Warren Jeffs: Polygamist Leader Faces Possible Life Prison Term

SAN ANGELO, Texas — Polygamist leader Warren Jeffs recorded everything he said. Thousands of pages, written with Biblical flourish, about God wanting him to take 12-year-old wives. About those girls needing to sexually please him. About men he banished for not building his temple fast enough.

Facing his last chance to keep his freedom, Jeffs didn't say a word.

He was sentenced to life in prison Tuesday for sexually assaulting one of his child brides – among 24 underage wives prosecutors said Jeffs collected – and received the maximum 20-year punishment on a separate child sex conviction. Jeffs, 55, will not be eligible for parole until he is at least 100 years old.

The head of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints made no plea for leniency. He ordered his attorneys not to call witnesses during the sentencing phase, and forbade them from making a closing argument Tuesday.

Less than half an hour later, jurors returned with the harshest punishment possible.

"He's a pervert, and the crazy thing is, he perverted his own religion," his sister, Elaine Jeffs, said after the sentencing. Nearby, police escorted her brother into a waiting patrol car.

Elaine Jeffs, who left the FLDS in 1984, watched the end to an often bizarre and graphic two-week trial. Other onlookers included one of Jeffs' top lieutenants and state caseworkers who rounded up nearly 400 children during a 2008 raid at the sect's Texas ranch. There were a handful of spectators as well, including a retired couple who also sat in on the Casey Anthony trial in Florida.

Despite the convictions and life sentence, Jeffs remains in control of the FLDS and its roughly 10,000 followers. His most devoted consider him God's spokesman on earth and a prophet, but his followers were absent in court for the bulk of the trial.

Jeffs sometimes was, too. He boycotted the sentencing phase, remaining in a courthouse holding cell, and refused to answer state District Judge Barbara Walther when directly questioned Tuesday. Jeffs had represented himself during the conviction phase, and often interrupted court proceedings by contending that he was being persecuted for his religious beliefs.

Jurors ignored reporters after the sentencing, quickly walking to their cars that were parked single-file in a blocked-off street and driving away.

Willie Jessop, a former FLDS spokesman who railed against Texas authorities following the raid but has since disavowed Jeffs, said the heinousness of the charges has left a fractured FLDS community. He said his first goal would be tearing down the guard tower and gates at the Yearning for Zion ranch, which authorities stormed in 2008 and where they collected a trove of evidence against Jeffs.

That included photos of him kissing the young brides he took in "spiritual marriages" and scratchy audiotapes of him giving girls explicit instructions for sex. His journals speak of casting out men for not being humble, written around the same time Jeffs was photographed in a leather jacket atop a Harley Davidson motorcycle.

"Everyone in the church has got to take a responsibility for what has taken place," Jessop said. "In order for this to be fixed going forward, we have to take responsibility. This is a crisis for every single member in the church."

Jeffs rose to power in 2002 following his father's death, and has run the church despite being in police custody in either Arizona or Texas since 2006.

He'll be more restricted in whatever Texas prison he ends up in. Jeffs was flown to a prison intake across the state hours after being sentenced. It's there that prison officials will decide where he will serve his sentence and whether to assign him to the general prison population, safekeeping or protective custody. His telephone calls will be limited to a list of 10 people, and Jeffs will be prohibited from receiving any visitors under age 17.

Jeffs stood quietly Tuesday as the sentence was read. He must serve at least 45 years in prison: at least 35 years of a life sentence on one of the child sex charges, and at least 10 years on the other.

During the trial, prosecutors used DNA evidence to show Jeffs fathered a child with a 15-year-old girl and played an audio recording of what they said was him sexually assaulting a 12-year-old.

"If the world knew what I was doing, they would hang me from the highest tree," Jeffs wrote in 2005, according to one of his journals.

Nichols referred to that passage in his closing Tuesday.

"No, Mr. Jeffs, unlike what you wrote in your priesthood records ... we don't hang convicts anymore from the highest tree. Not even child molesters," Nichols said.

Jeffs spent years crisscrossing the country as a fugitive who eventually made the FBI's Ten Most Wanted list before his capture in 2006. Former church members testified that Jeffs ruled with a heavy and abusive hand, and excommunicated 60 church members he saw as a threat to his leadership.

Among Jeffs' most eccentric orders was banning the color red. Rebecca Musser, a former FLDS member who was once a wife of Jeffs' father, showed up to the sentencing in a deep red dress.

Prosecutors suggested that the polygamist leader told the girls they needed to have sex with him – in what Jeffs called "heavenly" or "celestial" sessions – in order to atone for sins in his community. Several times in his journals, Jeffs wrote of God telling him to take more and more young girls as brides "who can be worked with and easily taught."

When police raided the group's ranch, they found women dressed in frontier-style dresses and hairdos from the 19th century as well as underage girls who were clearly pregnant. The call that spurred the raid turned out to be a hoax, and hundreds of children were returned to their families.

Jeffs is the eighth FLDS man convicted since the raid. Previous sentences ranged from six to 75 years in prison.

Bill O'Reilly has mentioned the situation with Warren Jeffs on Fox News. He has told the states to get their law enforcment act together and go into those compounds to look around and watch what is going on. So far the only governor to take a stand on the abuses of women & children in those compounds is the Gov from Texas. These compounds are in every state. Why are the other govenors not taking any interest in this illegal activity.

I also have noticed that some of you so-called conservative on this site think that if you lean toward the left, you must not have served this country. I served this country in the military and was transformed into a sheeple at the end of basic training. I was trained to think one-way and never outside of the box. This was kinda like being a member of the BORG ( Star Trek-Next Generation series). While in the military I was told what every little move to make, what and how to think. I spent four years fighting for the rights of others outside of the military- but my rights were somewhat deminished by me signing over my life to Uncle Sam.

Tell me this, how many civilians would work 16-20 hr shifts on a wims notice without say about it or being paid overtime? Now, as an enlisted person E-1-5, you ain't making no money in the first place let alone working extensive hours without getting paid overtime. How is it that when I was in Iraq, I escorted civilian contractors outside of the green -zone as an E-5 making about 30-35k a year and the cilivilian contractor driving a water truck make 120K a year driving a water truck. An E-4 buddy of my was driving the same water truck for 25-30k a year! why in the heck is that? hmm......I smell capitalism! So after two tours in Iraq, I jumped ship and decided to restore my rights that I have fought to have and earned.

Conservatives are very liberal when it come to finacnial breaks and perks in their benefit, but very conservative when they have to come out of pocket for those whom they deem less than themselves- yeah I said it!

I am suprised that our faithful news report poster like rtrusty, delta22, trooper,Krome, divemaster5734 and others who ride the conservative band wagon have not one word to say about Warren Jeffs and his polygamist groups around this country. Ok, Obama has caused financial problems so you say, but I guess a man like Jeffs having sex with under-age kids is ok and not worthy to talk about or even mention. Now, I don't want to asume that this Warren Jeffs person was teaching these kids a conservative life lesson on his segregated compounds where these crimes happened daily. But hey, what do I know- maybe my liberal mindset allows me to think outside the box and hope to give a child a choice as to how they should explore their sexuality at the right lawful age. The sad truth is, is that the conservative majority in this country seems to condone this criminal activity- it still exists just as well as hatred and bigotry is alive and well. Yeah he just got convicted, but he is still running his group and our government is not raiding these compounds like they do crack houses in the poor neighborhoods. Drug dealers don't force children to buy drugs, but these polygamists groups force children into pornography and under-age sex.

Warren Jeffs and polygamist sects in this country have been profiled on CNN, HLN and all of the so-called liberal media- but not on Fox and friends. Sexual predators of children are some of the vilest people on the planet who cause more harm than a credit rating getting lowered. Experts say that this type of activity grows like a plague and has caused so many of these victims to become predators themselves. Warren Jeffs and his group preach separatist views as a badge of honor. Warren Jeffs had over five wives. Most of them he raped before the age of 18.

Lastly, as we all search to find a way to fix our credit rating or whom to blame. Let's not forget about the thousands of innocent young children who have fallen victim to these groups and vote someone in office who is willing to combat these groups who act no differently than some Islamic radicals.

Warren Jeffs and his supporters must be brought to justice!

Well, since you seem to be drawing a line in the sand and putting conservatives on the side with polygamists and pornographers and child abusers I guess I'm within my constitutional rights to tell you to get your head out of your a** and see what's really happening in this world. Left to our own we can fix people who abuse children and make merchandise out of them! Permanently fix them! Its liberals who want to lock this kind of person up and "study" them for 40 years to find out how they were obviously mistreated in their adolescense. Crap! Cut their nuts out and hang them at dawn! How your sick mind ever came to associate conservatism with Warren Jeffs is beyond me! Go on back to your government-subsidized house and collect your milk and cheese and read some more Obummer stories to incite you to hate conservatives who would put your butt to work in the real world and maybe, just maybe you would begin to see that is indeed Mr. Obummer and people of his mindset who are raping America. And when his real agenda comes forth and he is set up as a dictator here and kept in office by his government-subsidized goon squads who live for "charity" and who are willing to "legally" steal what we have worked for and redistribute it to the "less fortunate" who have learned to live off a system of government hand outs...then you might wish there were a few conservatives with enough back bone to say not to the ignorance that is inbred through these government programs!
