SHANGAL—Kurdish Peshmerga forces have entered Shangal, said military officials, and they have cornered militants of the Islamic State in parts of the town.

Rudaw reporter in the area said that units from the 10,000-strong Peshmarga force who had encircled the town earlier in the day are now in the town center and try to rout the Islamic militants.

The Peshmerga were able to enter Shangal following a heavy bombardment of the Rahman and Nasir sectors where the militants had taken position.

Meanwhile, a large Peshmerga forces have made their way to the Shangal mountainside where thousands of Yezidi families have taken shelter.

Rudaw reporter says that the Peshmerga have made progress in their counteroffensive near Zumar where they intend to cut off the IS militants from retreating into Syria.

The IS are said to have demolished the Zumar bridge in anticipation of the Peshmerga advance.

The Kurdish forces went on the offensive on Sunday after Islamic militants captured Shangal 200 kilometers west of Erbil.

“We decided to go on the offensive and fight the terrorists to the last breath,” said Kurdistan Region President Massoud Barzani Monday afternoon. “We have ordered the Peshmerga to attack the terrorists and enemies of Kurdistan with all their power.”

Barzani said that the Kurdish forces “will not relinquish an inch of Kurdistan and we will defend our dear Yezidi brothers and sisters.”

Earlier in the day, Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki ordered the Iraqi air force to assist the Peshmerga in their fight against the IS militants.

According to Rudaw reporter in the region, Iraqi jets bombed militant positions in Shangal and Zumar today.

Unofficial sources told Rudaw that members of the Peoples Protection Units (YPG) have joined the Peshmerga fight against the Islamic militants. Ten Kurdish volunteer fighters were also reported to have reached Shangal from Turkey.

The official source who didn’t want to be named said that the US would also provide the Kurdish Peshmerga with arms and military expertise.

The American offer is said to include humanitarian aid to be transported by air to the people of Shangal and Zumar who have been displaced as a result of fighting in their areas.

This newspaper has also learned that a number of European countries have contacted the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) with offers of military support.

The Kurdish forces went on the offensive against militants of the Islamic State (IS) for the first time on Sunday.

Peshmerga-YPG in Joint Attack on Militants By RUDAW 4 hours ago

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Peshmerga officials reported Tuesday that their forces had retaken the village of Mahmoudia near the Rabia border crossing on the Syrian border.

A Rudaw reporter in the area said that the Peshmerga and the Peoples Protection Units (YPG) are coordinating the attacks against the Islamic State (IS/ISIS).

Earlier in the day fighter jets bombed the center of Rabia, with a Peshmerga official saying he believed it was carried out by American jets.

A high-level US official told Rudaw this week that the United States has offered the Kurds air support and military expertise in their fight against IS.

Mahmoudia fell to the Islamic militants on Monday evening after the Peshmerga said they had made “a tactical withdrawal.”

Heval Xurshid, a YPG officer who attended a meeting with the Peshmerga told Rudaw: “We have agreed with the Peshmerga not to stop until we have reached the center of Rabia.”

The YPG are Kurdish fighters from Rojava (Syrian Kurdistan), which shares borders with the Kurdistan Region, and have been fighting IS for the past two years.

IS, previously known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, has declared an Islamic Caliphate over captured territories in both countries, with the Syrian city of Raqqah as the capital.

Rabia is one of Iraq’s most important border crossings, connecting Iraq and Syria. The border fell to the IS in June after the withdrawal of Iraqi troops.

The Peshmerga forces have already taken six villages from IS militants.

The joint Kurdish forces are now concentrated at Qahira village, 10 kilometers from the heart of Rabia.

Peshmerga officials said that Mahmoudia and Chilbarat are the only two villages left under IS control.

Peshmerga Push Deeper into Shingal in Intense FightingBy RUDAW 5 hours ago

A Peshmerga officer speaks to Rudaw near Shangal.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Kurdish forces pushed deeper into Shingal to liberate the town from Islamic militants in intense fighting Tuesday, Peshmerga officials said.

A Peshmerga officer at the frontline told Rudaw that the town was still not completely under Kurdish control.

He said his forces were facing a new challenge, as militants of the Islamic State (IS/ISIS) were seen wearing Kurdish clothes and flying the Kurdistan flag on vehicles in order to avoid detection.

“They have put on Kurdish clothes, shaved their beards and fly the Kurdish flag, appearing to be Peshmerga,” he said. “This helps them not be distinguished by people or the Peshmerga and they can use the trick to escape,” he added.

Shingal, a majority Yezidi town 210 kilometers west of Erbil, fell to Islamic militants on Saturday.

Officials said that 10,000 Peshmerga are now involved in a three-pronged offensive against the Islamic group.

As a result of the IS takeover of Shingal thousands of Yezidi families have fled the area, most for the Kurdistan Region, while 50,000 civilians remain stuck on the nearby Shangal mountain.

A Rudaw correspondent on the mountain said that the condition of the fleeing civilians was grave, and that “many of them are close to death from starvation.”

The reporter said that on Monday limited quantities of food and water were delivered to those families, and that a group of Peshmerga fighters managed to reach the mountain on Monday.

Yezidi civilians have reportedly taken up arms and formed a defensive unit to prevent the militants from reaching the stranded people.

Iraqi Kurds have taken over two oil fields, Iraq's oil ministry says, amid a growing dispute with the government in Baghdad.

Kurdish peshmerga forces seized control of production facilities at Bai Hassan and the Kirkuk oil fields, in the north of Iraq, on Friday, the ministry adds.

Kurdish MPs have also withdrawn from Iraq's central government.

They did so after Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki accused the Kurds of harbouring extremists.

Kurdish forces have moved into areas of north-western Iraq abandoned by the Iraqi army during the advance of Islamist insurgents led by the Isis (Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant) group over the past month.

The Kurds have since declared plans to hold a referendum on independence in the areas seized, escalating tensions with Iraq's central authorities.
