Raising Iraq-Kuwait Border Issues “Unjustified”: Abadi

LEEDSThe Prime Minister of Iraq, Haider Al-Abadi, said on Tuesday that the raising issues regarding Khour Abdullah and the border demarcation with the State of Kuwait is rather "unjustified" considering the border with the neighboring country has already been demarcated in accordance with the United Nations resolution.

"The aim of raising these issues at this time is to deviate attention from victory achieved in the city of Mosul," Abadi said during a press conference, according to Kuwait News Agency.

He further added that there is an unjustified media frenzy created over Khour Abdullah and explained that the Iraqi government has discussed the mapping of maritime boundaries between the two countries. He said MP Hanan al-Fatlawi, member of the parliamentary committee for foreign affairs, has raised the issue, asking the Iraqi PM about the claims that Iraq has relinquished rights in Khour Abdullah.

Kuwait News Agency further reported that a statement was made by the Deputy Foreign Minister of Kuwait, Khaled Al-Jarallah, regarding the issues, saying that a new map is needed in accordance with the UN resolution 833. According to the UN Security Council resolution 833 demarcation can be made over land borders and part of maritime boundaries up until border sign 162.

Jarallah has continued his statement by saying that the Khour Abdullah is a waterway between Iraq and Kuwait and the two countries have now agreed to start drawing the new border maps with sharing the costs for the process.

Protesters in Basra outraged by Khor Abdallah waterway agreement

Massive protests have swept Basra governorate on Tuesday in protest against the Iraqi government decision to regulate and coordinate the navigation with Kuwait via Khor Abdallah waterway.

A well-informed source said hundreds of Basra residents gathered near the statue of Poet Badr Shaker at the Kornish Street to express their anger over the ratification of the agreement signed with Kuwait to regulate navigation at the waterway. They raised the Iraqi flags and carried banners denouncing any infringement to Iraq's sovereignty.

Protesters asserted that the agreement on regulation of navigation at Khor Abdallah was not binding by the UN, accusing the Iraqi officials of treason by approving such agreement.

The source said protesters are willing to exercise pressure on the Iraqi government and parliament to regain the lands that have been squandered by the Iraqi politicians at cheap prices.

Control of the Khor Abdullah waterway is one of several outstanding issues between Iraq and Kuwait remaining from now-executed Iraqi president Saddam Hussein’s August 1990 invasion of Kuwait.

The Khor Abdullah waterway serves as Iraq’s entrance to the Gulf, through which the vast majority of its oil exports flow.

Lawmaker calls for repealing Khor Abdallah agreement

February 09 2017 07:40 PM
Al-Sahiud
Al-Sahiud

The Reform Front lawmaker Mohammed Al-Sahiud on Thursday called on parliament to nullify Khor Abdallah agreement signed with Kuwait.

He tried to discharge the former Prime Minister Nuri Al-Maleki from the responsibility for penning the agreement, saying the former regime is the one to balme for this.

"What is being rumored by some media platforms and figures that Khor Abdallah waterway had been handed over to Kuwait under the former prime minister are plain lies aimed at political defaming," the lawmaker said in a press conference on Thursday.

Al-Maleki government refused to hand this waterway to Kuwait despite pressures exerted by the US and UK on Iraq, he added.

Al-Sahiud demanded taking the due measures by the government of Abadi to preserve the national sovereignty, and not yielding to any pressures from regional or intrnational parties regarding this issue.
