SOFIA — An Islamic State (IS) militant with US background, who has been involved in the running of an online media campaign disseminating jihadist materials to sympathizers of the self-proclaimed "caliphate" around the world, was killed in Syria, the extremist group said on Thursday. 

The IS- propagandist known as Ahmad Abousamra was killed in early January when a missile struck a house where he was staying north of the city of Tabqa in Syria, Islamic State publications reported, including their English language online magazine Rumiyah which Abousamra helped set up. 

The man who is believed to have been 35 years-old at the time of his death, was born in Paris but brought up in Boston, Massachusetts, where he studied computer science, Reuters reported. 

Abousamra travelled to Yemen, Pakistan and Iraq, while planning an armed attack in the US, however his plans were uncovered, which led to his disappearance. Back in 2011, at the beginning of the Syrian conflict, Abousamra travelled to Aleppo in northern Syria, where he joined the Al Qaeda-affiliated al-Nusra Front, and after that the so-called Islamic State. 

After joining the IS extremist group, he helped set up publications, including the IS online magazine Dabiq named after a village in Syria where an Islamic prophecy says a battle will be fought between Muslims and infidels, heralding doomsday, however the IS militants were driven from the village six months ago.

Before the news of his death, the FBI offered $50,000 for information leading to Abousamra after he was charged with conspiracy to provide material support to terrorists and kill in a foreign country.
