24/07/2011 20:52

Baghdad, July 24 (AKnews) - An Official in the Iraqi Interior Ministry said Sunday that one of the largest al-Qaeda cells that has carried out over a hundred armed actions has been arrested in Baghdad.

A director at the ministry, Brig. Ahmed Abu Raghif said in a press conference in Baghdad that the security forces "arrested a terrorist organization that was responsible for the assassinations carried out by silent guns and IEDs in Baghdad"

Assassinations by silent guns in Iraq had almost become a daily action in Iraq over the past few days which mainly targeted security personnel and government employees.

Head of Iraq Accountability and Justice Commission that was responsible for rooting our former Baath officials in the government office was assassinated by an al-Qaeda group in Baghdad.

The group that has been arrested by the security forces is constituted of 17 people all of whom have been arrested except one who "blew himself up while security farces were chasing him in Bab al-Muadham area in Baghdad"

The Interior ministry also screened the confessions of the 16 arrested insurgents who admitted to carrying out armed actions.

"The group have admitted to carrying out 100 assassination operations in Baghdad including the assassination of the Accountability and Justice Commission Ali al-Lami" said Abu Raghif in the conference.
