Independent /…. The US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, condemned the missile attack launched by outlaw groups on the Green Zone in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, yesterday, Sunday, and caused injuries to a number of Iraqi civilians.

"The Iranian-backed militias blatantly and recklessly again attacked Baghdad, wounding Iraqi civilians," Pompeo said.

Pompeo added, "The Iraqi people deserve that the attackers be prosecuted, and the criminals and corrupt people should stop their destabilizing actions."

The Iraqi Security Media Cell announced the launch of eight "Katyusha" rockets in the Green Zone in which the US embassy is located, on the night of Sunday, Monday, and the embassy intercepted the missiles, announcing that there had been "light damage" to the building and it suggested that civilians were injured.

The embassy condemned the attack, demanding accountability from those responsible, while the Iraqi authorities pledged to protect diplomatic facilities and described the attack as "criminal acts." (End)

The Presidency of the Republic condemns the terrorist act that targeted the Green Zone

Baghdad - conscious

Today, Sunday, the Presidency of the Republic condemned the missile strikes that targeted the Green Zone in central Baghdad.

The presidency stated, in a statement received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), that it "condemns the terrorist act that targeted the Green Zone this evening, Sunday 20 December 2020," indicating that "the continuation of these criminal acts leads first to endangering the security and lives of innocent citizens and their property to danger. It also represents a targeting of the country's sovereignty and national efforts to preserve the prestige of the state, and it undermines Iraq's international reputation and its foreign relations, by targeting diplomatic missions whose security and safety of their facilities and personnel are on the Iraqi side within its applicable international obligations.

She added, "We urge the security forces to pursue criminal gangs outside the law, bring them to justice, and not allow these incidents to recur in order to protect the supreme interest of the country and ensure the security and stability of citizens."

It is noteworthy that the Security Media Cell announced earlier today, Sunday, that the Green Zone in central Baghdad had been targeted by 8 Katyusha rockets.
