Jakarta, IDN Times - Two male Sumatran tigers inhabiting the Ragunan Wildlife Park, South Jakarta, have tested positive for COVID-19. This was known after the two of them underwent a PCR swab test on July 14, 2021.

This information was conveyed by the Governor of DKI Jakarta Anies Baswedan when he visited the two tigers, named Hari and Tino. "There is no choice, they must be isolated. It was decided to self-isolate at their place of residence," Anies wrote through his Instagram account @aniesbaswedan on Sunday (1/8/2021).

He told that Hari and Tino were said to have contracted COVID-19 because of the suspicion of the nurse in Ragunan who noticed that the two of them looked quite weak. Both also appeared to be sick and had flu-like symptoms and shortness of breath.

"TMR (Ragunan Wildlife Park) then summoned the bravest swab officers in the world to take swabs for Hari (12 years) and Tino (nine years old). Then, the samples were sent to the Biotechnology Laboratory belonging to the IPB Primate Animal Study Center, "said Anies.

"It turned out that the results of the PCR swab test showed Hari and Tino were positive for COVID-19," he said again.

Then, what is the condition of the two rare animals now? The condition of the two Sumatran tigers in Ragunan has recovered

Tiger in Ragunan Positive for Covid-19, Could it Be Infected From Humans?

Harimau Sumatera di Ragunan, Jakarta

Terkini.id, Makassar – Two Sumatran tigers at the Ragunan Wildlife Park in Jakarta were confirmed positive for Covid-19. This was announced directly by the Governor of DKI Jakarta Anies Baswedan, the two tigers named Hari and Tino have been infected with the corona virus since July 15.

"Two residents of DKI, Hari and Tino were exposed to COVID. No choice. They must be isolated. It was decided to self-isolate at his place of residence. The supply of food and medicine is sufficient during the isolation and healing process," said Anies, quoted from his writing on his official Facebook account, Sunday, August 1, 2021, as quoted by Suara.com.

Anies revealed that the two tigers had started showing symptoms like Covid-19 since three weeks ago. The animal nurse in Ragunan noticed that Hari and Tino had symptoms of Covid-19 flu, weakness, and shortness of breath. Both were immediately tested for swab and the results of the PCR test showed Hari and Tino were positive for Covid-19.
According to Anies, cases of animals infected with Covid-19, especially tigers and lions, are not unique.

“There have been many similar cases in other countries. Of course, caring for animals affected by Covid-19 is not the same as humans," he said.
Evidence that humans can transmit Covid-19 to animals continues to be researched. Recently, British scientists have found evidence that humans can transmit Covid-19 to pets, such as cats.

Researchers from the University of Glasgow looked at cats in the UK to identify two cases of animals contracting the coronavirus.

During the study, the two cats did not live in the same house and were of different breeds. Both developed mild to severe respiratory symptoms shortly after their owners also developed symptoms of the coronavirus.
Then, a cat was euthanized after his condition worsened. The results of an examination of the cat's lungs found damage due to viral pneumonia and infection with the Covid-19 corona virus.

Another 6-year-old Siamese cat also developed symptoms of the Covid-19 coronavirus, after its owner was declared infected. The cat only experienced mild symptoms of nasal discharge and conjunctivitis, then recovered.

The study, published in Vetenary Records, also supports existing evidence that humans can transmit new diseases to cats. A separate study also found that dogs can also catch the virus from their owners.

In addition, tigers and otters who are infected with the Covid-19 corona virus, may also be infected from their handlers at the zoo. While the researchers say animals don't play an important role in the study of the virus into humans, the study still attracts attention.

"The two cases of human-to-animal transmission of the coronavirus found in cats in the UK show how important it is to improve our understanding of COVID-19 infection," said Professor Margaret Hosie, from Glagow University.

According to the Center for Virus Research, currently animal-to-human transmission of the virus is a relatively low risk to public health in areas where human-to-human transmission of the virus is still high.

However, along with the decrease in cases of viral infection from humans, transmission between animals needs to be watched out for as a potential source of disease transmission.

I would not trust any thing about CV-19 testing. They tested new tests and they came up positive. They have tested all kinds of things and came up positive. They will say anything to push a narrative they want. It is a scare tactic. Until we get a person or persons in Washington that have a set and stop this nonsense we are stuck with the fear mongering.

IPB: Belum Ada Bukti Hewan Positif COVID-19 Tularkan Virus Corona ke Manusia

Suara.com - The Head of the Primate Animal Study Center (PSSP) of the Bogor Agricultural University, Huda Shalahudin Darusman, stated that there is no data and history of animals that are positive for COVID-19 that can transmit the virus to humans.

This was said by Huda in response to the news of two Sumatran tigers (Panthera tigris sumatrae) at the Ragunan Wildlife Park, Jakarta, which were confirmed positive for COVID-19.

"Animals can be infected with COVID-19, but whether they are infected or just contamination, it has not been confirmed until now. Moreover, if sick animals can transmit to humans, there is no data yet, so it can be said that they do not exist," said Huda Salahuddin Darusman in an interview privately. followed by virtual from Bogor, Monday (2/8/2021).

According to Huda Shalahudin, the public, especially officers at the Ragunan Wildlife Park, do not need to panic about finding animals exposed to COVID-19.

"The finding of animals exposed to COVID-19 in Ragunan is not the first time this has happened in the world, but no humans have been infected from animals," he said.

The lecturer of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, IPB, explained that he knew that two Sumatran tigers in the Ragunan Wildlife Park were exposed to COVID-19, after the Ragunan manager sent samples of the PCR swab test results to the PSSB IPB Laboratory, on July 15, 2021.

"After the laboratory test, the result was positive for COVID-19," he said.
Previously, the Head of the DKI Jakarta City Parks and Forest Service, Suzi Marsitawati, in a written statement on Sunday (1/8/2021), stated that two Sumatran tigers in Ragunan Wildlife Park, Jakarta, were reported to be infected with COVID-19. The two names are Tino (9 years old) and Hari (12 years old).

According to Suzi, Tino was initially found sick by showing clinical symptoms of shortness of breath, sneezing, mucus from the nose, and decreased appetite, on July 9, 2021. Two days later, Hari also experienced pain with the same symptoms as Tino.
On July 14, officers at the Ragunan Wildlife Park conducted a swab test on Tino and Hari.

"Then the samples were sent to the PSSP IPB Bogor laboratory. The results came out on July 15, which stated that the two animals were exposed to COVID-19," added Suzi.

Penyebab Dua Harimau Ragunan Positif Covid-19 Masih Misterius, TMR Tes Swab Pegawainya

Suara.com - The South Jakarta Ragunan Wildlife Park (TMR) is still trying to find out the origin of the exposure of Tino and Hari, two Sumatran tigers who were positive for Covid-19.

It is known, it is not known for certain why the two animals with the Latin Panthera Tigris Sumatrae could be infected with the virus from Wuhan, China.

"This is still our tracing, the source is still being traced," said Public Relations of Ragunan Wildlife Park (TMR) Bambang Wahyudi to reporters, Monday (2/8/2021).

According to Bambang, the officers who used to take care of Tino and Hari did not show any symptoms of Covid-19 or were sick. To ensure this, the officers who used to take care of Hari and Tino, aka the keeper and curator, underwent a swab test today.
"Today, swabs are also being carried out on officers who take care of them directly and also some curators who are often here," he said.

Bambang explained that all officers who care for animals at Ragunan Wildlife Park often do swab tests, and have even received a dose of Covid-19 vaccination. So, until this moment, continued Bambang, his party is still conducting searches related to the exposure of Hari and Tino.

"So we are still doing it from where, whether from officers or from other elements, this is still our tracing, we are still our search which has not yet been answered," said Bambang.
Furthermore, Hari and Tino began to experience changes in their health conditions. The two kings of the jungle are said to be getting better and their appetite is starting to increase

"What is clear is that the animals are starting to improve their health conditions have started to recover, so their appetite has started to come back," he said.
