Britain places the Muslim Brotherhood at the top of the extremism list

Shafaq News / The British authorities placed the Muslim Brotherhood at the top of the list of extremist movements according to the standards of the new government definition of extremism, due to its direct connection to the Hamas movement and the Gaza war, and the anti-Semitic slogans revealed by the recent protests.

Local Communities Minister Michael Gove announced yesterday, Thursday, that "organizations such as the Muslim League in Britain, which is the British branch of the Muslim Brotherhood, and other groups such as (Cage and Mind) raise concerns about their trends."

He added: "We will hold these and other organizations accountable to assess whether they meet our definition of extremism, and we will take appropriate action."

He said, "The comprehensive spread of extremist ideologies is becoming more and more clear after the October 7 attacks and constitutes a real danger to the security of our citizens and our democracy."

The new definition of extremism is supposed to lead to the organizations in question being blacklisted and deprived of public funds.

The definition aims to combat what British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak described as a "poison" to democracy, warning of a "horrific increase in extremist unrest and criminality that threatens the country with a move to mob rule."

London defined extremism as “explicit or actual opposition to our basic values” such as mutual respect and tolerance, a definition that allowed the group to root its presence in Britain through various forms, including political activity that does not conflict with government directions, youth activities, and university organizations.

Britain already bans groups it says are involved in terrorism, and supporting or joining these organizations is a criminal offense, and Hamas is among 80 banned international organizations.

The groups that will be identified as extremist after a “rigorous” assessment over the next few weeks will not be subject to any action under criminal laws and will still be allowed to organize demonstrations, but the government will not provide them with any funding or any other form of treatment.
