Problem is, corruption is so endemic to Arabic culture (despite Islam - which may not have a position on this - I have no idea) that new leaders will only mean a change in the players, not an end to the problem.

Also, this article could be crap, since the Iraqi Press will print any interesting rumor as fact, as evidenced by the rampant allegations we see that would never appear in print here.

I am sure we are all anxious to see how the GOI changes.  For one thing, if Maliki goes, so will Turki no doubt.  However, I don't know if that will aid our "cause" or not.

Just did a quick search, and the Qur'an does take a position on corruption, but not a very strong one in my opinion.  There is one verse that specifically mentions bribery, but mostly in regards to the justice system (as in bribing judges and police).  Other than that, it is implied that corruption is bad because it do creates injustice (read unfairness), but it is not really spelled out.  Corruption is NOT spelled out as a major "sin", in other words.

Cronyism is rampant - whoever is in charge is expected to place their relatives and friends into positions of power.  To change this, many more positions need to be filled via separate elections rather than by appointment.  An evolution in Iraq's democracy that will doubtless take a while to happen - and as we know will not necessarily end the problem, but at least the notorious and openly corrupt will NOT get re-elected (one hopes).

Perfect government is worth continually striving for, but is doubtless unobtainable.
