Tehran is pressing for US forces to leave Iraq (Zayd al-Obeidi/AFP)

Since the dawn of Thursday, the Iraqi authorities have lifted their security measures in the capital, Baghdad, as well as in the governorates of Salah al-Din and Anbar, where the two air bases of "Balad" are located near Tikrit and "Ain al-Assad", two of the most prominent military sites that include American forces in the country This follows an attack, the largest of its kind, carried out on Wednesday evening (the day before yesterday) by armed militias against US interests in Iraq. The attack was carried out by Katyusha rockets and drones, which flew simultaneously towards the "Victoria" base, which is adjacent to Baghdad Airport, west of the capital, and the "Balad" base.

The two attacks come less than 8 hours after the Iranian Quds Force commander Ismail Qaani visited Baghdad and met Iraqi officials, including Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi. Qaani also met with armed militia leaders, including the leader of the "Popular Mobilization" Abdul Aziz al-Muhammadawi, nicknamed "Abu Fadak", who emerged after the United States' assassination of the former commander of the "Quds Force" Qassem Soleimani and the leader of the "Popular Mobilization" Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis. Last year, in Baghdad, he assumed the position held by Al-Muhandis, chief of staff of the Popular Mobilization Forces.

Information about an imminent attack on the "Ain al-Assad" base, similar to the attacks on the bases of "Balad and "Victoria"

According to military data issued by Baghdad, an attack with three Katyusha missiles targeting the "Balad" air base in Salah al-Din Governorate (80 km north of Baghdad), fell inside the base without causing any human or material losses, followed by about 50 minutes of another attack on The "Victoria" base, adjacent to Baghdad International Airport, west of the capital, was fired by a Katyusha missile, followed by the targeting of the base by three booby-trapped drones. The spokesman for the "international coalition", Colonel Wayne Maroto, commented yesterday via "Twitter" on the new attacks, warning that "the attack against the Baghdad government, the Kurdistan region, and the international coalition will undermine the authority of Iraqi national institutions and sovereignty."

A security source in Baghdad confirmed to Al-Araby Al-Jadeed that the attack on the Balad base did not result in casualties, but one of the missiles hit a communications tower belonging to the Iraqi Air Force, causing damage to it, while material losses were actually recorded in the attack that targeted the base. "Victoria". This base is a small camp that contains a helipad and a headquarters for a special US mission unit as part of the efforts of the "international coalition" in the war on terrorism led by Washington. According to the source, the attack, which was carried out by three booby-trapped drones, was launched from the Jihad neighborhood near the Baghdad airport site, and one of them was shot down by the American army, while two of them fell and exploded inside the base, one of them on a metal roof in one of the halls designated for gathering soldiers. The source explained that the attack on the "Balad" base was carried out from a nearby area controlled by the "42nd Brigade" of the "Asa'ib Ahl al-Haq" militia.

Following the attacks, the Iraqi authorities began a wide deployment process in the central and western areas of Baghdad, as well as areas surrounding the bases of "Balad" and "Ain al-Assad", in Salah al-Din and Anbar, north and west of the country. Military units were seen deployed in various areas around the two bases, as well as the vicinity of Baghdad International Airport. He also monitored throughout the day yesterday the flight of US drones at low altitude over the Green Zone in central Baghdad. The leader of the "tribal mobilization" forces in Anbar, Muhammad al-Jughaifi, told "Al-Araby Al-Jadeed" that the measures included, for the first time, helicopters that combed large areas extending up to 40 kilometers from the vicinity of the "Ain al-Assad" base in anticipation of new attacks. He added that there is information about an imminent attack on "Ain al-Assad", similar to the attacks on the bases of "Balad" and "Victoria", adding that the Iraqi army is taking on the task of confronting these threats, and did not allow others to deploy in the vicinity of the base.

The attacks were accompanied by mounting pressure on the Al-Kazemi government to resolve the file of the American presence in Iraq

Commenting on the attacks, the expert in Iraqi security and political affairs, Ahmed Al-Nuaimi, pointed out that the number of attacks that targeted bases and facilities that include US or coalition forces since mid-January has reached 19, three of which were by drones and the other by missiles. Katyusha and Grad, targeted "Harir" bases in Erbil and "Victoria" west of Baghdad, "Balad" air base in Salah al-Din, and "Ain al-Assad" base in Anbar, in addition to 28 attacks by improvised explosive devices targeting convoys working for the international coalition carrying equipment Not warlike. The expert added that these attacks in total resulted in the killing of 10 people, including 8 Iraqis and two contractors of two foreign nationalities, in addition to wounding at least 30 others, including policemen.

And Al-Nuaimi considered, in an interview with Al-Araby Al-Jadeed, that “the attacks may be directly related to Qaani’s visit to Iraq and his meeting with a number of armed faction leaders in addition to Al-Kazemi, as leaks from several sources confirm that Qaani escalated pressure with the file of the withdrawal of American forces from Iraq.” Iraq , as Tehran considers Al-Kazemi’s government’s insistence on differentiating between combat forces and training forces as a kind of deception and deception, and that what is required is the exit of the last American military from the country.

In conjunction with the security escalation, the Iraqi political arena witnessed a similar political escalation with regard to the US military presence in Iraq, and intensified calls for the government to resolve the file of the withdrawal of US forces from the country. In this context, Jaber Al-Fatlawi, a representative of the "Sadiquon" bloc in Parliament, described the US presence in Iraq as "illegitimate", stressing that "talking about foreign forces remaining is unacceptable, and we will not allow it." Al-Fatlawi added, in press statements, that "the need for the presence of American or non-American forces on Iraqi soil has been completely eliminated."

Concurrently, Representative Muhammad al-Sihoud, a leader in the "State of Law" coalition led by former Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, considered the American presence in Iraq a "source of concern for Iraqis," speaking of "the existence of an American scheme that threatens unity and social fabric with the approach of early legislative elections." in Iraq, scheduled for October 10. In turn, the representative of the "Al-Fateh" coalition, Uday Al-Shaalan, issued a statement, calling on Al-Kazemi's government to work to expel the American forces from Iraq, considering that "the presence of the American forces for a longer period constitutes a danger to the Iraqi people, as they interfere in every small and large, which requires The government should put an end to it."

On this, a member of the civil movement, Ahmed Haqqi, also linked the security and political escalation to Qaani's visit. Haqqi added, in an interview with Al-Araby Al-Jadeed, that the two attacks coincided with the political escalation against the government regarding the American presence and Qaani’s visit, which came to strengthen pressure on the government regarding the foreign military file in the country, especially with the information of Al-Kazemi’s visit to Washington next July. To discuss the future of the security relationship between the two countries and the role of the "international coalition" as a whole. Haqi believed that "the armed factions are moving with clear Iranian recommendations in this context, and the same is true of the political forces allied to them in Parliament," considering that the continuation of escalation may actually threaten the holding of elections, especially if Washington decides to respond to the attacks.

  • (Baghdad - Al-Bayan - Agencies)
Date:
Renewed attempts by gunmen to launch Katyusha rockets against Balad air base, after two days of escalation, as the Iraqi forces announced yesterday that intelligence managed, after accurate information, to seize 4 Katyusha rockets with 4 platforms hidden in one of the orchards.

In the Zanbour area in Diyala governorate, adjacent to Salah al-Din governorate, it was prepared to target Balad Air Base.

A statement by the Security Media Cell stated, "According to accurate intelligence information, the Federal Intelligence and Investigation Agency's detachments in the Ministry of Interior were able to seize four Katyusha rockets with four platforms hidden in one of the orchards in the Zanbour area in Diyala Governorate, adjacent to Salah al-Din Governorate."

The statement added that "the missiles were prepared to target the Balad air base," stressing that "they were handled by anti-explosives experts."
The base located in Salah al-Din province, which includes American contractors, was targeted in the evening (Wednesday) with 3 Katyusha rockets, without causing any casualties. At the same time, it targeted the Victoria Military Base at Baghdad Airport with 3 drones.

After the escalation of attacks in Iraq

The US Department of Defense unveils a new weapon to counter drones (video)

The US Department of Defense unveils a new weapon to counter drones (video)

people - Baghdad

The Pentagon has developed an interceptor missile that fires "strong barbed launchers" at hostile drones, causing them to fall to the ground while limiting collateral damage.

These Silly String-like filaments get tangled up in enemy drones' propellers, causing them to lose thrust and cause them to drop.

As drones become a larger part of modern warfare, combat forces are coming up with more innovative ways to bring them down or disable them.

The intensity of drone attacks in Iraq has escalated over the past few weeks.

According to the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), the goal is to devise anti-drone technology that does not cause as much collateral damage as explosives.

They will be used in populated areas, are low-cost, reusable, and can be launched en masse to deal with multiple threats.

The agency began developing the interceptor, known as the Counter-Unmanned Aircraft System (C-UAS), four years ago as a way to stop small, self-guided drones, without the kind of significant collateral damage caused by gunfire or explosives.

In a video released this week, the agency demonstrated a C-UAS drone at Eglin Air Force Base outside Valparaiso, Florida.

2021-06-Defense-Department-demonstrates-interceptor-that-uses-Silly-String-to-take

Launched from a stationary vehicle, the interceptor targeted a drone flying over a field, using a newly developed "X band" radar that automatically senses and identifies threats to the unmanned air system.

The interceptor then fired what the agency calls "strong barbed launchers" at the hostile drone's propellers, causing them to lose thrust.

The technology was developed by Dynetics, a military contractor that recently unveiled Enduring Shield, a mobile land-based weapon system designed to defeat "unmanned aircraft systems, cruise missiles, rockets, artillery and mortars."

The agency has also developed other non-explosive, anti-drone and other small aircraft-like interceptor weapons that are safer than explosive countermeasures, but has not released a video revealing them.

“Iranian factions” bombard “Ain al-Assad” in western Iraq

I welcomed a major election... and signs of a new escalation against America

"Ain al-Assad" base, which was targeted again yesterday (AFP)

Amid signs of a new escalation, and less than two weeks after a series of missiles fell on the Victory base near Baghdad International Airport and Balad Air Base north of Baghdad, a Katyusha rocket landed yesterday on the "Ain al-Assad" base in Anbar Governorate, western Iraq, which includes American soldiers.

What is striking about the new targeting of "Ain al-Assad" is that it came the day after the hard-line candidate Ibrahim Raisi's victory in the Iranian presidential elections. Factions close to Iran accused of attacks on the Americans and the international coalition convoys welcomed a major victory, and Abu Ala Al-Wali, a leader in the Popular Mobilization, described the victory as "a failure of the path of America's pawns," according to the French press agency.

According to the Security Media Cell, the missile that targeted "Ain al-Assad" yesterday "did not explode," indicating that "the security forces are conducting an investigation into the incident." The cell stated that "the missile was launched towards the base from the al-Baghdadi area, but no losses were recorded."

In total, 43 attacks have targeted US interests in Iraq since the beginning of the year, especially the US embassy in Baghdad and Iraqi military bases that include Americans, and the Baghdad and Erbil airports, as well as coalition logistic convoys.

Western military officials and diplomats in Iraq believe that these attacks not only pose a threat to many of them, but also threaten their ability to combat ISIS, which still maintains sleeper cells in the desert and mountainous regions of the country.

A missile hits "Ain al-Assad" the day after a major election

"Ain al-Assad" base, which was targeted again yesterday (AFP)

Less than two weeks after a series of missiles fell on the Victory base near Baghdad International Airport and Balad Air Base north of Baghdad, yesterday a Katyusha missile landed on the "Ain al-Assad" base in Anbar province, western Iraq, which includes American soldiers.
While the targeting of the “Victory” base was the most dangerous of its kind, as it was targeted on the tenth of June by three drones, one of which was shot down, the targeting of “Ain al-Assad” carried important implications, especially since it came after the victory of the hard-line candidate Ibrahim Raisi in the elections. Iranian presidential.
According to the Security Media Cell, the missile that targeted Ain al-Assad "did not explode," indicating that "the security forces are conducting an investigation into the incident." The cell stated that "the missile was launched towards the base from the al-Baghdadi area, but no losses were recorded."

While the Iraqi official agencies classify the launchers of missiles and drones as outlaw groups, the finger of accusation is directed at some factions close to Iran, although many observers believe that some of these factions no longer abide by the Iranian instructions regarding the truce with the United States of America at a time when it is taking place Tehran indirect negotiations with Washington in Vienna on the Iranian nuclear file.
While the missiles and drones fell early this month prior to a visit by the Iranian Quds Force commander Ismail Qaani, yesterday's missile fell on "Ain al-Assad", one day after Raisi's victory, which Iraqi leaders rushed to congratulate, looking forward to strong relations with Iran, while Raisi invited the President Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi to visit Iran, with which he enjoys good relations, in contrast to his ambiguous relations with the factions close to it in Iraq.
Those factions welcomed a major victory, and Abu Ala’ al-Wala’i, a leader in the Popular Mobilization, described Raisi’s victory as “a failure of the pawns of America,” according to the French press agency.
In total, 43 attacks have targeted US interests in Iraq since the beginning of the year, especially the US embassy in Baghdad and Iraqi military bases that include Americans, and the Baghdad and Erbil airports, as well as coalition logistic convoys, in attacks often attributed to pro-Iranian factions. The attacks raise the concern of military officials in the international coalition to combat ISIS, led by the United States. The United States deploys 2,500 soldiers in Iraq out of 3,500 members of the coalition forces in Iraq. Western military officials and diplomats in Iraq believe that these attacks not only pose a threat to many of them, but also threaten their ability to combat ISIS, which still maintains sleeper cells in the desert and mountainous regions of the country.
The Iraqi authorities have been trying for years to deter the perpetrators of these attacks, while some of these factions have become affiliated with the official Iraqi forces, or have relations and contacts with them.
Attacks since the beginning of the year have killed foreign contractors, nine Iraqi contractors, and eight civilians, while reaching a new level in mid-April, when Iraqi pro-Iranian factions for the first time carried out an attack with a booby-trapped drone on a military base hosting Americans at Erbil Airport in the north of the country.

Hours after it was subjected to a new missile attack on Sunday, Al-Arabiya / Al-Hadath sources reported on Sunday evening, the arrest of 4 of the perpetrators of the missile attacks on Ain Al-Assad base in western Iraq.

An Iraqi security source revealed the arrest of four of the perpetrators, explaining that the Iraqi intelligence launched a security operation in Anbar province after targeting the Ain al-Assad base on Sunday afternoon with a Katyusha missile, and was able to arrest four of its launchers.

He also added that the arrest process took place under orders and follow-up from senior security leaders in the country.

Missile attack
Sources had reported earlier today that the Ain al-Assad base in Anbar Governorate, west of the country, had been subjected to a missile attack. She explained that a missile landed in the vicinity of the air base, which houses American soldiers.

She also indicated that the security forces closed the al-Baghdadi area in Anbar completely in search of the missile launchers, after they found the launch pad.

Later, the security forces stated in a statement that they had opened an investigation into the fall of an unexploded Katyusha rocket, fired from the direction of the al-Baghdadi area towards Ain al-Assad, without recording any significant losses.

Repeated attacks It
is noteworthy that on the fifth of this month (June 2021), the Iraqi army also announced that the “air defense system at Ain Al-Asad Air Base ” confronted two drones and managed to shoot them down.

In early March, the military base witnessed the fall of approximately 10 Katyusha rockets. US Defense Department officials, who requested anonymity, at the time, according to what was reported by Politico, accused the Iran-backed Hezbollah Brigades or a group affiliated with it of carrying out the attack.

The fingers of such attacks are often pointed at armed groups loyal to Iran.

While the Iraqi authorities have been trying for years to deter the perpetrators of these attacks, to no avail.
