggers and opinion makers were preoccupied with the Iranian insistence on trying to cancel the name of the Arab Gulf, including a congratulatory telegram that Iran intended to send to Iraq after its team’s victory over the Saudi team in the “Gulf 25” held in Basra, using the term “brother” for Iraq with the phrase “the Gulf.” Persian »; Many considered it a clear Iranian interference in an Iraqi sovereign internal matter, criticizing the government's silence on the series of Iranian protests.

On the other hand, observers and experts believe that Iraq 's disregard of the Iranian protests aims to avoid entering into a diplomatic crisis with Iran because of this term, especially as it is now trying to work to bridge the views of the countries of the region, especially between Iran and Saudi Arabia.

In light of the intensification of the dispute, especially on social media, regarding this issue, there are those who sharply criticized the Iraqi government’s silence, not only in terms of naming Iran the Gulf as “Persian”, but also for its use of the term “Arvand” for the Shatt al-Arab, which is a waterway. Purely Iraqi, as it represents the mouth of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. It is noteworthy that the Algiers agreement signed by Iraq during the era of the former regime in 1975 with Iran, the Shah, allowed Iran to control the second bank of the Shatt al-Arab. Despite the unilateral cancellation of that agreement by the late President Saddam Hussein in 1979, Iran sticks to it, especially since it is in its interest.

While Baghdad did not officially respond to Tehran, the "Sadr movement" led by Muqtada al-Sadr, who was the subject of attacks from the Iranian Revolutionary Guard's media, responded after using the term "Arabian Gulf" in a tweet, and rejected Iranian demands to apologize.

"There is no justification for Iran summoning the Iraqi ambassador to Tehran," Issam Hussein, a leader in the "Sadr movement," said in a statement on Wednesday. 25) residing in the province of Basra ». And between Hussein, “Iran is very disturbed by the issue of integration between the Iraqi people and the peoples of the Arab Gulf states, as it does not want this rapprochement for fear of an increase in tourism trips in the future and the development of matters into economic and investment issues; That is why it launches attacks and escalates on a daily basis against this matter by objecting to naming the Arabian Gulf. He added, “Iran has problems with the Arab Gulf states; That is why it does not want any rapprochement between Iraq and these countries, and it does not want the Iraqis to integrate with the Arab peoples, as it wants Iraq to continue to follow it in its foreign policy.

For his part, Muntazer Nasser, editor-in-chief of the Iraqi electronic newspaper Al-Alam Al-Jadeed, told Asharq Al-Awsat, “It is surprising that the Iraqi ambassador in Tehran was summoned, in protest against the Iraqi prime minister’s use of the official name for the Arabian Gulf instead of Persian,” noting that “ This summons is contrary to diplomatic norms and a dangerous precedent that shows Iran's efforts to interfere and control even the official Iraqi discourse. He added, "States are free to name their lands, regions, waters and landmarks, and no other country has the right to impose its national names."

Nasser stressed, "The length of the Arab coast on the Gulf is 3,490 km, compared to the Iranian coast, which does not exceed 2,440 km in length, in addition to the fact that the Arab countries bordering the Gulf are 7 Arab and Iran is the only Persian state."

An Iraqi minister proposes to involve the Iranian national team in the Gulf Cup

On Friday, the former minister and former Iraqi ambassador to Ankara, Hassan al-Janabi, proposed the participation of the Iranian national team in the Gulf Cup.

Al-Janabi said in a post titled "Gulf-25 again", which was followed by "Nass" (January 13, 2023), that "if the Iranian demand was to participate in the Gulf Championship, I would be a supporter. Sports, and football in particular, bring people together and eliminate the thorny shadows of history." Politics rivalries, and this tournament in particular has a special taste, as it represented a turning point in the region, but rather a stepping stone to a secure future, and created an atmosphere saturated with love, brotherhood and peace.

He added, "Therefore, bringing history fragmented from its natural context into a popular sporting event is not a diplomatic or historical gain, on the contrary. True diplomacy is the one that explores people's hearts and emotions and develops its tools and means in line with logic."

Al-Sudani on the name "Arabian Gulf": Iraq is part of the Arab system

Shafaq News/ The Iraqi Prime Minister, Muhammad Shia'a al-Sudani, refused to apologize for naming the "Arabian Gulf" instead of the "Persian Gulf" as Iran had asked him, stressing that Iraq is part of the Arab system and keen on perpetuating the relationship with the Arab Gulf states, while referring to the continuation of Mediation between Saudi Arabia and Iran.

Last Wednesday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abdul Amir Allahian announced the summoning of the Iraqi ambassador to Tehran, in protest against the use of a name he described as "falsified", in the twenty-fifth edition of the Arab Gulf Championship, which is currently being held in the city of Basra. Corrected this issue (this error) in a recent article on the virtual space.

Al-Sudani said, in an interview with the German "Deutsche Welle" channel, on the sidelines of his visit to Berlin, that "the Arab Gulf countries are a reality," adding, "We do not want to get involved in these problems that some are trying to raise."

And the Iraqi Prime Minister continued, "We respect all points of view, and today we are part of the Arab system, and we are keen on perpetuating our relationship with the Arab Gulf states."

He pointed out that "the last championship is clear as a station for meeting these countries in Iraq after the return of nearly 43 years."

Regarding his country's relations with the Gulf states and Iran, Al-Sudani revealed that "Baghdad continues its efforts to mediate between Saudi Arabia and Iran," adding: "We are finding a response from Iran and Saudi Arabia, and we are continuing these attempts to resume meetings in Baghdad soon."

He continued, "Bringing points of view between Iran and the countries of the region, including Saudi Arabia, is an approach that the Iraqi government has followed and continues to follow, and it will contribute to easing tensions in the region, which will reflect on the security of Iraq and the region."

And he indicated that "any attack on any part or spot in Iraq is unacceptable, whether it is from Iran or Turkey," noting that "we faced the recent attacks that took place in the border areas with an official position of rejection, and at the same time, we were keen on continuing the dialogue." With these countries, with whom we have distinguished relations and common interests.

Al-Sudani stressed that "the Iraqi borders enjoy the focus of the Iraqi security services to prevent the infiltration of terrorists in the first place, and the growth of drug activity," noting that "balanced relations between Iraq and neighboring countries according to the principle of mutual respect, common interests, and non-interference in internal affairs is the best approach for us as a government."

Earlier last week, the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that it had taken what it described as "necessary measures" after Iraq used the name "Arabian Gulf" instead of "Persian".

On the eighth of January, the Iranian parliament attacked the Iraqi Prime Minister, Muhammad Shia’ al-Sudani, and the leader of the Sadrist movement, Muqtada al-Sadr, in language that seemed “arrogant” against the backdrop of statements about the Gulf Cup in its 25th edition hosted by Basra, and they mentioned the term “Arabian Gulf”, which Iran strongly objects to it.

The Sadrist movement, led by Muqtada al-Sadr, responded to the Iranian parliament's request for the leader of the movement to apologize after his tweet about the "Arabian Gulf" term.

The Iranian Football Association objected to naming the tournament as the "Arabian Gulf" instead of the "Persian Gulf", and submitted a protest note to the President of the International Federation of Football in this regard.

Iraqi football experts believe that this matter, which has emerged recently, on the football scene, may negatively affect the 25th edition of the Arab Gulf Cup hosted by Basra, and the smoothness of the tournament, and they warned against moving to a political arena that strips the positive essence of the tournament.

Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani refused to apologize for naming the "Arabian Gulf" instead of the "Persian Gulf" as requested by Iran, stressing that Iraq is part of the Arab system and keen on the sustainability of the relationship with the Arab Gulf countries, while pointing to the continued mediation between Saudi Arabia and Iran.

The Iranian Foreign Minister Abdul Amir Allahian announced last Wednesday the summoning of the Iraqi ambassador to Tehran in protest against the use of a name described as "forged", in the twenty-fifth edition of the Arabian Gulf Championship currently held in the city of Basra, and Amir Abdullah pointed out that the Iraqi Prime Minister Muhammad Shia Al-Sudani corrected this issue (this error) in an article recently published on the virtual space

Al-Sudani said, in an interview with the German channel "Deutsche Welle", on the sidelines of his visit to Berlin, that "the Arab Gulf countries this is a reality," adding, "We do not want to get into these problems that some are trying to raise."

"We respect all points of view, and today we are part of the Arab system, and we are keen to perpetuate our relationship with the Arab Gulf countries," the Iraqi prime minister said.

He pointed out that "the recent tournament is clear as a stop for these countries to meet in Iraq after the return of nearly 43 years."

On his country's relations with the Gulf countries and Iran, Al-Sudani revealed that "Baghdad continues its efforts to mediate between Saudi Arabia and Iran," adding: "We find a response from Iran and Saudi Arabia, and we are continuing these attempts to resume meetings in Baghdad soon."

He continued: "Convergence of views between Iran and the countries of the region, including Saudi Arabia, is an approach followed by the Iraqi government and continues to follow, and will contribute to reducing tensions in the region, which will be reflected in the security of Iraq and the region."

He pointed out that "any attack on any part or spot in Iraq, is rejected, whether from Iran or Turkey," noting that "we faced the recent attacks that took place in the border areas with an official position rejecting, and at the same time, we were keen to continue dialogue with these countries with which we have distinguished relations and common interests."

Al-Sudani stressed that "the Iraqi borders enjoy the focus of the Iraqi security services to prevent the infiltration of terrorists in the first place, and the growth of drug activity," noting that "balanced relations between Iraq and neighboring countries in accordance with the principle of mutual respect, common interests and non-interference in internal affairs is the best approach for us as a government."

Earlier last week, the Iranian Foreign Ministry announced that it had taken what it described as "necessary measures" after Iraq used the designation "Arabian Gulf" instead of "Persian".

On the eighth of January, the Iranian parliament attacked Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani and the leader of the Sadrist movement, Muqtada al-Sadr, in language that seemed "condescending" against the background of statements about the 25th Gulf Cup hosted by Basra, in which they mentioned the word "Arab Gulf", which Iran strongly objects to.

The Sadrist movement, led by Muqtada al-Sadr, responded to the Iranian parliament's demand that the leader of the movement apologize after tweeting about the word "Arab Gulf".

The Iranian Football Federation objected to the tournament being named "Arabian Gulf" instead of "Persian Gulf" and submitted a note of protest to the FIFA president.

Iraqi football experts believe that this matter, which has emerged in recent times, on the football scene, may negatively affect the 25th edition of the Arabian Gulf Cup hosted by Basra, and the flow of the tournament, and warned against moving to a political arena that removes the positive essence of the tournament.
