What is the relationship of the ax and the fire torch?

Celebrated by about 300 million people around the world .. the Kurdish version of the origin of "Newroz"

2022.03.19 - 16:41
Celebrated by about 300 million people around the world .. the Kurdish version of the origin of "Newroz"

Baghdad - people

The Kurdistan region and other cities are witnessing preparations before the date of March 21 of each year, to celebrate Nowruz holidays, which are interspersed with official ceremonies and rituals drawn over generations , in addition to other peoples celebrating this day with rituals that may not differ much from those conducted by the Kurdistan region, so what is the story of this Eid?.

Nowruz, or “New Day”, is an occasion created by the environment since its legendary ages in the countries of the East. It is celebrated by several peoples, starting with Kyrgyzstan and Mongolia, extending to the Mediterranean, and about 300 million people celebrate it, according to “UNESCO”.

Nowruz is associated with the beginning of the natural calendar and the astronomical end of winter on the 21st of March, marking the arrival of the vernal equinox, equating day and night, and the revival of nature. People celebrate Nowruz under various titles such as “Tree Day” and “Mother’s Day.”

The story of Nowruz

The Kurdish novel of "Newroz" revolves around the character of an unjust king named "Dahhak", contrasted with the character of "Kawa al-Haddad", the rebellious rising in his face, as "the latter rose up against the tyrant king, Dahhak, and killed him with his ax in a moment of heedlessness when he entered it and set fire to the mountains as a declaration of victory." .

In the details, the Kurdish legend says that one of the Kurdish kings was known for his unjustness and desecration of the blood of young people in order to recover from a malignant disease that afflicted him, and the day of liberation from his oppression coincides with the day of the spring equinox.

According to this legend, a group of brave men led by "Kawa al-Haddad" overthrew his rule, after which they lit the mountains with torches to celebrate victory and get rid of tyranny and enslavement. That day was a national holiday called Nowruz.

The Kurdish poet "Bire Merd" is the first to immortalize the Kurdish epic of Nowruz at the beginning of the twentieth century in Sulaymaniyah, by holding folklore festivals for it on the hill of "Mamma Yara" every year.

Nowruz faces Islamic reservations as it is a holiday that contradicts Islamic concepts, as well as differences over the accuracy of ancient mythological accounts.

Nowruz falls on the first day of the year according to the Persian solar calendar, as well as the first day of the Kurdish year in the local calendar.

UNESCO had included Nowruz in the Model List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, and recognized March 21 as the International Nowruz Day. Intangible cultural heritage is the practices, perceptions, expressions, knowledge, skills and associated instruments, objects, artefacts and cultural places that communities, groups and sometimes individuals consider part of their ancestral cultural heritage.

Nowruz is one of the most prominent holidays of Persian nationalism and is celebrated in Iran, Afghanistan, Turkey, Iraq and Syria.

The celebration of this holiday dates back to more than 2000 years, and this holiday still maintains its great position among the peoples who are looking forward to it from the regions of Central, Minor and Western Asia, and in the northern regions of Iraq, including the Kurdistan Region.

If we delve into the roots of the word Nowruz, we find a diversity of references, but all of them emphasize one concept, which is the "new day".

According to the Persian language, "no" means new and "rose" means day, thus the meaning is "new day", and it is indeed the same for the first day of each new year's cycle, which is the day of "transformation" as it was called earlier.
