of Miss Iraq threat of killing because of "Bikini"

Miss Iraq's threat to kill for "bikini"

Twilight News

The family of Sarah Eidan, Miss Iraq, received death threats for appearing in swimsuits during the Miss Universe competition in the United States.

As a result of these threats, the official page of the Miss Universe contest on the Facebook social networking site scanned all the photos of Miss Iraq wearing "bikini" swimsuits so as not to endanger the lives of Sarah and her family at the hands of extremist groups.

Missouligy Egypt, the first Egyptian page on beauty contests across the Arab region, announced its full solidarity with Miss Iraq and her family on the backdrop of receiving death threats.

The Miss Iraq family belongs to the province of Babylon, and Sara has a great interest in being the first Iraqi Miss to participate in the Miss Universe contest after a 45-year hiatus.

Family of Miss Iraq forced to flee after she takes selfie with Miss Israel

Miss Universe contestant Sarah Idan has confirmed that her family has fled their home country of Iraq after a harmless selfie with Miss Israel led to repeated death threats.

Sarah Idan, who represented the war-torn country last month in Las Vegas, sat down with CNN to talk about the picture for the first time since its message of understanding set off a wave of social media attacks.

“Peace and Love from Miss Iraq and Miss Israel #missuniverse,” she posted on her Instagram account, adding heart emojis next to a picture of her with fellow contestant, Adar Gandelsman.

Idan, a 27-year-old who was her country’s first contestant in the pageant in 45 years, immediately began receiving backlash for the post from those criticizing the state of Israel, leading her to write a follow up post saying that the selfie was support for the Benjamin Netanyahu administration or a slight against Palestinians.

The aspiring singer, who also has U.S. citizenship and lives in Los Angeles, told CNN that the Iraqi organization that sent her to the pageant had threatened to strip her crown if she did not take the photo down.

She said that she refused to do so, but stayed quiet about the matter for weeks as her family left the country amid harassment and people recognizing them in the street.

“I was crying to my mom and felt like it's my fault they left, and she said, 'no, it's not your fault, we live in a f****d up society,” Idan told CNN.

The Miss Iraq Organization said that it did not issue the crown-stripping threat despite a “strong attack from the Iraqi street.”

Idan's confirmation comes after Israeli media reported her family's flight last week when Gandelsman recounted what had happened to her selfie partner.

Their picture came before tensions in the Middle East over Israeli-Palestinian relations became even more heated after President Trump’s announcement

Iraq was one of many Arab countries that came out against the move and said that it could have a destabilizing effect on the region.

Brava Miss Iraq!

Miss_Iraq_Miss_Israel-300x209.jpgBack on Nov. 17 November, we published on our Shmoos page an inspirational picture: Posing together for Instagram at the Miss Universe pageant in Togyo, Miss Iraq, Sarah Idan, posted: “Peace and Love from Miss Iraq and Miss Israel.”

The countries do not have diplomatic relations, so it was a courageous sign of desiring peace and coexistence, and for seeing people as individuals, beyond labels.

In return, Miss Israel, Adar Gandelsman, caption on Instagram called Idan “amazing.”

Fast forward to December and the family of Miss Iraq, has been forced to flee their country. How messed up is that?

As Idan makes clear, she posted the picture “to express hope and desire for peace between two countries,” not out of support for the Israeli government or callousness to Palestinians.

Gandelsman was spot on about Idan’s courage. Following the family’s expulsion, Idan tweeted:

I’m not the first nor the last person to face prosecution over a matter of personal freedom. Millions of Iraqi women live in fear. #freeiraqiwomen https://twitter.com/jewishnewsuk/status/941381388053467136

The story of her family’s forced expulsion is an excellent microcosm of the hatred of Israel that exists in the Middle East. When it comes to Israel, no nuance is allowed, no expression of a more positive future. It’s all intolerance all the time. And woe betide anyone who dares express a different view.

Sadly, this turn of events isn’t surprising to anyone who has studied the culture of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. If only all those in the UN currently denouncing President Donald Trump for his decision to acknowledge the obvious — that Jerusalem is and always will be the capital of Israel, even if the borders of that capital have to be defined — would spend just a moment trying to address the reality of the hatred that is fomented throughout the Middle East and Arab world against Israel, perhaps then peace and coexistence might have some kind of fighting champ.

Since that particular desire is pure fantasy, in the meantime, all we can say is Brava, Miss Iraq!

Miss Iraq 'disappointed' in Iraqi government after selfie blowback

Eric Levenson

Story highlights

  • Sarah Idan, Miss Iraq, took a selfie with Miss Israel in November
  • The countries' fraught histories caused a fierce blowback

(CNN)When Sarah Idan posted a selfie on Instagram with her new friend at the Miss Universe pageant, she certainly didn't expect to spark an international incident.

But because Idan, Miss Iraq, took the photo with Miss Israel, the photo set off a backlash from officials and online commenters that included death threats.
"When I posted the photo, I didn't really expect that it would create this much of a controversy," she said.
Speaking on CNN International on Thursday, Idan retraced the events of last month's Miss Universe pageant in Las Vegas. On November 13, she posed for a selfie with Miss Israel, Adar Gandelsman, during a pre-pageant photo shoot. Both contestants then posted photos of the encounter
"Peace and Love from Miss Iraq and Miss Israel," Idan wrote as the caption, adding several heart emojis.
The international selfie caused swift blowback due to the fraught relations between Iraq and Israel, which do not have formal diplomatic relations. Idan said she woke up to phone calls saying people were going crazy and making death threats online.
She was ordered to delete the photo by the Miss Iraq organization's director, but she refused to do so, she told CNN.
"I don't think I've done anything wrong," she said.

She did, however, post a second Instagram saying that she doesn't support the Israeli government or its policies in the Middle East, and she apologized for "anyone who thinks it's an attack for the Palestinian cause."
Idan, who has dual US and Iraq citizenship, said her family fled Iraq in the wake of the blowback.
She said she was "a little bit disappointed" in the Iraqi government because they have not said anything official about the incident and no one has reached out to her. "For me the whole thing is strange," she told CNN. "I was expecting like at least a statement from the government saying, OK we approve, or we don't approve, but I haven't heard anything yet."
In a statement to CNN, the Miss Iraq organization said that while the group was supportive of Idan, it didn't have the funding to provide for all her needs.
"In terms of the picture with Miss Israel, we (sic) got a strong attack from the Iraqi street but (sic) we did not say we would strip her title. We told her to clarify what happened," the organization said.
Idan said that statement was "false" and said the organization had threatened to take her title away. "The government has been scary quiet. And when they're this quiet, you don't know what waits for you at home," she said previously.

CNN's Yasmin Khorram contributed to this report.
