Baghdad, April 2 (AKnews) – The political blocs in the Iraqi parliament have finally agreed on candidates for two key government positions, the ministries of the interior and planning, after months of disputes.

The new Iraqi cabinet was sworn in December incompletely due to disputes over the security-related ministries. According to the political agreements, the Iraqiya list had the right to hold the Defense Ministry, while the National Coalition (NC) led by Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki will hold the Ministries of the Interior and National Security.

“The political blocs have resolved their positions about a vote on the candidates for the planning ministry and the interior ministry whom Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki submitted to the parliament (last week),” said Amir al-Kinani and Iraqi parliament in the NC bloc led by Maliki.

Maliki submitted last week to the Iraqi parliament the résumés of Ibrahim Mohammed al-Lami, Khalid Motab al-Obeidi and Ali Yousef Abd al-Nabi for the portfolios of the Interior, Defense and Planning respectively.

But al-Obeidi, a candidate from the al-Iraqiya list, seems to not have gained the support of the political blocs for the position of the Defense Minister. Al-Iraqiya list now has to put forward another candidate to the PM.

The only problem hampering the vote on the candidates, according to Kinani, is the defense ministry candidate whose candidacy was withdrawn by the al-Iraqiya list – which has the right to hold the ministerial portfolio as a result of a power-sharing deal between the blocs.

The political blocs are now waiting for the al-Iraqiya to resolves its position by either retaining al-Obeidi or put forward another in his place.

TJ, does this mean only the Ministry of Defense is left to agree upon?

They still have to vote on these two positions but at this point that would appear to be only a formality. The nominations have been accepted by all blocs which has been a huge obstacle until now.

So defense would be the last position to fill......two down one to go, another town and one more show!!!!
