2023-07-18 12:52

Shafaq News/ The Iraqi Council of Ministers announced, on Tuesday, new measures regarding the general amnesty law, which it intends to amend and send to parliament.

This came during the twenty-ninth regular session of the Council of Ministers, which was held under the chairmanship of the Prime Minister, Mr. Mohamed Shia Al-Sudani. A statement from Al-Sudani's office received by Shafaq News agency stated, "In accordance with the ministerial curriculum approved by the Parliament on October 27, and based on the political agreement document of the political forces that formed the government, which included a legal review of the general amnesty law, the cabinet decided to establish the legal department In the General Secretariat of the Council of Ministers, to prepare a draft of the draft amendment to the general amnesty law, by adopting the text that the House of Representatives voted on on the date referred to above, and which was mentioned in the aforementioned curriculum, within the legislative axis, paragraph (4), which came according to the following: Carrying out a legal review of the General Amnesty Law, with the aim of defining the crime of belonging to terrorist organizations; To include everyone who is proven to have (worked for terrorist organizations, recruited members for them, committed criminal acts, or helped in any way to carry out a terrorist act, or whose name was found in the records of terrorist organizations).

The general amnesty law is one of the most prominent demands of the Sunni blocs that stipulated its approval during the negotiations to form the state administration, which included the Shiite coordination framework and the Kurdish and Sunni blocs, which resulted in the formation of the new government headed by Muhammad Shia al-Sudani.

The government program includes, according to deputies from the Sunni component, the issuance of a general amnesty law, security checks in their governorates, and the abolition or suspension of bodies that were a source of concern and crisis for them.

Although more than 7 months have passed since the government's life, the general amnesty is still a matter of controversy between the Sunni and Shiite blocs, and no agreement has been reached on the categories covered by it yet.
