Maliki to sign Kurdish demands in two days

Erbil, Dec.8 (AKnews)- A Kurdish deputy said Wednesday the Prime Minister designate Nouri al-Maliki will sign the Kurdish demands paper in the two coming days, adding new points have been added to the paper.

Speaking to AKnews, Arif Tayfur from the Kurdistan Blocs Coalition (KBC) said the leader of the State of Law Coalition (SLC) will sign the 19-points paper.

He added the SLC has also added six demands to the paper, however, he did not allude to any of them.

In their government coalition talks Kurds demanded the parties to comply with the Iraqi constitution for settling the disputes over tenure of some multiethnic provinces. Kurds further stipulated assuming senior posts. They also urged the players to solve issues related to legality of Kurdistan oil contracts, the status of Kurdistan armed forces (peshmarga) and their budget, the general budget of Kurdistan and a number of other suspended issues.

More or less the parties agreed to the Kurdish paper but only “verbally”. The SLC members in different occasions stressed their bloc agreed to all terms except one.

Tayfur, who is also elected as the deputy Iraqi parliament speaker, said the SLC objected to the term that calls for disbanding government upon the KBC’s withdrawal due to “constitutional violations” and “evading from the new cabinet agenda.”

That term was amended, Tafur said. It was proposed to from a committee to investigate the violations, and should the committee fail to solve the issue, it will be raised to the Federal Court. In case the court also was not successful in convincing the parties, the KBC will withdraw from the government, the Kurdish deputy explained.

The last paragraph is the one that worries me most ...

If the KBC pulled out of the government then Iraq would surely fall into civil war. Let's hope that Maliki fully understands ( and I'm sure he does ) what is truly at stake if he ignores his obligations to the other blocs. As always with Iraq, we will know in " a week or so ."
