The Economy News - Baghdad

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo confirmed that Washington would give Iraq a 120-day exception to continue importing electricity from Iran to help the new government.

"In support of the new government, the United States will press ahead with granting a 120-day exception to importing electricity as an expression of our desire to help create the conditions for success," the State Department said in a statement, followed by "Economy News", after a call to Pompeo and new Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kazemi. .

Washington has repeatedly extended the waiver that allows Baghdad to use the necessary Iranian energy supplies for its electricity grid for 90 or 120 days. But it extended the waiver last month for only 30 days while Baghdad was having trouble forming a new government.

The American exemption allowed Iraq to continue importing about 1,400 megawatts of electricity and 28 million cubic meters (988 million cubic feet) of Iranian gas.

Al-Abadi added that the government is going to establish a network of electrical connection lines with the Kingdom of Jordan and Turkey, pointing out that Iraq needs a period ranging from 3 to 4 years in order to achieve self-sufficiency in electrical energy.
