New York Magazine: How to Psychologically Fool Conservatives Into Accepting Global Warming

By P.J. Gladnick | October 2, 2014 | 10:53 AM EDT

New York magazine poses the problem of how to fool conservatives into buying the global warming beliefs. The answer provided by writer Jesse Singal is to psychologically manipulate them via long term "framing interventions."

If you think the tone of the article is dripping with condescension toward the "conservative yahoos" you would be right. One failed attempt at such obvious manipulation is to call it "climate change" instead of global warming since there has been no global warming for about the past 14 years. Of course, Singal himself has proved that he is not up to psychological manipulation speed since lately they have been calling it "climate disruption" since it was pointed out that climate always changes. Here is the author noting how conservatives were notably absent from the recent Peoples Climate March which was chock full of signs attacking capitalism and promoting socialism:

Time to put conservatives on the couch to analyze why they don't join the loony left in denouncing capitalism as the cause of global warm... uh, I mean climate change:

Last week’s People's Climate March drew 400,000 people onto the streets of Manhattan and a great deal of international attention to a subject of dire urgency. But some were skeptical about the event’s overall significance. “The march slogan was, ‘to change everything, we need everyone,’ which is telling, because it won’t change everything, because it didn’t include everyone,” wrote David Roberts of Grist. “Specifically, it won’t change American politics because it didn’t include conservatives.” True enough.

If there weren’t such a stark divide between American conservatives and almost everyone else on the question of the existence and importance of climate change — a divide that can approach 40 points on some polling questions — the political situation would be very different. So if any progress on climate change is going to be made through the American political system — apart from executive orders by Democratic presidents — it is going to have to somehow involve convincing a lot of conservatives that yes, climate change is a threat to civilization.

How do you do that? The answer has more to do with psychology than politics.

Got that? Conservatives are a bunch of uncaring yahoos so psychology must be used to manipulate them beyond their ignorance. And now we analyze those simpleton conservatives as lab rats:

In a larger context, social scientists have shown in laboratory settings that there are ways to discuss climate change that nudge conservatives toward recognizing the issue. Research is proceeding along a few different tracks. One of them involves moral foundations theory, a hot idea in political psychology that basically argues that people holding different political beliefs arrive at those beliefs because they have different moral values (even if there’s plenty of overlap). Liberals tend to be more moved by the idea of innocent people being harmed than conservatives, for example, while conservatives are more likely to react to notions of disgust (some of the conservative rhetoric over immigration reflects this difference).

As a result of the psychological experiments on the conservative lab rats, it was discovered that "framing interventions" are only effective if they are long term:

In a study they published in Psychological Science in 2013, Willer and a colleague, the Stanford social psychologist Matthew Feinberg, tested the effectiveness of framing environmental issues in a way that takes into account conservatives’ moral foundations. After completing a questionnaire that included items about their political beliefs, respondents were asked to read one of three excerpts...

Another promising route that researchers are exploring involves the concept of “system justification.” Put simply, system justification arises from the deep-seated psychological need for humans to feel like the broad systems they are a part of are working correctly.

Willer was realistic in describing the limitations of grafting language from moral foundations theory and system justification onto climate-change messages.
“It’s unlikely that such a short, small framing intervention would have a long, sustained effect — that’s very unlikely,”
said Willer. “The idea, we hope, is that application of these techniques in a longer-term more committed campaign would be effective and would stick.”

Of course, no input from the white coats on how to use "framing interventions" to cure those liberals, such as author Naomi Klein as well as at least half of the participants at the People's Climate March, of the notion that capitalism is the cause and socialism is the answer for global warming which morphed into climate change now revised to climate disruption.

Conservative lab rats, now that's a new one for me!!  Thanks for shedding even more light on the liberal/communist agenda for us WHN!!  :D Funny how the libs somehow think they can manipulate or minds, this of course would be making the huge assumption they are more intelligent then us conservative/tea party types, which of course couldn't be further from the truth!  Common sense can't be taught by the edjumicators in the dumbing down institutions all over the country called schools!!!

What we have here is a topic (climate change) that can't be won by the left scientifically, politically, morally or through honest debate so now they have to FOOL us "psychologically"!  HOODWINK us to be precise (it's a climate science industry term)!  Now THAT'S what I call a winning argument!  :twothumbs:

The article above did bring up an interesting point about the language used to rewrite their battle cry du jour, and try to influence and distract us.  "Global cooling, global warming, climate change" and now "climate DISRUPTION"!  What will it be called tomorrow?   :eyebrows:  I vote for "climate tumult"... has a nice ring to it!

Winning?!?!?! Are you freaking kidding me this thread is about you winning??? What is it exactly you have won?? You've violated every single rule of engagement you demanded from others, never once meeting the threshold you set..... You presented a significant body of scientists who disagree, which indeed should absolutely be considered in any intelligent attempt to find answers, …...yet you did so with clear evidence you had no concept of what you were reading, if you even read any of it, in incorrectly asserting the findings were fact, … which you in turn had to capitalize as if that somehow made your assertion more valid, ….. dismissed an opposing body of knowledge with one sentence as if you had the education, credentials or expertise to do so..... and did so without even a modicum of the very same consideration and open mindedness you threw down as a demand from anyone questioning your beliefs..... incessantly used capital letters to highlight your summary judgments as if that somehow made them valid, or real.... showed a complete lack of even remotely understanding free-market capitalism.... and incredulously with cute little dollar signs, stated the World Bank has a vested interest, ..... as if that were some kind of news flash, that a bank would have a vested interest...... constantly reflected the belief that only one side of the discussion has a financial interest in the outcome... or that only one side would attempt to manipulate people's beliefs …presented as fact one of the most uneducated etymologies of the word Hoodwink imaginable, referenced a survey driven psychology study commenting on the obvious,... as if it had world implication and then summarized that study by absolutely incorrectly noting it was about language absent even a faint hint that you have any knowledge understanding or command of syntactic deconstruction, linguistic analysis, or cognitive science, as requisite references to your claim. And then by self-proclamation you call that winning???? Seriously??

Hey I can't help but admire your passion, and that goes a long way...and if the whole point of this thread was about you winning, and you believe in your heart that you actually won something, then by all means celebrate. I wasn't engaged on that level, and am totally down with your self-proclamation as the winner of whatever it was you wanted to win. And I know it appears we don't have the same understanding of what it means to win,.. or that a winner was even going to be declared...... Indeed, true,  I was taken aback with the parameters, but I'm down with it now. We seemingly had very different reasons for being on this thread. Got it, I'm good with it...and...  Wouldn't it be cool if you actually got a toaster or juicer as the prize?

Well now that we have a proclaimed winner, no need to hang around...........thanks to those who gave  input, and info  for consideration.... :peace:

Well, let's see Rayzur, WHERE did I I say I'd WON anything?  It's a debate... can't really be settled here.  My point was that the believers CAN'T win this debate scientifically (because the data they present is faulty at best... can't win politically (since capitalism is NOT the cause and socialism/communism is certainly NOT the remedy)... and Morally because it is always wrong to take money from those who EARNED it to give to those who didn't (redistribution of wealth, global or otherwise).  If their argument is so WEAK (intellectually) that they have to employ psychological TRICKERY to FOOL the other side into believing their hogwash... THAT IS NOT A WINNING ARGUMENT. As a matter of fact, I believe I inferred (with a little good-natured humor) that the battle rages on... perhaps under a different moniker (climate tumult)!

If this thread is any indicator of the true understanding the believers have on the subject... it's evident to me that there isn't any.  They won't get the truth from the MSM, they won't get the truth from the government, and they certainly won't get the truth from the liberals.   I personally,  have won nothing more than the satisfaction of knowing this thread has had almost 1600 views (as of now) and hopefully given my fellow "deniers" and even those on the fence, a few facts to arm themselves with in future discussions (it's one thing to say " I don't believe in man made climate change" and another to be able to say "I don't believe... and here's why...").  I know we're never going to change the minds of those who worship at the alter of progressivism... but they should know who they're in bed with. That's it!

I know you are a very busy woman (I sincerely thank you for your service) and your input into this discussion has been... interesting. I suspect you have a lot on your brilliant mind as well as your plate. You just haven't been your usual laser-focused self.  That's okay... I always appreciate your contributions... even this one as it seems I've given the impression I think I've "won" the debate.  Not the case, I assure you.

I could use a new toaster though!

Great points, I and others obviously understand exactly where you are coming from.  The left is a bunch of BS'ers who cry all the way back to their little drug induced utopias when they don't get the reaction from the population they were hoping for, now they want to psychologically influence us?  More BS from the lib professors warping the minds of our youth!! Keep em coming!!  :twothumbs:

You just gotta love her.

Still taking lessons from both of you... Lol

:D   :D   :D

Really Maggie what was either one of their points?  Let's see if you have learned anything from your lessons, let's see you bring one, just ONE rational thought one way or the other and post it here (Ms I don't believe in global warming unless it suits me, but cheer my butt off when I THINK someone has some sort of a point in my favor) I thought you were washing your ca.................. hair?

And you believe it to be a one sided coin?

Yes, I do bro, no offense, but you don't hear us conservative/tea party types whining and moaning and trying to ram our beliefs down a bunch of liberals throats.  Actual data backs up the fact that the earth has been going thru cycles heating and cooling since long before we were ever on it, climatology is a bunch of BSer's trying to make a guess on what will happen next, damn bro they can't even tell us for certain if it will rain or not rain tomorrow, much less what will happen 10, 20 , 50 years from now.  But boy do they ever try and force us to believe their BS and lay on the guilt trips for anyone who doesn't buy in!  "Oh its for the children, you just don't love the children who will inherit this planet!"  They can drive their little liberal electric cars (which cost more to get rid of, and do more damage to the environment then a gas guzzler from their batteries) go with the sun and wind power till the cows come home, none of us are trying to stop them, what I'm sick of is them and their BS (scientific  totally fabricated facts trying to make everyone else out to be bad guys)  Seriously?  If they are really that concerned about it they should go to China, Russia, etc and protest there as they are the ones putting up 99% of the pollution.  Oh but wait that wont work then they won't be able to sell off the food stamps entitlement to eat but not work stamps and go get that cheap Chinese flatscreen from WalMart, so no they will just sit here and try to force businesses out of business and continue pushing jobs overseas because nobody here can compete, all in the name of the "Save the Bunnies Club".  :peace:

Any cognitive person (Whatshername, Rayzur), before ever presenting their case, is going to put in the effort necessary to prove their point.  Call it what you will, psychological warfare, for all I care........but it's a common sense practice.  And it's not limited to one side of the aisle.  To think that would be ludicrous.  You know me well enough by now to know I try and sneak my point across with as few of words as possible.....If I manage to make one person scratch their head to a possibility, then I've accomplished my mission.  No need to be long winded to be relevant.  As always, just my opinion.    :peace:   Now.... Call me out again.....and drinks will be on you at the golf course.   :eyebrows:

What we have here is a failure to communicate - LOL

As is so many topics I don't believe there is a clear cut winner...............for imo there are to many agendas on both sides.

I know, right?  Lol!  Nothing like waking up to a nice flaming!   :eyebrows:   My only agenda is to inform and debunk.  The agenda of the conservative argument is always to preserve freedom.  We don't want to control the left... we just want to be left alone.

WHN, thanks for your input.  I have to agree with you on the manipulation of words being used.  They'll use all means to influence ones purpose.

Thank you DC... speaking of words words words... does the word "hoodwink" have some alternative meaning I'm unaware of?  Lol!  I always thought it just meant to "dupe, trick. deceive".     Idk... I don't get out much!

You're right that they'll use all means to influence.  Have you seen this?  Fear mongering at it's best!  Never let a good crisis go to waste and all...

CBS Medical Contributor Wildly Blames Climate Change For Viral Outbreaks

By Matthew Balan | October 3, 2014 | 12:31 PM EDT

On Monday, Dr. David Agus injected the media's regular hype about climate change into CBS This Morning's coverage of the outbreak of Enterovirus D68 in the U.S. and the Ebola crisis in Africa. The morning show brought on Dr. Agus to discuss the polio-like virus that has afflicted children across the country. Near the end of the segment, anchor Charlie Rose wondered, "So we have Ebola virus in Africa, and we now have this virus [Enterovirus D68]. What's going on?"

The CBS medical contributor admitted that science didn't have any answers at this point, but that didn't stop him from wildly speculating: [MP3 audio available here; video below]

This isn't the first time CBS has injected the climate change issue into a human tragedy. On the July 16, 2014 edition of CBS Evening News, during a news brief about the 20 injuries from severe turbulence on an international flight, anchor Scott Pelley played up a study that indicated "this kind of turbulence will increase significantly in the future because of climate change." Five months earlier, CBS This Morning promoted a "controversial book" that predicted that "winter sports could be doomed" due to global warming.

DR. DAVID AGUS, USC PROFESSOR OF MEDICINE: Well, the world is flat – is that, you know, right now, anybody can get on a plane, and end up anywhere in this country and spread these viruses. And we have to be aware of it. We don't know exactly why there was a dramatic spread this year, but something is happening now. We have multiple viruses. And together with global climate change, things are changing in the virus world, and we have to pay attention.

Back in November 2013, Pelley hyped how "greenhouse gases, which influence climate change, have hit their highest level in 800,000 years," according to a U.N. climate change report. Correspondent John Blackstone touted the supposed apocalyptic nature of this report, and asked a scientist if it was "too late" to do anything about climate change.

Sorry... can't get the video to post.  See it here...

Ok, I finally have it figured out let me know if this is how the libs see it, I'm a bit slow today.

My car didn't start this morning (It's from climate change)

Dog is pregnant (It's from climate change)

Spilled my coffee on my lap thanks to the dumb @$$ speed bump in the McD's parking lot (Climate change of course)

Wife got her period (I hate you climate change!!)

May as well go fishing! (Hey thank goodness for climate change!!)  :eyebrows:

My back is stiff (must have slept on it wrong, oops nope it's gotta be because of climate change!)

and on and on and on and on!!!

Hey Doc, how about sticking to your field of practice, genius, and let the real scientists (BS'rs) cover climate change (aka weather).
