Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The Governor of the Saudi Eastern Province, Prince Saud bin Nayef bin Abdulaziz, inaugurated a platform for the GCC electrical interconnection project with Iraq at the headquarters of the GCC Interconnection Authority in the Saudi city of Dammam.

 

Prince Abdulaziz stressed that the electrical interconnection project between the GCC countries aims to preserve energy and enhance integration between countries in the Gulf region.

The platform will increase the efficiency of the electrical interconnection between the GCC countries and Iraq.

 

The platform enables Iraq to exchange electrical energy with the countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council collectively or separately, which will give wide flexibility to the exchange and trade of energy between Iraq and the GCC countries.

 

The GCC Interconnection Authority expected that the project would provide Iraq with two million megawatts during the summer months, whereas energy exchange with Iraq in the winter months would reach 500,000 megawatts.

 

The value of the electrical energy Iraq will use through the interconnection project with the GCC countries is expected to range between $200 and $300 million annually.

He added that this connection came at the right time, as “the electricity crisis that Iraq has been suffering from for years, especially in the summer, places great burdens on the Iraqi citizen in light of the lack of a national electricity system, and to get rid of dependence on Iranian electricity that is sold at high prices to Iraq, as well as “For not fulfilling obligations to Iraq, which is costing Iraq huge losses,” he said.

Al-Halbousi pointed out that “Iraq is being subjected to blackmail through electricity, through which Iran is pressuring Iraq in order to mediate with the American side in order to allow the release of parts of the financial amounts in dollars to Iran, which has made Iraq a victim of the American-Iranian conflict,” he said. .

Al-Halbousi stressed, “The Iraqi government must exploit the resources that Iraq possesses in order to establish national electricity, and Iraq has all the capabilities to achieve self-sufficiency and even export, but what is lacking from the Iraqi government is the will and hard work to establish a national electricity system that will save Iraq the costs.” He pays for importing electricity from neighboring countries.”

The Ministry of Electricity announced today, Saturday, that its plan for the winter season has entered into force, while confirming the launch of a comprehensive maintenance plan consisting of 5 axes.

Ministry of Electricity spokesman Ahmed Moussa said, “After the success of the summer 2023 plan and its successful completion, we reached production rates of 24 thousand megawatts, as there was a clear and tangible improvement as a result of the rapid plan we worked on.” 

He added, "The Minister of Electricity, Ziad Ali Fadel, instructed a comprehensive maintenance plan for all operating obstetric units, and their entry into an intensive and comprehensive maintenance program for all parts of the units and production stations to prepare for the upcoming winter and summer seasons."

He pointed out, "The intensive and comprehensive maintenance program and plan for the obstetric units includes 4 axes, including addressing bottlenecks, establishing transmission lines, installing fixed and mobile conversion stations, and addressing low voltages, including expanding transmission networks and installing power transformers (Auto-E) in all conversion stations."

He pointed out that "the Ministry's plan will be comprehensive based on an investigation into all energy transmission networks in Iraq, and there will be complete campaigns to wash lines, stations and insulators to treat expansions, in addition to rehabilitating line paths, rehabilitating feeder paths, completing secondary fixed and mobile stations, rehabilitating distribution networks, treating beams, and taking care." To grant exceptions for heavy water and rainwater drainage stations,” he explained, “The plan was launched last Sunday and the ministry’s staff actually started the plan.”
