Bumper64
Today we highlight three veterans. We honor John Maslak of Kansas City, Kansas, who fell in 1969. Today would have been his birthday. We also honor Marvin White, who fell on this day in 1967, and James Utter who fell earlier this month in the same year. They were from Rochester, Indiana. John is remembered by his daughter, whom he never got to meet: "I was only 3.5 months old when my dad was killed. I have read letters to my mom, and he loved her and me both so much. I think of him all the time and want him to know I love him."Marvin and James are remembered by their neighbor, Diana: "I have never forgotten Jim Utter and Marvin White. One lived across the road from me and the other about one quarter mile down the road. To each other they were friends, neighbors and classmates, and they were killed in Vietnam exactly two weeks apart. To an impressionable 14-year-old girl they were the boys of summer like "Jan and Dean". They are now forever young. I am grateful for their service and their sacrifice. I will never forget them."Help keep the memory of our veterans alive for generations to come: http://bit.ly/1aj85Yt

He is remembered here by his niece, Gretchan: "My uncle Robert passed away at the age of nineteen while serving in Vietnam. Unfortunately, because of this, I was never given the chance to meet him. My mom has told me numerous stories about what a great brother and great person he was. Since I have moved back to Heber Springs, I have met people who grew up here that still remember my uncle Robert to this day. I'm sad that I never got to meet him. I feel like I know him through the stories that have been shared. In just nineteen short years my uncle Robert left a legacy in this town that continues to live on. He was a great man and a great Marine. I can't wait until the day I get to see his handsome face in person. Thanks to my uncle Robert and others who have laid their lives down for all of us. vietnam1969
I think this is the second time I have found two soldiers receiving the Medal of Honor while fighting side by side during one mission in modern times. The only other instance occurred in Mogadishu, Somalia in October of 1993 that I know of so far. There was another battle in the 1800's where about 40-45 soldiers/sailors were awarded the Medal of Honor for the same day of fighting.
