Iraq court approves election result

Iyad Allawi's Iraqiya had a two-seat lead

over al-Maliki's bloc [AFP]

Iraq's supreme court has approved the final results of March 7 parliamentary elections, an important step towards the formation of a new government.

Tuesday's approval from the high court allows electoral blocs to begin negotiations on forming a government, after elections produced no clear winner.

"Based on the articles of the constitution we have decided to approve the election results," Midhat al-Mahmoud, the court's chief judge, said.

The final certification of the results have come nearly three months after an election many Iraqis hoped would lead to stability and an end to sectarian conflict.

A cross-sectarian coalition led by Iyad Allawi, a former prime minister, won two more seats than a mainly Shia bloc headed by Nouri al-Maliki, the incumbent premier.

Close contest

Al-Maliki's State of Law bloc won 89 seats in Iraq's 325 seat parliament compared with Allawi-led Iraqiya's 91 seats.

special report

Al-Maliki has a announced a union between his party and the Iraqi National Alliance, which finished third.

Together, this two party bloc will control 159 seats, just short of a parliamentary majority.

Allawi has warned that an alliance excluding his Iraqiya party, which has strong support from the minority Sunni community, could trigger renewed sectarian violence.

One candidate from the Iraqi National Alliance was not approved, as the court awaited information from the electoral commission surrounding his candidacy.

With the court's approval of election results, the president now has 15 days to call the new parliament to convene.

Final results approval important step in the right direction – U.S. embassy

June 1, 2010 - 02:53:42

BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq: The U.S. embassy in Baghdad welcomed on Tuesday the Federal Court’s decision to approve the final results of the parliamentary elections, considering it as an important step in the right direction.

“Tuesday’s court ruling is an important step in the right direction as Iraq undertakes what will be a historic and peaceful transition of power from one elected government to another,” the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad said in a statement received by Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“Now is the time for all political leaders to come together to put the interests of the Iraqi people foremost in their negotiations over the makeup of the new government,” it added.

Iraq’s Federal Supreme Court on Tuesday approved the final results of the country’s March 7 general election, with the exception of two winning candidates from the 325-member parliament.

In a televised ruling broadcast live from Baghdad, the head of the country’s Supreme Jurisdiction Council, Madhat al-Mahmoud, declared that the court “has officially ratified the final results of the elections.”

After months of delay, the ratification should help speed up the negotiations to form a new government.

Iraq's Supreme Court Ratifies Results Of Parliamentary Elections

Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki

June 01, 2010

Iraq's Supreme Court today ratified the results of the nation's March 7 parliamentary election, officially declaring the secular Al-Iraqiyah alliance of former Prime Minister Iyad Allawi as the biggest winner.

Confirmation of the results follows a court-ordered recount of all votes in Baghdad and the disqualification of candidates with ties to the outlawed Ba'ath Party of former ruler Saddam Hussein.

Today's ruling is seen as a major step toward resolving Iraq's election crisis and seating a new parliament. But the political impasse remains far from over, as it could take weeks for lawmakers to agree on a new government.

Under Iraq's election law, the largest coalition in parliament takes the lead in proposing the new administration.

The largest coalition appears to belong not to Al-Iraqiyah but to the second-place challenger and incumbent Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki.
