{Economic: Al Furat News} The International Monetary Fund ruled out the possibility of a global recession, despite the worsening financial conditions and the slowdown in China's economy.

International Monetary Fund Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva said on Monday that the financial crisis, the dollar's rise and the slowdown in China's economy are all factors affecting the global economy, but the IMF does not expect a global recession.

"All these factors make rating downgrades a possibility, and for some countries there is an increased risk of recession, but we do not expect a global recession," Georgieva said in a televised interview.

"As policymakers and business owners head to Davos, the global economy is likely to face its biggest test since World War II," the Managing Director of the IMF wrote in a blog shared with IMF officials.

After a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the world's political and economic elites are returning to personally attend the World Economic Forum as attention is focused on the repercussions of the war in Ukraine.

International Monetary Fund officials stressed the "growing risk of geo-economic fragmentation," stressing in turn the benefits of globalization.

In their blog, IMF officials noted the change in the flow of capital, goods and services over the past three decades, driven by the spread of modern technology, adding: "These forces of integration have boosted living standards and productivity, tripled the size of the global economy and lifted 1.3 billion people out of extreme poverty." .

 However, this progress is threatened today by the war in Ukraine and the accompanying sanctions and restrictions, as restrictions were imposed on the trade of food, energy and other raw materials in about 30 countries, according to the fund.

Reducing trade barriers would help ease supply shortages and lower prices for food and other products.

The International Monetary Fund advised countries and companies to diversify their imports to ensure the flow of supplies and "take advantage of the benefits of global integration of companies."

How often is the special drawing rights SDRs exchange rate calculated?

Every five years

Every five years the IMF determines which five currencies will enter the basket, and which weight will be applied to each currency. The exchange rates used by the IMF to calculate the official SDR are the noon rates in the London foreign exchange market.

 

 

 

The next adjustment was meant to take place in 2020 but has been moved to 31 July 2022 (IMF 2021h).

 

Once an SDR allocation has been carried out, interest payments are received on SDR holdings (assets) and paid on the SDR allocation (liabilities) at the same rate of interest. Mar 9, 2022

Summary:

This paper seeks Executive Board approval of an amendment to Rule O-1 of the IMF’s Rules and Regulations, which specifies the currency amounts in the SDR valuation basket In accordance with Decision No. 17247-(22/44), adopted May 11, 2022, on the method of valuation of the SDR and Decision No. 16033-(16/17), adopted July 20, 2016 on the guidelines for the calculation of currency amounts in the SDR valuation basket, the amounts of each currency included in the SDR valuation basket, effective August 1, 2022, have been determined. These currency amounts are calculated in accordance with long-standing principles of continuity and stability of the SDR value in terms of currencies. The calculations ensure that on the transition day (today), the value of the SDR in U.S. dollars is the same under the new and the prevailing SDR valuation baskets. Moreover, at the average exchange rates for the three-month period ending today (May 2 through July 29, 2022), the share of each currency in the value of the SDR corresponds to the weight approved by the IMF Executive Board on May 11, 2022.

Press Release – IMF Determines New Currency Amounts for the SDR Valuation Basket

• The IMF Executive Board approved today new amounts for the five currencies that will determine the value of the Special Drawing Right (SDR) from August 1 onward for a five-year period.
• This completes the final step in implementing the results of the latest review of the method of valuation of the SDR.

Washington, DC: Today, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) announced the new amounts for the five currencies that will determine the value of the SDR during the new valuation period that runs from August 1, 2022 until July 31, 2027.

The Executive Board has decided that, effective August 1, 2022, the value of the SDR will be the sum of the values of the following amounts of each currency: [1]

Japanese yen	13.452

Today’s Board’s decision on the amount of each currency in the SDR valuation basket is the final step implementing the results of the latest review of the method of valuation of the SDR, concluded on May 11, 2022. At that review, the IMF determined that the composition of the SDR basket and the weights assigned to each currency in the basket will be 43.38 percent for the U.S. dollar, 29.31 percent for the euro, 12.28 percent for the Chinese renminbi, 7.59 percent for the Japanese yen, and 7.44 percent for the pound sterling ( See Press Release No. 22/153).

The SDR interest rate that will be determined on August 5 and applied for the week of August 8, 2022 will be the first one that reflects the new SDR valuation basket. It will be based on the exchange rates and interest rates that will prevail at the time of its determination, and the above currency amounts. The change in the SDR interest rate relative to the previous week will reflect the changes in the shares of currencies in the SDR valuation basket, as well as the changes in the interest rates on each financial instrument in the interest rate basket.
