Shafaq News/ On Sunday, the Iraqi General Company for Railways signed a memorandum of understanding with its Iranian counterpart on executive procedures for the railway link between the two countries.

 

The memorandum of understanding was signed at the Iranian Consulate in Basra Governorate, by the Director General of the Iraqi Railways Company and the Executive Director of the Iranian Railways Company.

 

During the tour, the officials of the two countries inspected the border area of the project according to the maps approved between the two sides, which included the Shalamcheh border area in southwestern Iran, the new passenger station there and the path under study from this border to the Arvand River from the Iranian side and the two banks of the aforementioned river and its central part is "Sinbad Island". In Iraq, specifically the construction site of the bridge, in addition to the construction site of a new passenger station in Basra.

 

The two sides agreed, after negotiations that lasted 6 hours, to determine the exact path for the passage of the railway line from Shalamcheh to the Arvand River, and to set a specific timetable for the operational operations of the railway link between Shalamcheh and Basra, including scheduling mine-clearance operations and the construction of railway infrastructure from Shalamcheh to Arvand (Shatt al-Arab in the Iraqi side), and handing over the land to conduct studies on the foundations of the bridge that will connect the two banks of the river.

 

The technical affairs assistants of the Iraqi and Iranian railways also signed the railway track map attached to the memorandum of understanding, the operational procedures for linking the two countries.

Shafaq News/ The semi-official Iranian news agency "Mehr" announced, on Sunday, that Iran and Iraq have signed a memorandum of understanding regarding operational procedures for the Shalamcheh-Basra railway project.

 

This came, quoting the Ministry of Roads and Urban Development, during the visit of the Director General and the technical team of Iran Railways, in the presence of managers and senior officials of the Iranian and Iraqi Railways Company and political officials at the Iranian Consulate in Basra.

 

The agency stated that the memorandum was concluded in line with the understanding between the ministers of roads, urban development and transportation in the two countries, after a joint meeting was held with the technical and political teams of the two parties on the Shalamcheh border, the executive heads of the Iranian and Iraqi railways inspected the latest developments in the Shalamcheh-Basra railway project.
