It was recently reported by the IMF that Iraq is growing faster than China. This is almost unbelievable, but believe it. As much news and attention China has received for its break neck growth, Iraq is also deserving of that press. It is a very unique time for Iraq as it is in the midst of reconstruction on a massive scale. It is almost as if Iraq is becoming a brand new country, a brand new country with huge oil reserves. In addition, foreign investors are jumping on early opportunities to seize contracts that will pay off years down the road.

Every day we hear of how much oil Iraq has and foreign contracts that are being signed. Yet, we still hear about how fragile Iraq is, both economically and politically. It is important to realize that while Iraq has done an incredible job attracting foreign investments, it’s going to take time – years – for these investments to be developed, maintained and eventually make profit. It is very important to keep this perspective. With that perspective comes patience. Iraq and its citizens must be patient with its government as it allocates its resources to projects that will improve Iraq. On the other hand, the government must act with urgency to protect and maintain this investments. Maliki cannot become complacent, there is too much at stake. Iraq must see all of its investments to the end and must not let things slip through the cracks.

It is exciting to imagine what Iraq will look like once its investments come into fruition. What will its sky line look like? What about the landscape? What about its political climate? At the rate Iraq is growing, in a handful of years, Iraq could be completely different. With a flourishing oil trade and construction projects booming, Iraq is in a great position to become a major global player. This is no secret. Iraq knows it and the world knows it. It seems to be only a matter of time when Iraq becomes a force that cannot be ignored. Until then, Iraqi citizens must be patient, but the government must act with urgency. Again, there is too much at stake.
