Iraq.. Thousands of Sadr's followers perform Friday prayers outside parliament

Al-Sadr's followers perform Friday prayers outside Parliament
August 12 2022
03:04 PM

Thousands of Muqtada al-Sadr's followers performed Friday prayers outside parliament in Baghdad today, in a show of support for their leader who has called on the Iraqi judiciary to dissolve parliament by the end of next week.

Thousands of Sadr's supporters gathered outside parliament for Friday prayers there. Most of them wore black clothes to celebrate the month of Muharram, while others wore white robes on their shoulders to symbolize the shrouds and their readiness to die.

The imam of a mosque, standing on a red platform erected outside parliament, said that Iraq will not be broken as long as al-Sadr is present and that there is no turning back from this revolution and that the people will not give up their demands.

Sadr's supporters have occupied the Iraqi parliament since July after a ten-month political stalemate following last October's elections. Al-Sadr was the biggest winner in the elections, but he failed to form a government free of Iran-backed parties. He withdrew his deputies from parliament and now prevents him from electing a new government and demands early elections.

Sadr said on Wednesday that the judiciary should dissolve parliament by the end of next week. He added without elaborating that if this does not happen, the revolutionaries will take another position.

Shafaq News / Multi-purpose demonstrations and supporting parties will start on Friday afternoon in the capital, Baghdad, and a number of governorates of the country, amid strict security measures, at a time when the sit-in of supporters of the leader of the Sadrist movement Muqtada al-Sadr enters its third week in a row in Al-Khadra (political decision-making area since system change).

Three areas of the capital, Baghdad, will be the scene of the demonstrations, which in turn will move to the governorates of Basra, Muthanna, Dhi Qar, Maysan, Diwaniyah, Wasit, Babil, in addition to Nineveh, all of which will start at five o'clock this afternoon.

Both the Shiite coordination framework, and the Sadrist movement opposed to it, issued several directives to their supporters in preparation for counter-demonstrations in the central and southern regions of Iraq, against the background of the aggravation of the political crisis, and its access to a closed road in the country.

This is the second counter-demonstrations for which the Shiite poles have mobilized since the Sadrists stormed the Iraqi parliament building, in protest against the nomination of the framework, Muhammad Shiaa al-Sudani, for the position of Prime Minister.

The political scene in Iraq has undergone a dangerous turn since supporters of the Sadrist movement led by prominent Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr stormed the parliament building in the fortified Green Zone in central Baghdad, and staged a sit-in in protest against Al-Sudani's nomination for the position of head of the next federal government.

Al-Sadr demonstrations

In confirmation of the above, the "minister of the leader" who is close to al-Sadr called, in a post on social media, what he described as "reform lovers" to prepare to "support reform" by gathering in his governorate, at five o'clock in the afternoon on Friday, and not Going home "until further notice".

He attributed the reasons for the demonstrations, including "to anger the corrupt", as well as "filling out legal forms to be submitted to the judiciary in order to dissolve parliament" in response to Al-Sadr's call to the Iraqi Supreme Judicial Council to dissolve parliament.

Frame demonstrations

As for the coordinating framework, it mobilized for demonstrations in Baghdad, specifically the suspension bridge leading to the Green Zone, in addition to demonstrations described as central to the south, with their starting point in Basra, and others for the north, centered in Nineveh, for the purpose of “supporting the law and preserving state institutions,” as he described it.

The organizing committee for the framework demonstrations stated that these demonstrations will start at five o'clock in the afternoon of Friday, which is the same time as the demonstrations on the green walls, from the side of the suspension bridge in the capital, Baghdad.

Communist demonstrations

On a parallel level, the Iraqi Communist Party also called on its supporters to demonstrate in Al-Firdaws Square in the center of the capital, Baghdad, a demonstration that may be less dangerous on the Iraqi scene, given the limited audience and their dwindling in recent years.

The Secretary of the Communist Party, Raed Fahmy, wrote in a tweet on Twitter, "The quota approach and its political system that incubates corruption have brought the political process to a standstill... A comprehensive change towards a state of citizenship has become a necessity."

He added that this must be "achieved peacefully through dissolving parliament, early elections and forming a transitional government," explaining that "Friday's demonstration in Al-Firdaws Square is a meeting place for all who aspire to an Iraq free of quotas, corruption and militias."

Constitutional obstruction

The political scene is living in a crisis situation and a dead end unprecedented in the history of Iraq, as more than 300 days have passed since the early elections without being able to form a new government in the country, and the survival of the caretaker government headed by Mustafa Al-Kazemi.

On the tenth of last October, Iraq held early legislative elections to get out of a political crisis that swept the country after large demonstrations in the central and southern regions in 2019 in protest against the widespread unemployment in society, the spread of financial and administrative corruption in government departments and institutions, and the deteriorating reality The service and the livelihood, which prompted the former prime minister, Adel Abdul-Mahdi, to resign under popular pressure.

As soon as the preliminary results of the elections were announced, the voices of political forces and actors rose in their rejection of losing many seats, accusing them of major fraud in the ballot, which was denied by the executive and judicial authorities, at a time when the United Nations and international organizations praised the integrity of the electoral process.

Shafaq News/ The Sadrist movement's Green Zone preacher and imam Muhannad al-Moussawi warned politicians opposed to the movement against trying to continue sharing power in Iraq, stressing that the supporters of the movement will continue their sit-ins until the parliament is dissolved and early elections in the country.

Al-Moussawi said in the Friday prayer sermon that was held inside the fortified Green Zone, that "the protesters went out to draw the features of the next stage for Iraq through a sound revolutionary democratic process and then an early democratic electoral process, as the leader of the Sadrist movement said."

He added that "there is no such thing as a retreat in the dictionary of this revolution, and in order to achieve the goals of this revolution, persistence is required," noting that the opportunity is ripe for change in light of the continuing sit-ins.

Al-Moussawi went on to say that "the history of contemporary Iraq has gone through two stages, one of the most severe stages. The first stage is one of the most severe stages in which the Baath Party exercised a bloody authority in which Iraq witnessed hunger, deprivation and the suppression of freedoms. Time is not far from the contemporaries of that fateful era," noting that "the second stage is represented by occupation, power-sharing, chaos, corruption and terrorism.”

Al-Khatib added, "The chance politicians knew who the Mahdi Army was when they were servants of the forces friendly to them, but these forces and the false false flags of those politicians did not benefit them, and the ISIS ideology did not intimidate us."

He continued, "Today, they know very well that the land held by (the Peace Brigades) cannot be invaded," addressing those politicians, "Your bet on undermining our resolve will fail, and Iraq will not be sold and you will not share it because we watered the land with our blood."

Shafaq News/ Civilian demonstrators in Al-Firdaws Square in central Baghdad stressed, on Friday, the necessity of dissolving the House of Representatives, which they described as "incapable", and holding early elections on its terms and conditions.

This came in a final statement signed by 10 parties (the Iraqi Communist Party, the Social Democratic Current Party, the Iraqi Nation Party, the National Civil Movement, the Nazl Movement to Take My Right to Democracy, the Faili Front, the Iraqi House Movement, the Democratic Current, the Consultative Council of Tishreen Movements, the National Forces and the Tishreen Democratic Movement).

The statement, which was received by Shafak News Agency, stated, "For more than a decade, the people and their civil and national forces have been emphasizing that this entire system is in dire need of real reforms, but none of the power parties and its politicians responded. The sectarian and racist laws and alignment will lead to the collapse of the country at the general levels and will generate exacerbated conflicts between the political forces, which in turn will negatively affect the life of the citizen. All the dominant forces in power bear the responsibility for what happened.”

He added, "Today, in the face of a deep crisis in the quota system and corruption, represented by the state of political impossibility, we affirm that change has become a national necessity, from which there is no retreat... and that not responding to the people's call for change, the political cost will be exorbitant for those who reject it, and for To achieve change in response to the aspirations of our people for a dignified, independent and prosperous life, and to preserve civil peace, must be based on the principles of peace, democracy and citizenship..and consecrate the unifying national identity, and preserve rights..freedoms..and achieve social justice.

The statement explained, "The civil and democratic forces, as they continue their peaceful struggle, believe that the will of the people is the decisive factor in the conflict, which we will not engage in except from a national standpoint keen on the future of Iraqis... a struggle for salvation from quotas and its failed forces... a struggle against The killers of the demonstrators..a struggle against the corrupt, regardless of their affiliation..a struggle for the confinement of arms in the hands of the state..a struggle for the state of citizenship, rights, and just law.

And the statement continued, "We reiterate once again the necessity of dissolving the impotent Parliament, and holding free and fair elections within one year, on its terms and conditions (a fair electoral law, an independent commission, the application of the parties' law) ... elections that reflect the true representation of the will of Iraqis. Any return to the failed approach to governance.. the Iraqis who have been engulfed in the fire of crises.. have the final say and to them the decision rests.

Dozens of civil parties and currents demonstrated earlier on Friday, in the center of the capital, Baghdad, to demand the dissolution of the Iraqi parliament. The demonstrators raised banners calling for the dissolution of Parliament and the end of quotas.

This comes in conjunction with demonstrations by the Sadrist movement in the Green Zone and the rest of the Iraqi provinces, as well as demonstrations by the coordination framework at the Green Zone gate from the side of the suspension bridge and the governorates of Basra and Nineveh.

Aug 13,2022

Earth News / The leader of the Sadrist movement, Muqtada al-Sadr, called today, Saturday, for a unified "millions of people" demonstration in the capital, Baghdad.

Al-Sadr wrote in a post seen by Earth News, "This is my last call... I have cleared my responsibility before my Lord, my father and my people, after the protest was divided into two camps... It became imperative for me to investigate which of the camps is more numerous and sympathetic to the Iraqi people, regardless of their affiliations."

He added, “After relying on God Almighty and His good success, I address this speech to the beloved Iraqi people, with their clans, segments, sects, and women, young and old, and children. corrupt and authoritarian.”

Al-Sadr continued, "Yes, I am counting on you and I feel brave and not betrayed...it is (the end of the last chance), through a united (peaceful) (million) demonstration from all Iraq's governorates, regions, villages and neighborhoods, and even from all its alleys and homes to head to the capital, Baghdad. Beloved, to Tahrir Square, and then to your protesting brothers to support reform for the love of Iraq, with a majestic (two million) march carrying the flags of Iraq and the banners of reform and the banners of liberation and with your loud voices that shake the thrones of the miserable .. Then return to your homes safely and securely.

And he added, "Let us send a million-popular message to the whole world that: Iraq is with reform..Reform is with Iraq, and there is no place for corruption and the corrupt. All of you are sponsors and all of you are responsible for reform. The decision is the people's decision, either reform or corruption that does not disappear and dependency takes root to erase all the rest of your bounties. And your dignity, and God helps for what they describe, so here is the month of Imam Hussein, who said: This is the humiliation of us.. So they rose to seek reform in your homeland as he requested reform in the nation of his grandfather, may God’s prayers be upon him and his family and the companions of the good.”

Al-Sadr continued, "O honorable patriots, you are on the cusp of a new resurrection and another dictator, perhaps in the guise of religion and belief.. and they are innocent of them.. God does not like corruption, and God does not waste the reward of reformers, and God will help you if you support him, so wait for the timing and instructions and prepare."

About ten months after the early parliamentary elections were held in Iraq, the political process is witnessing a blockage, which began with the opposition of the coordinating framework forces on the results of the elections, followed by the suspension of the sessions for selecting the president of the republic by the framework, and the failure to form a “majority government” by the leader of the Sadrist movement Muqtada Al-Sadr, which prompted the Sadrist bloc’s deputies to resign from Parliament, before Al-Sadr directed his supporters to an open sit-in inside the parliament building in the Green Zone in central Baghdad; In protest against the nomination of Muhammad Shia al-Sudani for prime minister, it was met with an open sit-in by the tire crowd in front of the Green Zone gate from the side of the suspension bridge, in response to al-Sadr's calls to dissolve parliament and re-elections after his demand to change the system and the constitution.

Baghdad - Dr. Hamid Abdullah

Sunday 14 2022 - 02:00

The leader of the Sadrist movement, Sabah Al-Saadi, said that the re-election has become an irreversible goal for a leader The Sadrist Movement, Muqtada al-Sadr.

Al-Saadi indicated that the reality on the ground confirms that three demands will be achieved, namely:

Re-election without the need to form a new government at the present time.

Keeping the electoral law unchanged to serve the framework forces.

Keep the Electoral Commission and there is no need for a new Commission.

On the other hand, a leader in the framework forces revealed that the demonstrations called for by the framework forces ended with sit-ins Near the suspension bridge in the vicinity of the green zone caused the rupture of the forces of the frame.

And he indicated that some leaders of the coordination framework rejected the idea of a sit-in in front of the gate of the Green Zone and that such a decision was taken A step that will cause a new crisis with the Sadrist movement, especially since there are attempts to solve the crisis with Muqtada Al-Sadr is friendly and understanding away from the language of the street.

He pointed out that most of those who demonstrated last Friday near the suspension bridge were supporters of the affiliated Al-Bashaer movement The leader of the State of Law coalition, Nuri al-Maliki, and the Asa’ib Ahl al-Haq movement headed by Qais Khazali and the Wisdom Movement supported by the support An invitation from their leaders.

The head of the Badr Organization Hadi al-Amiri and the head of the victory coalition Haider al-Abadi and others refused to confront the Sadrist movement with counter-sit-ins In anticipation of bloody confrontations that may be caused by the mobilization and the corresponding mobilization.

While followers of the coordination framework raised large pictures of the religious authority, Ali al-Sistani, and chanted slogans praising him, sources revealed In the city of Najaf, al-Sistani's office singled out Muqtada al-Sadr with an invitation to attend the funeral of Husseini at al-Sistani's house in Najaf.

The sources indicated that the call is a message of support for Al-Sadr against the framework forces that the religious authority refuses to deal with any of its leaders.

Sources close to leaders in the Sadrist movement say that the next few days will witness large sit-ins and demonstrations in The Shiite provinces are led and organized by the followers of Al-Sadr, and they are completely tyrannical and there is no space in them for the followers of the framework who gathered in Baghdad and left their provinces, thinking that the concentration of their gatherings in the capital might create a state of balance between them And among the followers of Al-Sadr.
