President Trump orders all US troops out of Syria, declares victory over ISIS

The president declared victory over the Islamic State in Syria, "my only reason for being there during the Trump Presidency," he wrote.

WASHINGTON – Declaring victory over the Islamic State, President Donald Trump has ordered U.S troops in Syria be withdrawn from their posts, the White House said Wednesday.

The withdrawal of the more than 2,000 troops is based on Trump’s decision that the mission against ISIS is complete, a U.S. official, who was not authorized to speak publicly before it was announced by the White House, told USA TODAY.

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said Wednesday that the U.S. has "defeated the territorial caliphate."

"These victories over ISIS in Syria do not signal the end of the Global Coalition or its campaign," Sanders said in a statement. "We have started returning United States troops home as we transition to the next phase of this campaign.”

She did not offer details on the “next phase” of the campaign against ISIS in her statement.

In a tweet earlier on Wednesday morning, Trump also declared victory.

“We have defeated ISIS in Syria, my only reason for being there during the Trump Presidency,” he wrote.

Despite Trump’s claims that the war against the Islamic State has been won, fighting by U.S.-led forces continues there.

On Saturday, there were 47 airstrikes conducted by war planes against ISIS targets, U.S. Central Command announced early Wednesday.

The bombs struck 20 ISIS fighting units, destroyed petroleum tanks, a tunnel, vehicle and a mortar-firing position.

Further, according to a recent report by the Center for Strategic and International Studies, ISIS is far from obliterated. The Washington-based think tank estimates ISIS may still possess between 20,000 to 30,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.

As recently as last week, officials said U.S. troops may need a longer stay to ensure that the military's accomplishments are "enduring."

"I think it's fair to say Americans will remain on the ground after the physical defeat of the caliphate, until we have the pieces in place to ensure that that defeat is enduring," said Brett McGurk, Special Presidential Envoy for the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS.

Marine Gen. Joseph Dunford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, declined earlier in December to put a timeline on withdrawal of U.S. troops from Syria, suggesting they would be needed for some time to establish conditions for a long-term peace agreement.

"We still have a long way to go and so I'd be reluctant to give a fixed time," Dunford said during a forum held by the Washington Post.

The U.S.-led coalition has been fighting ISIS in the countries since 2014.

U.S. troops, mostly special operations units, have been training local security forces in eastern Syria.

In September, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis told reporters the U.S. forces also helped deter Iran from increasing its influence in the region. The U.S. goal has been to beat back ISIS enough to allow the United Nations to broker a peace plan to end years of fighting that have killed hundreds of thousands of civilians and created a humanitarian and refugee crisis.

“We want to support the Geneva process, the U.N.-mandated process,” Mattis said in September. “In that scope what we want to do is make certain that ISIS does not come back and upset everything again.”

Time for Trump to align with The Kurds.

Will it p.o. the Turks..?   You bet -- but they've had ample opportunity to go after these

radical muslims & haven't done it....

And ho'bummer is partly to blame for THAT, too.  <_<

Ho'bummer's "red lines in the sand" amount to about as much as the skid marks in his shorts.

He coddled his beloved radical muslim "J.V." team with kid gloves,

looked the other way when Iran sent their generals into Iraq empowering the terrorists,

kissed Maliki's azz as he stuffed his & his Iranian buddies' pockets,

and laughed & played golf whilst ignoring Benghazi.

Once again, no doubt at the urging of our cynical and gutless State Department, our American political leaders have betrayed our most loyal and effective ally in a battle nearly won, but not yet over.  This time it's the Kurds getting the mooky end of the stick as the Hmong, Montanards, Poles, Hungarians, and Czechs before them.

So Trump kisses the asses of the neo-radical wanna be Islamic terrorists now running Turkey into the ground who are so unreliable that they're being frozen out of some (should be ALL) NATO intel.  The Kurds got hosed neary 100 years ago when a couple of drunk worthless "amateur gentlemen diplomats" redrew the map of the Middle East one day over lunch after Woodrow Wilson bailed on the Versailles Treaty negotiations.  Read all about it in "Lawrence IN Arabia" NOT "Lawrence OF Arabia."

It's hard to believe that there is any country left in the world that would trust us with out idiot drive-by politicians, constant cynical disloyalty to our allies, and our willingness to put up with the worst sociopathic nihilists to maintain "stability."  If our post-WWII foreign policy wonks had been around in 1940, we'd be speaking German or Japanese now.  Better brush up on your Arabic and other languages of the Islamic psychopaths.

I don't believe Syria is that big of a card in the pile....removing 2000 boots not a big deal...what ever needs to be taken care of can be done by air....as for the Kurds and the rest of them...perhaps it sends a message....get your $hit together or you may lose our support.....The Kurds in Iraq have certainly had a hand In Iraq  not moving forward....(all 3 sects are corrupt)....the appearance here just might send a message to the Iraqi Kurds.......get your heads out of your camels butts....CL

Additionally we dont' need our young men over in Afgan guarding the Poppy fields....look for a pull out there as well during a huge inciditory event...."The Poppy's are Burning ".....that whole story would make for a good film...except for the loss of life involved......Nationalists....yes....Globalists.....no........JMO

Bravo, COORS:twothumbs:

But we hafta disagree about The Kurds.

As the Saudis become a bigger pimple on the butt of our ME 'Diplomacy' (which KILLary utterly DESTROYED),<_<

we'll have to align ourselves with viable allies in the region to be sure.

May as well opt for the lesser of the evils & support them against the Iranians, Chi-Coms, ASSad, Russians, et al...

At least The Kurds respect US & have helped US greatly in the past...

not to mention they're real badazzes on the battlefield, unlike so many others we try to help who just cower behind

our Troops & turn on US on a dime when they stand to gain at our expense.

And we agree... let the Bush Cabal & their Globalist s--thead pals babysit their own damn poppy fields !

‘Fox & Friends’ Trashes Trump Over Syrian Withdrawal: ‘Worse Than President Obama’

The Wrap Jon Levine,The Wrap 2 hours 46 minutes ago

The set of “Fox & Friends” spent a second day Thursday lacing into President Trump, with host Brian Kilmeade saying the president’s decision to pull U.S. forces out of Syria was worse than former president Barack Obama’s own foreign policy in the region.

“What happened last time when President Obama pulled out troops out after Iraq? What happened? We had to fight our way in and reestablish,” Kilmeade said. “He is doing exactly, if not worse, than President Obama did,” adding that Trump’s decision to pull out was comparable to Obama’s ultimately empty statement that Syrian use of chemical weapons would be a “red line” for his administration.

Trump made the announcement Wednesday, to the surprise of many, especially on Twitter. “We have defeated ISIS in Syria, my only reason for being there during the Trump Presidency,” he said.

Echoing the broad foreign policy consensus, Kilmeade said that a U.S. withdrawal from Syria would allow Russia and Iran to move into the region and present an untenable situation for our Kurdish allies. Also on hand was Fox News reporter Ed Henry, who did his best to provide counterpoint and pushed back on Kilmeade, noting how Trump had been tough on Iran in other ways.

“But you’re assuming that we’re handing Syria to Iran without noting as well that this president stood up to Iran and pulled out of the nuclear deal,” Henry said. “President Obama was handing them cash. Is that a better idea?”

“We’re doing the same thing,” Kilmeade shot back. “We are allowing them to reestablish themselves in a region.”

It was the second day in a row the show offered a stern finger wag to the president. On Wednesday, Kilmeade along with co-host Steve Doocy and Ainsley Earhardt, criticized Trump over his decision to back down on a demand that Congress fund the border wall with Mexico.

“What a stunning turn of events,” Doocy said. “If he agrees to the [continuing resolution] which would continue funding the government at the current levels … he loses and the Democrats will win everything they want.”

The folks over at Fox and Friends are pushing Donald hard to get him to change course.  We know he doesn't like to be manhandled....this is getting interesting.
