Shafaq News/ The Japanese Foreign Ministry announced today, Sunday, that Japan pledged Japan to provide low-interest loans, amounting to 300 million dollars, to modernize an oil refinery in Iraq.

The ministry said in a statement that Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi assured his Iraqi counterpart, Fouad Hussein, that Tokyo would provide up to 32.7 billion Japanese yen (300 million dollars), to help implement Iraq's plan to modernize one of its oil refineries.

The statement said that the financial assistance will be allocated to expand one of the main Iraqi refineries in the Basra Governorate in southern Iraq.

This came during Motegi's visit to Baghdad, the first since August 2006.

Iraq is seeking to work on developing refineries and offering some of them for investment to foreign companies, in order to secure its growing domestic needs of oil derivatives, which cost the country's general budget about $5 billion annually.
